what text actually counts towards your hub's word count? I know the words in the text capsule count, but how about rss feeds, news, links, polls, etc.? Is this text included in the word count?
No, only the text in your text capsules counts.
Our intention is to count words that are typically original (as opposed to syndicated). At present that means we consider words in the text capsule, the photo capsule (captions), and the table capsule. For purposes of product ratios, we also count descriptions that you've added yourself to the amazon capsule.
Don't ask me where I got this from, but ever since I joined HubPages, it's seemed to be common knowledge that a Hub should contain at least 400 words if it's to do well as far as search engines etc. are concerned. Is there actually any truth to this?
I've alsways heard something similar, if not a bit more. SOmething like 400-600. Just heresay though, I don't know how absolute it is...
I've never published a Hub unless I've got it up to 400 words or more and kept it interesting (not filled out with waffle). Actually, those of around 400 are my shortest, and they really do seem short to me. But if Hubs of 200 words do just as well ... well, I could have written many, many more in no time.
An official explanation would be good. Though at a guess I'd say no to RSS Feeds and News. And yes to descriptions in the Links capsule.
If you open up a hub (in normal view, not edit mode) and click on Stats and then Hub Metrics it shows the word count.
Wow, learn something new everyday I guess. I'm still a sort of newbie but I guess that I never really paid attention to the very important button at the top. Thanks! I had no idea that such great information was in there.
Actually, text in Links capsules do not appear to count.
I have three Hubs that I wrote as part of my 30 Day Dance Challenge - one for belly dancing on HubPages, one for ballet, and one for flamenco. Each one is a directory of Hubs on that subject. I created them using links capsules but I wrote my own description for each Hub. They are quite long Hubs, but the word count shows as under 200.
Which is a nuisance because I had one Amazon capsule per category and I've had to delete most of them!
In a few hubs, I copied the material from my links capsules, and pasted into text capsules, so they would go toward word count.
I contacted Hubpages about this and here is their official answer:
We do not like to give a hard-and-fast rule about word count since we do not want people to try and get away with the absolute minimum, but in general a Hub should certainly not be less than 200 words across all capsules. The automated system should take into consideration text content in all capsules the permit text.
Here’s 200 words. Call it a present or heavy sarcasm. Let’s take a subject and write some tosh around, call it an article and publish it.
How am I doing? Sheesh that’s only 33 – better think of some more. Tell you what, let’s just bump this up into a paragraph and then see where we are.
Good – that’s 50 odd. Now it would be cheating to just keep writing sentences about counting the words so we need to move on with a little more constructive comment – the sort that Google likes.
Adsense, money, SEO, back linking and above all folks – lots of quality. By all means write about what you know and believe in, but if you want to get seen then it’s time to get shady (slightly).
I wish I knew where and how to link my stuff – then maybe the money would start to, yes, what else can I say, roll in. Maybe it’s time to learn instead of just trying to write as well as I can.
After all, despite the great improvements in search results, I’m not sure that the quality really has improved – unless of course that stuff on page 1 really is the best….
===========================================================
That above is 200 words. Is it really enough? Seriously? Even with a couple of photos and a quiz and a video and whatever – is that sufficient to be called an article?
Let me know and I’ll try publishing it.
I imagine 200 is the barest minimum. A jumping off point...
If I just write 10 random titles of my existing hubs that will exceed 200 words.
I can't even imagine a product hub under 400 words. I do write poetry but surely I can make my poetry hubs 400 words+ with adding some background with those and I will do that rather than deleting my poems.
thanks for the clarification Paul. I see a lot of hubs that have long link capsules linking to many of their other hubs. I was thinking that couldn't possibly be included in the word count. now I know it isn't.
My hubs all have between 800-1200 words since I tend to write a lot.

As Cagsil noticed, we are in the process of testing out some changes to our text capsule editor. It's been turned on for a small number of specially selected trial users for a couple of days already, and now it's available to all. In order to switch, just change the settings on your...

On another thread, a Hubber suggested that if HubPages had a minimum word count, it would prevent some spammers.I know that a very low word count can get a Hub flagged as substandard, but perhaps it's set too low at the moment?

I use the internet with Firefox. All other websites seem to load just fine, my internet connection is pretty fast, but Hubpages is getting increasingly slower for me. Also, the picture and text problem with not saving when working on a hub is still an issue. I add a picture, upload, put in a...

A very kind soul noticed a month ago that I need to learn how to break up my text with photos or something between the paragraphs when my text is long. She explained how to do it. I tried and couldn't grasp it. Then I misplaced or accidentally deleted her email -- so I haven't...

I think I missed something here but have recently seen some discussions about in-text Amazon links v Capsules. How do you put in text links in, is there a special way? Do I just get the link that I get from Amazon when I go on there and choose the product? Or does this only work for people who have...

The biggest issue I have with all capsules having to be full width is that there now seems to be no provision for sidebar content. I've had to eliminate several sidebar text capsules because although they have supplementary information that would be useful for the reader, they just can't be fitted...
