Should Christians follow the Ten Commandments?

I recently heard a preacher on television say that Christians should not use the law and the Ten Commandments as a guide for their life.

Of course they should.  The misunderstanding is this: In the "Old Testament" man was unable to follow the Law, or teachings of God.  In the New Testament,  Jesus came and fulfilled the Law, or Teaching.  What God gave man in the Old Testament was actually a culture.  But it was a culture man was unable to live up to.  By Jesus fulfilling it and taking our penalty for failure, we have not received the Spirit of God through faith in Christ which now will empower us to live the unlivable.  Think about it, even in today's society murder is still wrong.  Adultery  is still wrong.  And so on.....So why not tap into the new life Jesus made available to us and start living on a higher plane?  Be Blessed!

I agree with you 100%. The preacher did say that we are now free from the Law because of what Jesus did on the cross, but to say that we should not live by the Ten Commandments had me scratching my head.

Someone must have misunderstood the preacher.  No one in their right minds would tell anyone not to follow the 10 commandments as well as the laws of the land.  These are basic decency rules to live by.  Although they may not actually be 'mortal' sins that will send a person to eternal hell, they certainly are basic decency rules for everyone to follow.

I hope I misunderstood him, but he clearly said we should not follow the Ten Commandments because if we break one we break all.

Some preachers cause more harm than they do good, and should not be preaching at all.  We know in our own hearts what is logical, decent and right without anyone making such silly statements like we are idiots. These naysayers need not be followed.

Hi D.William, I totally agree; to love the Heavenly Father we "must" follow His commandments. There is no two ways about it.

I thought that I needed to follow the 10 commandments (Old schoolmaster). Not any more. I am free from that bondage. I follow the law of love, as no law is greater.

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’[d] 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’[e] 40

Of course we are free from the bondage of the Law, but if we follow the law of love we will not murder, or steal, or lie or do any of the things the 10 commandments talk about.

The 'Law' consisted of three type-
Worship Law: the processes and ceremonies used in the Temple Worship
Civil Law: How to handle the types of legal issues of the day
Moral Law: the absolutely binding values of God's holiness

The first two types do not apply to modern times. The Moral Law, being absolute, does indeed apply to all people at all times. We certainly should follow the 10 Commandments.

christian should be themselves and try their best to do the right thing in that way you are keeping the ten commandments, but when you see it as a must do you loose yourself and just get tired of it.

One should be guided by faith then love. Prayer will help us to answer those transcendental questions. Prayer and service, aspiration and manifestation. Believe (faith), Love, pray, serve ...

Of course Christians should follow the ten commandments, some may try to skip some commandments like the commandment about not to eat pork. There are other religions that are disciplined enough to follow commandments and they are not Christians. The people of Christ should be more disciplined because we have the "anointed one" living on the inside of us.

I follow the law of love, not the 10 commandments. Why put the yoke of laws on believers that are impossible to follow.
