The SOUL``Spirit. What is your understanding? Do you believe Human beings HAVE a SOUL
    OR~Do you..

believe we ARE A SOUL/Spirit at our basic core/nature, within a physical bodily form?

I believe that we are made of the same stuff that makes up the Earth, stars, and the entire universe. If we have a "soul", it is the energy that exists throughout the universe.
The universe is infinite energy + infinite mass + infinite space.
Therefore we have always been part and parcel of the universe and we always will be.
We aren't "born". We don't "die", we just change forms.

That's a very interesting way of looking at things. When I was researching a hub on the existence of God I found this was the view of many Ancient thinkers like Marcus Aurelius.

Hi Paula. I believe we have a Soul within our physical body. The Soul was sent to the University of Planet Earth to continue learning and developing our Spiritual path. The body houses the Soul. Our Spirit is that which always is - eternal. My analogy / theory is like the grape. Ok, LOL, if you must - hahaha

A human being is like a grape, growing and receiving energy from the Sun till it is ripe. When the grape is ready the skin (physical shell) is removed and dies during transformation. The pulp (Soul) is processed into new wine (Spirit).

We are children of the Universe, part of All That Is.  Like the Sacred Lotus we should strive to rise above the muck and mire below to achieve our Highest Truths.

I think that is a beautiful way of putting it, Phyllis. The only thing I would change is to say that "the human is a soul that occupies a body" because our awareness resides in the soul.

We are at our core souls. That energy that flows between souls is not organic. Even though science can now monitor the energy it does not make that energy simply a matter of biology.
I find it interesting when people talk about NDE's they get consumed with an experience and lose focus of the fact that the body is dead without the soul and spirit that makes it live. If the body is alive it is the home for the soul. If the body dies it is no longer the home for the soul. So revived dead bodies are still dead unless the soul returns to them.
If you can travel the world over and see all classes of people and joy and happiness and disease and famine, there is  one thing that you will always find and that is love. It just resides in all people save the souless ones and they are rare and very strange. We call them psychopaths somehow the soul is just not at home.
But there is no denying that in general all people have some love. That is a reflection of the soul learning to be alive.

First, consider this contribution as being of 'me' as 'I' present a view **. This is how I conceive those relationships you inquire of. It remains so while I continue my journey seeking reasoning while consider why to change it. I do consider science while know it uses at times assumptions for theories still unexplained and its roots is philosophy.

** A branch of science - social psychology (Symbolic Interactionism) hold the self is composed of the social 'I' (External self) and the 'Me' (Internal Self), which for this 'self' or any 'self' based on that theory/view 'me' will really be never known. Its foundation as all science is based on philosophy in this case is pragmatism.

To explain this view I offer first a Haiku Poem . . .

    sunrise a circle
    flowers, trees, geometry
    eyes, inspired, poem

For ‘me’ seeking to have an understanding of or for ‘soul’ I dance around it a little or else I will write on and on and on exploring seeking new discovery. For ‘me’ it comes down to “No pressure . . . have fun, fun, fun . . . as best as can be” or enjoy the ‘spirit’ of the question you asked Paula. :-)

It is with my body writing having created a conceived image seeking illustrating something of least this singular ‘self’ from my mind as a notion inspired by the question. Emphasized is ‘perhaps’ there is some ‘soul’ with this answer. Perhaps it can be likened to that hit “I Try” by Macy Gray expressed by its genre soul music. I have not been able to explain music no more than inspiration without some concept of soul . . . or simply . . . I dun’no . . .

There is no scientific evidence to support the existence of a soul or spirit, so I'm going to assume there is no such thing. But if we would like to suspend reason, we can pretend that we are "spirit" beings that somehow preside in a living body...then leave upon the death of that body. Makes for great fantasy.

    1. MizBejabbers profile image91
MizBejabbersposted 9 years agoin reply to this

You sound like my daddy. However you haven't dug deep enough. There is now scientific evidence enough to get scientists to realize that there is an energy expulsion of some kind after the body dies. They've measured it at 9 ounces. Or is it 9 grams?

    2. Phyllis Doyle profile image95
Phyllis Doyleposted 9 years agoin reply to this

That is true, MizB. I believe it is 9 ounces. They weighed the some people before and after death and there was definitely less weight after.

    3. Austinstar profile image86
Austinstarposted 9 years agoin reply to this

That 9 ounces thing is a myth. It has never been duplicated by another medical examiner or scientist. There may be some fluid loss after death which could account for the discrepancy.

