What to see at Amsterdam : capital city of Netherlands (Holland)

Netherlands is located at the northwestern Europe and is bounded by the Germany to the east and Belgium to the south, and the North sea to the north and west. The country is known for its liberal policies towards sensitive issues like homosexuality, prostitution, drugs, immigration, euthanasia and abortion. For a long time it was a neutral country and they are also known for windmills, tulips and tall people. They speak the Dutch language and the currency is euro, the conversion is 1.00 Euro = 1.44 U.S. Dollars.

Amsterdam is the largest and capital city of Netherlands and it is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The seat of the government is located at The Hague. and the type of government is constitutional monarchy.

What to see at Amsterdam:

To be honest, I was culture shock when I went to Amsterdam. I have been to "red light districts" like in Bangkok, Hong Kong etc. but this one from Amsterdam is a lot different. Their red light district is beside the churches, and by the way churches in most Europe countries are usually closed because nobody goes to church anymore except on some occasions. Some churches serve as housing for some art works.

Amsterdam's red lights district is the place to find women inside cubicle glass naked and they are all lined up and people passed by to look at them including customers, if a person want to pay the woman for sexual services, they can actually met there and close the cubicle, then there is a door which connects the cubicle to a room. The district is located at the Walletjes, Amsterdam's and getting a camera is a breach of etiquette so you aren't allowed to get pictures of the women in the glass cubicles too.

Prostitution is legal in this country but they are taxed and women have to be monitored by the health department, they issue permit to those who apply for it, and they also ensure that they have health certificates. The women prostitutes are mostly migrants.

Amsterdam is crowded like Paris and London. Many of the people roaming the streets are tourists and they are all busy walking along the side of the road, and visiting the city’s shopping center, red light district, museums and other attractions. Some are just sitting down at parks too. You cant see a plantation of tulips at Amsterdam but it is available in the nearest district of Leiden. The main things which are also attributed to Netherlands are: wooden sandals, windmills, and its canals which are located all over the city and the whole country. They needed these canals because Netherlands is below sea level, there is always the danger that the place will submerged in water.

Museums are the main tourist attraction in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum are the favorites. The Wax Museum Madame Tussauds with lots of waxed famous people inside the museum is a nice place to go. Pierce Brosnan’s wax can be seen at the entrance of the museum.

The Sex Museum throughout more than 20 years of its existence, not only managed to collect many hundreds of interesting pieces of art, unique objects and rare old photographs, it has a class of presentation of pornography and managed to bring together in a nice way and very organized one.

Coffee shops which served “pot” or marijuana. There are designated places for this, usually one whole block in the city are all coffee shops and small eateries too. Upon entering the coffee shops, you can ask for menu for example coffees mixed with the pot and you can be seated and smoke too. Only those who are 18 years old and above are allowed inside coffee shops.

Amsterdam is a walkable city and almost all people are walking or either riding by a bike. There is a tram and bus services owned by the government too so it is very accessible even when you go to Rotterdam and nearby places like Leiden etc. Rotterdam is only 45 minutes away by train and the place has skyscrapers establishments.

Amsterdam has lots of shopping areas and nearby places like Leiden have flower plantation where you can see tulips in bloom, wonderful. That is what I am excited about when I went to Netherlands, their tulips are all in bloom, wonderful.

Souvenirs to get: wooden sandals, windmills, tulips replicas and many sex toys.
