Why is sexual orientation such a big deal?

I don't understand why sexual orientation is such a big deal. In the book of Leviticus, God also says that humans should not eat pigs or shellfish, nor should they wear clothes made out of two different types of thread or get their hair cut. As for the quote that justifies the belief that homosexuality is bad, a lot of people also interpret it as men shouldn't tell falsehoods to other men like they do to their wives.  So why do people make such a big deal out of one thing that may or may not be in the Bible?

Some people believe they're entitled to sit in judgment of others. But really aren't we all just trying to live a good life, take care of the ones we love, feed and clothe our children, and be good to those weaker than us? Gay and straight, we're just trying to live.

That's how I feel, too. It doesn't make sense why people feel they can judge so strongly on things like these.

People are just afraid of things they don't understand. Most people who are freaked out about sexual orientation think they don't know anyone who isn't straight, and that any other orientation is weird. I think as more people realize that one in every ten of their neighbors is gay, it will become less of a big deal.

Sexual orientation is one of those taboo subjects that has been so controversial throughout history. I guess mainly through fear and ignorance those in positions of influence have taught that certain sexual types are to be got rid of basically - interpreting God's word literally in certain cases - because they don't fit in with stereotypes and the mainstream. Bizarre.

The Bible is full of these maxims, laws and decrees - rooted in ancient tribal cultures - put into SELECTIVE practise by those in religious power.

I find it all abhorrent. I find it hard to believe that homosexuals are still persecuted and sentenced to death even today, in some Christian (and Islamic) countries.

Why these ancient texts are deemed to be valid and true in this day and age is beyond me.

Read Romans 1:24-32, if believer this response should be reversed!

Kara:  It is "in the Bible" and was carried over into the New Covenant (Romans) as well as in the Old Covenant (Leviticus)!

Romans 1: 24-32 which says in part, "Wherefore, God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies, between themselves; (v26) For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections; for even their women did exchange the "natural use" for that which is "against nature;" (v27) And likewise also the men, leaving the "natural use" of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, "men with men" working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was fitting. (V28) And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God "gave them over to a reprobate mind," to do those things which are not seemly, (v31) Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful; (v32) Who, knowing the judgment of God, that they who commit such thing are "worthy of death," not only do the same but have pleasure in them that do them."

Therefore, it is a "big deal" according to the Word of God!

But in the Bible there are also a lot of things that people don't make a big deal about, like eating shellfish, or divorce. So why is this one so much worse? That's what I really don't understand. I'm not sure I'll ever understand it, I guess.

NEW COVENANT "fulfilled" the LAW! Eating: Rm 14:14;Acts10:15! Divorce: If not "initially" "...only in the Lord," not married in the sight of GOD (I Cor 7:39)! What divorce if not married in the sight of GOD unless one came to GOD during marriage?

Kara......Intelligent, sane, mature & educated individuals do NOT make sexual orientation a big deal.
There are numerous reasons why some people find it necessary to vocalize their opinions, usually quite negative.  In many Countries, especially the Middle East, it goes well BEYOND a big deal. Homosexuals are put to death, most often being brutally tortured prior to being murdered  The simple explanation is their dominant Religion, "Islam."

The U.S.A is not without it's bigots, of course.  We have groups & organizations like "The Westboro Baptist Church" whose leaders and members are grossly ignorant, hateful & unreasonably self-righteous.

While the numbers of people who find the time and energy to make sexual orientation a big deal has decreased considerably over the years, it will always exist to some degree. Just as racism insists on remaining in our midst despite our efforts to erase it.

It's a simple fact of human nature.  The vast variety of cultures, lifestyles, religions, and attitudes on life in general create many, many different points of view.

It truly requires each and every individual to educate themselves, open their minds and hearts and progress to a higher level of humanity.

I second that.  Sexual orientation is a non-issue.  There are far more important things in the world than a person's sexual orientation.  Whatever a person is heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual is of no consequence at all.  As long as they are consenting, respectful adults, it is really no one else's business.

Yes, the bible condemns homosexuality.  In fact, the bible condemns all sexual activity unless it is marital &/or generative sex.  Sex for pure pleasure is viewed as immoral in the bible.  However, no intelligent person believes that the bible is valid.  The bible was written in ancient times & by ancient people who had a very narrow perspective on sexual matters.

Then provide a book with more "accurate fulfilled prophecies" other than Bible WRITTEN before Bible or your analogy is WEAK!
You seek a "wide perspective on sexual matters" to TRY & justify your unrighteousness, but it WON'T HAPPEN!
