Its on the ballot.  You will be able to own up to an ounce if you are 21.  You will not be able to smoke in public.  It will be taxed.  That's all I know.  What do you know?  What do you think?  I think I want to move to CA!!

There's rather more to it. The law will allow people twenty-one and older "to possess, cultivate, or transport marijuana for personal use." It would also allow  "local governments to regulate and tax commercial production and sale of marijuana to people 21 years old or older."

Further, under the prop's text, it would also be "prohibited to possess marijuana on school grounds, use it in public, smoke it in the presence of minors and provide it to anyone under 21 years old."

California's Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance estimated that California would save up to "several tens of millions of dollars annually to state and local governments on the costs of incarcerating and supervising certain marijuana offenders."

Projections are that if the proposition passes it will bring up to 1.4 billion (with a B) dollars in additional revenue to the state every year.

For anyone interested the state bill is AB 2254.

Not only will they raise tax revenue but at the same time police and court costs should drop by not prosecuting people for possession.

The prison system?  Do people go to jail for small amount possession?

When I lived in Mississippi you were only written a ticket for anything less than an ounce.

That is what is done in my state.  A $100.00 fine for possession under an ounce.  I think Ma will legalize soon.

Yup, what I'd like to know is if the penalties for possession will retroactively be dropped.

Tobacco, Alcohol, Pharmaceutical, Paper and Oil lobbies will fight it.

Just remember, the FBI and DEA get involved when drugs are transported across State lines? So, if a State did legalize it, when a person leaves the State, and it's not legal somewhere else or the law isn't the same, then those two agencies are going to get involved.

Especially, it will draw more attention from the FBI and DEA, if states legalize it.

So few people are even aware how much of a positive impact the growing of hemp could possibly have for the world.

So few understand that it's not the MJ that's illegal because it's a drug...it's the hemp that would destroy so many of the big corporations.

Did you know that Henry Ford intended his cars to run on fuel made  out of hemp?

Big Oil and the paper companies can't have that kind of sh** happening.

            Stupid crap.

No idea whether they will, but they definitely should. I spent a few months living in Holland once and I think it works really well there. I know a lot of young people in Britain that really identify with being a pot smoker and end up smoking it 24/7 and it does have a negative impact on them, but in Holland where it is more normalized and socialized I met very few dutch people who go crazy with it, because it's not such a big deal, so if you are a total pot head that smokes all the time its seen as just being a bit sad, rather than rebellious and glamorous.

I think they'll pas it. Certainly they have a better chance of doing that than fixing their debt problems! I don't know how it will work, but if it's legal everyone will be growing it in their homes so I can't see them getting a big windfall in tax revenues from it. Maybe the legislature want to make it legal so they can get stoned and forget about their problems!

I tell you, considering the total gridlock (semi-permanent at that) of the state legislature I certainly hope so.

I'm in my late fifties now, I gave it up in my twenties and haven't looked back. If the arthritic pain I have in various joints gets much worse I might look into a prescription for it. Marijuana really is an excellent pain reliever.

But so far aspirin works just fine.

Maybe they'll legalize it nationally so they can put it on the list of things they use to justify charging you higher premiums for the health care that you are going to be forced to buy like booze, fastfood, sodas and cigarettes are going to be (and maybe riding motor cycles and owning guns etc., but that will come later).

    big_smile

I hope they do legalize it tho. It's one less battle in the "war on drugs" that we can stop losing every year and looking stupid and wasting money.

Prohibition of Alcohol didn't work.  It's huge money maker for States.  And yes a lot of people get hurt by it.  But it's cheaper than putting everyone in jail.

I see the same logic being applied here.

It's a plant, it grows, people are using it all the time.

You can't legislate beliefs or morality.

Whether you are for or against it... the cost of legalizing it is lower than the cost of prohibiting it.

Seeing as how we all got differing opinions on politics and religion that often gets flame wars going and how this topic has been a unifying force, perhaps we should get all the world politicians and religious leaders together for a lock in with a big ol bag o weed and tell em they aint allowed out until its all smoked up! Wonder what kind of unity that might bring?

Butter seems to have some sort of trait that extracts THC from pot. I think the method is to wrap the pot tightly in cheese cloth and then cook it in butter for a few hours. Works great!  smile

works great, but the only example of od ing on pot that I've ever heard of occurred when someone ingested to many cookies made with thc butter!  they were hallucinating and had to go to er for downers! and they say it is hard to know exactly how much you are getting when you ingest it, but it is def worth the risk because there's no coughing and it is very mellow, soft kind of feeling.   not that I would know !  lol

I think it should have been legalized long ago.  Why?  Taxes.  The taxes alone would pay for all the government benefits programs, and then some.  It is the truest and most economical way to bring CA out of this horrible mess they are in.  As I stated in another post, CA small business taxes have all but bankrupted their state of any good income.  Without small businesses, CA will not survive.  Case in point, are they surviving now?  No- not at all.  Legalize pot, fill the coffers.  Simply put.  This should also keep Arnie from stealing from the poor, to pay for the rich.

  46. RKHenry profile image66
    RKHenryposted 14 years ago

It is my understanding that it is more harmful than cigs on the lungs.  But I don't know.  I don't really care, all I know is that Arnie needs to leave the poor people alone in CA, and find a new group of people to plunder wealth from.  CA has already driven out the small and medium business owner by taxing them to death, and now he wants to steal from the poor to pay for his governmental travel expenses?  I don't think so.
