   Youth is wasted on the young when we have our youth killing our young. When we have our youth selling themselves by the dozen in order to make a quick dollar. When we have our youth using drugs as a crutch and then thinking that no one holds the ability to understand their demise. We need to stop the wastefulness and recruit our young into a brighter and more prosperous future.

   I could not disagree more with Clouds Among Us.  This saying refers to us older people who remember our youth as a pretty naive time, when we could have used the wisdom that comes with age and experience to make better decisions, have more confidence, and experience life more fully in our youth.   That is it, pure and simple.  It does not in any way carry the negative dreadful connotations that are expressed by Clouds.
   
   Yet, I must take a moment to acknowledge those concerns, and I share most of them.  However, this saying does not refer to this.

   Well my analogy to this saying is trivial and vain, nothing heavy or philosophical, but here goes: when I was young I thought I was too heavy and not pretty enough. And I weighed 105 cellulite-free pounds! Today, of course, I would kill to have that smooth, unwrinkled face, that tiny waist and weigh 105 pounds. Now that I'm in my 40s and have a "mom body" with cellulilte and wrinkles, I can appreciate how I looked back then. I wish I would have enjoyed it like I would enjoy it now, but I was too dumb to realize how good I had it at the time. So yes, you could say that in this way (and in many other ways) my youth was wasted by my being young!

   What does the saying, "Youth is wasted on the young," mean?
   It means that young people have everything going for them physically; they're in the best health they will ever be in; their minds are sharp and clear BUT they lack patience, understanding and wisdom which results in so much wasted effort. Whereas someone who's lived and learn now knows what to do with all that ability of the body but now doesn't have the body to do it with!
