   To me you can't go wrong with any of the States you choose as they are all beautiful.  I love California, but so does everyone else so the real estate market is very competitive.  Washington is beautiful, but I think the weather would get to me.  So the best of both worlds?  Oregon.

      i'm originally from CA but i'm currently in TX, i've been to Oregon recently and it was amazing. i really want to move there.

   If you're essentially liberal when it comes to politics, then I'd have to agree with Kristen:  Oregon would be an excellent choice.  (That's presuming you're looking at getting close enough to the coast to see the ocean occasionally.) 
   
   If you're more conservative, then EASTERN Oregon would be my pick.  The "Left Coast" is pretty liberal, overall.
   
   If you're conservative AND want the beach, good luck.  I've lived in all three states at one time or another and have no interest in going back.  The John Day country in Oregon does have a draw for me, but that's about it.

      I dunno, Ghost, that Eastern Washington area, Spokane going into northern Idaho is not exactly a liberal stronghold.

   California, because it is the most populous state in the country.  That means that more people choose to live in California than in any other state in the United States.  Well, maybe "choose" is not the right word.  Some go there for work and others where born into the state.

   Are we assuming that you are referring to the west coast of the United States? If so, I would suggest California. It is a huge state and offers everything. Mountains to deserts and everything in between. Being the bread basket of America, fresh food can be bought on roadside stands. There is nothing like stopping for strawberries that were picked that morning. The food is varied like the population, so many international choices.
   I am originally from California and it still holds a fond place in my heart.

   I have spent some time in both California and Oregon.  I have been through Washington on my way south from Vancouver, BC.  I would personally rule out California which has had growth slow from 2.1% in 2010 to 0.8% in 2012.  What is that all about?  Most likely people don't like the high taxation.  The sales tax is 7.5%, the highest in the nation.  It's still a great place to visit, but I wouldn't choose to live there.  Oregon on the other hand, has no sales tax.  If I were moving to the west coast, based on my experience, I'd go to Oregon.

      I'm in southern CA, tax here is now 8.0% since Jan. 2013. There are other local cities with even higher tax.

   Washington. I love this state. It is not too cold because of the ocean climate. The scenery is beautiful .I should look up taxes, etc. If I don't move there I will definetly visit!!!!

    I was born in Palm Springs, California - lived there for 31 years
    Lived in/around Spokane, Washington for 15 years (also Coeur d' Alene, Idaho)
    Lived in Klamath Falls, Oregon for 4 years and have now settled in Ashland, Oregon and have been here for two years so far.
    Do you have children? Do you like the snow? Coeur d' Alene, Idaho is a terrific place to raise kids - lots of snow and a short window of summer. 5 Hours from Seattle, 4 from Glacier National Park and around 6 from Yellowstone National Park. Tons of outdoor activities, but unless you ski or snowmobile, winter can be very long. Be prepared to pay state taxes and tax on food at the grocery store too. But housing is extremely affordable here. You can apply for an exemption for your first house owned and lived in in Idaho - which can make your property taxes fairly inexpensive and there is whats called the "Circuit Breaker" exemption for seniors that qualify, which gives a huge break on property taxes for seniors.
    Areas of Spokane, such as Liberty Lake are nice too. A little less winter and no state tax, no tax on groceries either. Washington is 1 of 7 states that do not have state income tax.
    Klamath Falls - do you like horses? Want to live a very slower life? Like outdoor activities? Lots of snow here, but a decent summer. The economy in this town is depressed. Housing can be inexpensive here. Not the worst place to raise kids, but make sure they are involved in a lot of activities as there is not too much to do here. As with all of Oregon, there is no sales tax, there is a state tax and property taxes are not cheap.
    Palm Springs, California - Not the best place to raise kids, but not the worst. Close to the beach, close to the mountains. Beautiful weather in the winter. Extremely hot in the summer. Housing prices vary and as with most areas of California, check out the area before you purchase. A golfers paradise, great for horseback riding and clubs/bars for those that like the nightlife. You can be at the beach in 2 hours and in the snow is 1 hour.
    Ashland, Oregon - Expensive housing but beautiful with 4 seasons. A mixture of people and lots of tourism with the Shakespeare Festival. Two hours to the beach and 30 minutes to the snow. 5 hours to San Francisco and 4 hours to Portland. Not a lot of well paid job prospects, but a beautiful place with lots of sun and no heavy snow. Housing in neighborhing Talent is far more affordable. Quite a bit of shopping in neighboring Medford.

    California, has a little bit of everything and the best all-around weather...not too hot...not too cold, just right. There's a large variety of things to do and see, for all ages. Just to be fair, if you are not familiar with CA, there are earthquakes occasionally, gas costs more,and higher taxes. That's the good and the bad. You decide!

    thanks for the responses i'm leaning towards Oregon to be honest. i was there recently and it was amazing. i would like to move there but it's tough when you don't know anyone there. i'm gonna have to save up and maybe buy a house or something.

       Chucky, My son lives in Portland, so if you end up there, let me know.  I can hook you up with my son and his girlfriend.  It might at least give you somebody who can show you around at the beginning until you make your own friends.

       that would help a lot lol but problem is i gotta take my mom with me since i take care of her. youngest of 3 kids, i'm 22 and i'm stuck taking care of her... it sucks

       thanks. i think i might take you up on that offer. but even if your son is ok with it, like i said, i'd have to bring my mother along since she can't stay with my 2 sisters or other relatives.

    I vote for California or Southern Oregon.  They are both beautiful but California has more traffic and more updated malls and jobs.  I absolutely love California weather although Oregon and Washington are beautiful states too.