My mistake, Lela, sorry. The soul does not weigh 9 ounces,  it weighs exactly 1/3000 of an ounce. Physicist Dr. Elke Fisher points out that scientists were careful to account for all weight differences including air leaving lungs.

Wow, Paula, this is a doozy!  And what terrific answers!  Way beyond my scope of intelligence.
I am a 'see Sally run" person.  I try to be simple, as I understand simplicity much more than the logical left brain.  (What a gift God has given us, our brains! - SO VALUABLE)
Even though I believe in God and the resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ, I still struggle.  I have seen the current movie, Risen, three times.  When Jesus died on the cross, a deep breath flowed from Him...and He said to God the Father, "Into Your hands I commend My SPIRIT.
Therefore, I believe the Spirit leaves the body at death and goes into eternity.  I often look up quotes of famous peoples's last words when they die and it is amazing what they say!  I know Steve Jobs, when he died, his last words were, "WOW, WOW, WOW!"
Then there is the SOUL.  My childhood prayer, 'Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my SOUL to keep, if I should die before I wake I pray the Lord my SOUL to take."
I guess at this point in my life I would have to say that any good that comes out of me physically, verbally, or even alone, is the manifestation of the SPIRIT in me.  Without the Spirit of Christ in me, I am nothing.  No one can really break my Spirit if I have Christ.  But when I am deeply hurt by others or heartbroken, I think that may come from my heart and SOUL.  Yet, I do believe somehow that the soul and Spirit are entwined.  This is one of the great questions I will have for God when I go into eternity.  A very profound question, and thank you Paula.

Both, Paula I know and I believe, we  the human have three separate parts, the body, the soul (our conscious intellect, will,  and emotions) as well as the SPIRIT. We read " there is a natural body and there is a spiritual body." Our spirit body have a form and shape corresponding to our physical body. It puzzles me how few people would like to talk about this "real" spiritual world  except within the satanist's religion as  they practice astral projection...
As soon as  our spirit is  reborn into the Life-giving Creator's likeness we have  a conscious awareness of our spiritual body as we do our  physical body. We can walk  and talk with God in spiritual realm.  Those who do, will not insist on " scientific "proof - there isn't any - only practical supernatural realm of a higher living. You know it by  experience, as soon as facing a person or a  group, our spirit senses either the spirit of joy and exaltation or a spirit of  depression and ill. In my case a discernment gives me idea how to react... I never argue the matter of  eternal truth, while on the other side do not provoke. Inside of my spirit, I take authority - and  leave it open  to everyone seek and find...

What you guys call "soul", I call "our quantum design". It's a longer story than I am planning to present here, but here are the basics. Intuitively, not by any scientific evidence, I think that we are designed perfect in our quantum form. Quantum, as all you know, means "how much?, and is sometimes symbolized by a question mark. It denotes a physical state that's flickering between energy and matter  -  making us ask "how tiny is that matter form before it turns into energy"?
Subatomic particles are said to be more like "pieces of information" than matter. On that subatomic/energy level we are perfect in our design. But then happens that transition between that level of existence into a Newtonian, material form called "our bodies".

During a meditation I got this image of oxygen and hydrogen, two gases turning into water  -  which now doesn't behave anymore as two gases, but a liquid. Metaphorically, something similar happens between our personal realms between quantum design and a body. Newtonian laws screw up our perfection, "perverting" it into behaving like that metaphorical "water".

Our DNA is the bridge between the two realms. Our cells are basically whole organisms, with a nervous system, immune, elimination, respiratory systems, they communicate, and they go crazy, like in cancer. So, in the process of evolving, the body respected the principle of analogy, so cellular intelligence gave our head something like brain.(I personally think we were genetically engineered by space visitors  -  sorry religionists).
All awhile, our quantum design is intact.
When some folks pray, or do qigong, or pranic, or spiritual forms of healing  -  they MAY get in tune with their quantum design. Being immersed into the quantum soup of everything in universe that's "entangled", quantum design may affect events at a far distance, attract or repel "things" of different or same/similar frequency. For example' two electrons that were in some kind of a relation  -  when set apart by a galaxy would still affect each other's behavior like identical twins.

