It seems to be fairly common for one who believes in the existence of a supernatural deity to verbally attack, threaten with damnation and even demean anyone who does not subscribe to such a belief. Are such beliefs built on such intimidation and is this its true foundation?

Asa--Hahert and Jiletee are just too rude to be Atheists.
cjhunsinger, are you denying there ability to claim Atheism because they are too rude? Do you actually get a say in the matter? Is there some code of honor that an Atheist must go through to be Atheist? I am not one, so I don't know.
Laura--Maher & Jillette--they can claim anything they want and for me they are more representative of a political, Muslim o Christian zealot. It proves that no philosophy is free of such people.
That is a whole different ballgame. Now we are talking about extremists.
exactly, I was highlighting extremism to point out the majority are not that way.
ChristinS--Enjoyed your response---evil is not evil, wrong is not wrong, brutality and savagery are not so, when in the service of a god.
cj... that comment is ridiculous and you know this!
CJ, has a legitimate point there. Many despicable things done in history have been done in the name of a god. Many of these acts were following the principle, "The end justifies the means."
Yes there has been many atrocities committed in the name of religion for thousands of years and by many religions. Thank God Christianity is not involved in such acts anymore. Dark ages. I just wish that the extremists would come out of the dark ages
Whether those things happened in the "dark ages" or present day, if most of the teachings are still the same, then technically it's possible for it to happen again...but maybe on a lesser scale.
Laura--My question was a question and not a statement of truth. As to your asserted innuendo that the police officer was racist--I know who have evidence to back that up--right?
For over 1000+ yrs Christianity was very savage.
I was merely trying to state that people tend to lump everyone together in a situation that is not entirely accurate on the whole of the discussion. Not everyone is a racist, even though racial tensions are high right now.
Laura : while you stated that people tend to lump up everyone together; i totally agree. but then you lumped up all the muslims into the "kill non-muslim" category? I would encourage you to read more, as this information is inaccurate.
Arksys, I actually tried to differentiate between them, but am limited by this thing called space. Why in the world does this thing limit characters?
Limited because if you want to write more then you can make a hub about it. So I'm guessing you know that the majority do not kill and it is unlawful in Islam.
Lump everything together, as you did?
you are right... i should have added "on hubpages"... I know all atheists are not aggressive... but on this site they seem to be.
Arksys--When a belief is heralded as a truth every reasoned being is obligated to respond. The overriding element here is that if a lie is big enough and told often enough, it becomes a truth. And that is a damning thing for society.
i agree ...
Who exactly are you calling an atheist? The question certainly did not speak of Christianity but religions in general. I spoke of Christianity, but also of Muslims. I also spoke of our First Amendment rights.
If you do not believe in God.... then YOU!
I never said one way or another what my beliefs are other than " I care not what your religion states, as long as it does not interfere with mine. But when you start claiming that your beliefs are superior to mine, there will be issues."
If you do not believe in God. Then you already have issues greater than my comment!
Perhaps you need to read the comment I originally stated before passing judgement on me. All you are doing here is making the OP's point that you are overly aggressive. At no time were we being abusive to your feelings or your God. Chill.
Sorry Laura...... The OP and I have had these discussions before. Sorry again!
JT--Your response speaks well to my question.
CJ...... Glad to be of service. But, just like if I ask questions about atheists I must be ready for their responses. And believe me.. you people swarm like hornets!
JT--Again your response goes to aggression. Perhaps, it is just you and a sense of insecurity with reference to the deity that you profess, as others do not have that vehemence.
CJ... That is just laughable to label myself this way because I WILL stand up for my God. I am doing nothing that you, yourself do everyday. Stand up for what we believe! And by the way, every word I said was the truth!
