   Loyalty is definitely a part of it but it also involves more than that. Both of you should love one another unconditionally (i stress the word "unconditional"), have genuine respect for one another,  be open & honest about what's in your hearts & on your minds and actually listen, communicate well, motivate each other, etc. - with these things, the best actions & choices will follow. You really can't have one without the other so in true love, all those things will come naturally. God bless you.

   It's part of it but not necessarily the "essence" of marriage.
   One could have a verbally and physically abusive spouse but he/she never cheats.
   Most people want honesty, trust, loyalty, love & devotion, intimacy, and emotional security in their marriage.
   Remove any one of the above and it's difficult to sustain a happy and fulfilling marriage. Simply "staying together" is not a recipe for happiness. There are lots of "roommates" with the same last name.

   Absolutely. Without loyalty no  marriages can survive. When you love your spouse intensely, loyalty automatically enters into your relationship. Loyalty brings in a sense of belonging in your relationship which is yet another essential ingredient for the emotional security of your marriage.
