Some helpful activities are pursuing our interests/hobbies and giving (which includes our time, aid, love, even listening ear) to others in need. There are many lonely individuals around and reaching out to them may also eliminate one's own feelings of loneliness.

It is in giving—not in seeking gifts,
We find out quest."
Putting yourself out there into the community through voluteerism is an excellent way of breaking down those walls of seclusion. There are so many community projects out there to jump in and use to chase those kind of blues away. Staying active in your area will generate new friends as well and opportunities you would not have otherwise. Open yourself up and be receiving of attention!
First of all it is important to love yourself enough to be fine with being alone. The next thing is to keep in mind that the mental state of loneliness has nothing to do with being physcially alone. There are many married people who "feel alone".
The feeling of loneliness comes from sensing you don't have a (connection) with anyone. Naturally there are things one can do to take charge of their life and be proactive when it comes to meeting people. However the first step is building one's self-esteem and confidence. There are many ways, you could try accepting yourself and registering on Online dating websites, surfing craigslist or even visiting clubs.
