Not too successfully in my case.
I guess to just keep contact as regular as possible, by phone, e-mail and best of all by webcam, and to know exactly what the other person in the relationship really wants out of it - it's not always easy to be sure of what the other person wants, or what sort of timescale or ideas they have for moving the relationship forward, but it's important to know so the relationship doesn't just drag on forever.
And of course understanding and trust are also necessary ingredients.

That is true! Trust, understanding..and I have my 3Cs..communication, compromise and committment. I hope that my relationship would last a lifetime. We are on our fourth month.

I was in a LDR for 2 and a half years until she started messing around. We used to talk over the internet pretty much everyday for hours, webcam, phone calls (skype) and we saw each other a few times a year in person. It is one of the hardest things I have done, but if you love the person it is worth it.

Trust is what will make or break that kind of relationship.