So, back to the "soul". If you like the name, fine with me. If you don't care about my little theory, fine with me. Now ask me about all the experimentation I have done on myself, my vitality, my model of emotional functioning  -  and I may say, "go figure it out for yourself what can be done", because I have no patience with those who just thrive on proving me wrong  -  and a ZERO interest to prove myself right.

    Soul IS.

We have a soul and it is can not be destroyed. The source of all life on earth and the source of entire universe is one and the same. The big bang is nothing but creation of the universe by god. Scientists say that before the big bang there was a singularity but what was before that. Stephen Hawking thinks that  there was nothing beyond that and we can not measure what was beyond that. Hardly 1 percent of the universe is understood by modern science. An atom in not known entirely. We know nothing but still science says that we may find a way. Phenomena like Ndes and astral projection are just disregarded on the basis of unusual brain activity. Anything that science can not explain it simply does not exist. Science can not explain god and therefore god is disregarded too. I just want to ask one question to all the scientists? In Hanuman Chalisa which is a prayer to Hanuman( the monkey god) the distance between earth and sun is mentioned. Recently modern science has confirmed that the distance mentioned in the text is correct. So here is the question: how did some ancient people with zero scientific knowledge found the distance between earth and the sun? I suppose they were souless and they guessed it. Just kidding but my question is serious.  I think we have a soul and I am 100 percent sure. I am sorry but I am just annoyed by modern science. I will end with a quote from the great genius Nikola Tesla "The day when science begins to study non physical phenomena it will make more progress in a decade then it has in all its centuries of existence" Tesla inveneted Alternating current and we still use it all over the world.

In my view, the soul is our innermost being. It is the best and brightest of who we really are. There are some who are “soulless” having denied their best selves---over and over again--- through lies and any wrong or false action(s). When we honor our souls, our entire being expands and we begin to reflect our soul on the outside---for all the world to see. Thus, our soul is not merely contained “inside.”

Some say that the soul is our “spiritual” being, which has been alive for eons and will continue its journey after our physical deaths. I like the idea that the soul lives on, but I really don’t know, nor do I worry about it.
The one thing I do know is that every time we stand for justice, every time we defend the vulnerable, and every time we sacrifice our time for another human being---that is when we have honored our individual  souls. On the other hand, when we deliberately maim or attempt to destroy another person’s spirit, then our own souls will shrink---because we have dishonored that which is our “highest” self as well as the “self” of the other.
I also believe that some of the most unlikely and misunderstood individuals have the greatest souls. ...Wonderful question.

Personally yes I do! Put simply I believe that mankind was made in God's 'image' but God doesn't have a body (unless you count the physical body of Jesus that came about after creation) so that must mean we have a soul and a spirit.(the soul being the house of the intellect and reason wheras the spirit is the will)

I believe we all have an essence that holds our core values, emotions, and acts as a moral and emotional compass.  I also believe that we can allow ourselves to become mired in the mundane, immoral, or illegal parts of life which can put a layer of film on that essence, stopping it from performing it's guiding task.

Quite a deep & enlightening belief, RJ.  Yes, the term "essence" is the ideal one to describe the "soul."

Yes, I believe in the Soul. I also believe because of that we never really die, just out bodies give out. I've had experiences with family members who are (were) alive but in different parts of the country. We've visited. It's happened to my mom, too. Perhaps it's our American Indian blood that makes us attuned to Spirit. And I'm thankful for it. I've been told that I have "visited". Once by my dad and another time by a friend.

I've even seen people that are dead that I never knew, but knew of. One was a little boy about 5 years old. He'd peer around the bathroom wall when I was getting ready for work. This was when I was married to my second husband. Apparently, he'd had a brother that didn't live past infancy. Somehow, he came to visit, but only I saw him. Why he only progressed to age five I have no idea, but there's no doubt in my mind it was my ex-husband's baby brother. He never saw him, though. Strange...

So, YES! I believe in the Spirit. It is who we are. The outer appearance the rest of the world sees is simply a casing to protect our spirit as it grows and strengthens.

As yet I haven't lost anyone close to me. But I have lost my pets. Something odd happens just about 2 months before they pass away. I start to feel disconnected from my pet. I feel like I have lost something. I don't undetstand. I feel really horrible that I feel that way to my loved pet. Then I find my pet dies not long afterwards. So if this is the experience of soul? Then yes I believe we have a soul. Or a part of something bigger than us and we are more connected to one another than we realize. I think that that period of feeling emotionally disconnected was my pet preparing to pass over and letting me know his time was up.
