Where's your favorite place in the UK (apart from London) and why?

   Warwick is a wonderful village as is Kennilworth and Coventry although Coventry is a bit industrial for me I do love the cathdral there.  Stratford would be my top place after Bath but they are two totally different places in terms of why I love them. Bath has the cathedral whichis just amazing. However, I love to shop in Stratford, spend the day in a lawn chair relaxing by the river and reading and top off the day with a play at the theatre at night. The saturday market is, in my opinion, one of the best in the area. The midlands is a beautiful area of England. Burton on Water is another beautiful little village.  Just driving through this area is a pleasure.

   I live near Guildford which is located just south west of London and the area is generally a nice place.
   I recently created a hub about five cool things to do in Southern England, you will also find some neat photos in there too.
   
   I like Winchester as it's a great place to hang out in summer time and if you have guests with you they will probably like the cathedral which is huge! Taking a stroll along the river is also very pleasant.
   
   Portsmouth is a wicked as it's by the sea, you can tour the Historic Naval Dockyard, look over the port from the viewing platform on the Spinnaker Tower and it's not too much of a drive to some nice beaches along the south coast or to neighbouring Southampton.
   For shopping I normally go to Reading/Guildford/Kingston Upon Thames, plenty of choice and easy to get to with good rail links and parking etc.
   I think Oxford is one of the prettiest cities I have seen in England. It's worth booking a tour guide as there is so much history and lots of bits you could easily miss if you went unguided.
   In southern England there are also tons of outdoor hiking/walking/cycling routes such as the man made Basingstoke canal, New Forest and Great Windsor Park. Also the weather is often more favourable than other, northern parts of the country.
   So while I like most places in the United Kingdom the South is my favourite.

   I come from Wiltshire and it was a lovely place to grow up. We have the old castle, stonehenge, savanac forest, old sarum, and the list goes on. It is a very historical place with lots to see. 8 years ago i moved to Nottingham, and was shocked at how cheap things were (compared to down south) so am confused by L Andrew Marr's comment. I only lived there 2 years but found the people to be very friendly and my boys loved going to Sherwood forest to learn all about Robin Hood. As well as Wiltshire, i also like Cornwall and York, both beautiful places to visit.

   Easy - the Lake District.  I lived in the South East for 22 years and headed up here just 1 year ago.  We live by the sea on the edge of the national park and spend most of our weekends hiking.  In turn this has led to me blogging about it all and eventually finding Hubpages where I now write hubs about the north of England.  Unfortunate circumstances drove our move, but we're SO much better off up here than we ever were down south (mentally NOT financially!).  Beats me why anyone would say London!  :-)

   I have to disagree that the Midlands are a dung heap.  Where I live, there is a large choice of £1 and 99p shops and the amount of saliva on the pavements is a lot less than it used to be.  And street fights only happen on a Friday evening.  And wearing headphones blocks out the constant noise of gangsta rap.

   I have seen Bath mentioned. It is a beautiful city in the South of England, it has a good ambience too. However, for the North of England, if you want to see one of the most complete ancient city walls I strongly recommend York.

    I plan to carry out a set of interviews on people of different age ranges to find out people’s memories/stories about places they have been and why they love a particular place in great britain.     The best place in the UK for me is Beaconsfield. It is so gorgeous in this area. The buildings are old and quaint, and the people are so friendly. When the sun is out it is like a movie set. I urge people to go and visit. It is a very quiet place, but it is extremely beautiful.

    I live in Carlisle in Cumbria which is on the northern fringe of the lake district.
    
    So I would say my county of Cumbria being that we have the most beautiful scenery and views you could wish to see.

    I was born in Wales but left for NZ when I was 5 . In 1997 we lived in Chepstow for a couple of years and loved exploring Wales - England & Scotland .Cornwall was a favourite - York- Lake District - country side of Wales - so many beautiful places can't mention them all ...
    We plan to visit next year and hope to see as much as possible

    My favorite place is Lake District because of its natural amazing beauty. You can do a lot of things there like boating, walking on the forests, bird watching, visiting the Hadrian Wall, the remnants of the Roman Empire, visiting Beatrix Potter museum, the autor of Peter Rabbit and many other things you wish to do.
    
    Wales is also a nice place but I have been there for only an overnight sleep before crossing the Irish Sea to Ireland. I love to stay there for at least a week to visit Snowdonia.

    I have limited time in UK but I did love Canterbury. It was small and quaint and boasted a really great Canterbury museum, which for fans of the Canterbury Tales, would be a must see.

    While I primarily have travelled all over England, I think my favorite UK spots are Cardiff in Wales, Edinburgh in Scotland, and Dover in England (though you can see France on a clear day.)

    I'll put in a vote for my home county's city of Cambridge - absolutely wonderful. Plenty of fascinating free museums, historical buildings mixed in with modern cafes and restaurants. There's always something to do and I love the student atmosphere! The surrounding countryside is positively beautiful, so scenic and picturesque.

    For a small island we have so many hidden treasures (even in the Midlands!).  I've just recently 'hubbed' on this but my favourite places include Pembroke - the most fabulous beaches, Northumberland for it's stunning wilderness, York - medieval architecture with a Viking flavour, the Peak District (often overlooked and yet a fabulous part of the country) and the New Forest in Hampshire.
