      Rocky. This is one of the few boxing movie that is about a man who happens to be a boxer and not about a boxer who happens to be a man. THis movie is character driven and the character of ROcky is very realistic. He is flawed and he is very fragile but a good-hearted man at his core. Also, I love the ending. IT wasn't predictable. He doesn't go out and all of a sudden kick the champions butt. He takes a legendary butt kicking but hangs in there till the end. My favorite part of the movie is where Stallone gives the speech about going the distance with the champ. He talks about how noone has ever gone the distance with the champ and if he can just survive the fight and finish then people will know that he isn't just another bum from the streets. Although ROcky loses the fight he has triumphed,he overcame his fears he perservered and the world knows that he has something special within him.

   The Untouchables, excellent (based on) true story, insanely amazing cast too.  There are a few other films, like Martin Scorcese's work with Mean Streets and the Departed, he gives an authentic feel of life in those areas that gives someone like an Englishman myself an idea of different cultures/ways of life.

   Audrey Hepburn movies and any Robin Williams or Johnny Depp movie.
   
   Breakfast at Tiffany's is just adorable with some serious themes thrown throughout. The acting is amazing. I guess I've just watched it so many times since I was little. Roman Holiday, makes me want to ride on a scooter with Gregory Peck.
   
   Robin Williams' movies are all amazingly funny or amazingly serious. Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, The Birdcage, Mrs. Doubtfire, Aladdin, Patch Adams, Bicentennial Man, and Hook. All my favorite.
   
   Johnny Depp is a character actor. He completely embodies the character he is assigned and becomes that person. Platoon, Edward Scissorhands, Benny & Joon, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Finding Neverland, Chocolat, Sleepy Hollow. And ok I'll add Nightmare on Elm Street because its a classic

    Pretty Woman rawks, as well as Back to the Future and Interview with the Vampire.
    
    I suppose if I had to pick my *most* favorite movie it would either have to be 187 or The Caveman's Valentine..both star Samuel L "mofo" Jackson.
    
    
    
    187 basically is about a teacher who gets stabbed in NYC and moves to the West Coast, where...he meets more gangs! The ending is sad but he teaches the kids a great lesson and one of them finally sticks. Its like the movie Dangerous Minds, except..its actually good.
    
    The Caveman's Valentine has Sam being a skitzo Juliart pianoist who finds a dead body in a tree outside of his "cave." The movie is basically watching a crazy person utilize his surroundings, his friends, his contacts to come to an interesting twist.

    Err..187 made me cry. Conversely, The Caveman's Valentine made me squirt stuff out of my nose.

    No Country For Old Men. Most Hollywood movies follow a particular trend. It can get annoying. No Country For Old Men kinda like took me unawares. The movie had this cold depth to it, and the thing that really killed me was that the movie had no music in it. No sound sound or musical scores whatsoever. I like it when directors do something that's so off the wall. I would have mentioned the movies Layer Cake and In Bruges. But the thread said American movies.

    The Philadelphia Story (1940): Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant- Great fun look at "class" women's roles and tabloid reporting with a superb cast. I've seen it so many times I can recite the dialogue.

    I love Usual Suspects. It really keeps you guessing and you can watch it again and again and alwaye see something new.
    
    I like old movies too, like Philadelphia Story (the cast is perfect, the script is great)... most of Humphrey Bogart's movies (because Bogart was the best), East of Eden because I feel it's James Dean's best film. Also, of course, Casablanca is the ultimate best American movie imho.

    I was just about to say Usual Suspects! I love movies with a twist like this, and Kevin Spacey is amazingly talented.
    
    Still, my favorite movie, American or foreign, will always be The Wizard of Oz. I could quote it backwards by the time I was 2, and I will never forget my parents rolling their eyes whenever I exclaimed that I needed to re-watch the "bizza daboz."

    Boondock Saints, Splint Infinity, Moulin Rouge, Undertaking Betty, 300, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Highlander, The Conte Monte Cristo, Dark Side of the Sun, Lady in the Water, Donnie Darko being an actress I love to see movies with great acting.

    Breakfast At Tiffany's - just because.
    
    Top Gun - Never could resist hunks in uniform.
    
    An Officer And A Gentleman - same reason as above.
    
    Electric Horseman - The little guy saving an abused animal.
    
    Pretty Woman - "Bad" girl makes good.  Verrrrry good!
    
    Most any Johnny Depp movie - JD is believable in any role he takes!
    
    The rest of my faves aren't American-made movies.

    I know I will regret admitting this (and I'd like to mention that there are other movies I like), but my "these-days" favorite is Disney's Enchanted.   I liked it so much someone gave me my own DVD of it for Christmas.  I loved the music in it.  I found it funny and clever.  I loved the message in it.  It was just a nice little movie, when there's so much "not-nice" around in the world today.     Believe it or not, my kids' father and I get out the popcorn and watch Enchanted whenever we want some "happy, nice" entertainment.  He laughs that he loves it too, and he says "especially since it's a movie for six-year-old girls".     (My youngest child is in her early 20's, so I have no excuse for owning that movie.)

    After years waiting for him to return from war,they spent only one night before she loses him again because he was shot in fighting...nevertheless,she overcomes this loss accepting what happened regardless of how painful it was to her and believes that the future holds something good and promising(the scene when she says "I looked into the Sally's well again but this time saw nothing,only clouds,many clouds and then the sun").

    American Beauty - Not just b/c the name is so fitting here..this one has great acting (Kevin Spacey on top of his game as usual), love the writing, love the cinematography.
    
    Crash - Serious all-star cast with serious acting. Could have been cliche but I think they pulled it off really well. Heavy - not for date night, but a must-see.
    
    Forrest Gump, of course - Love this flick. Hilarious, touching, culturally relevant (to the US of course - American movie thread here, don't shoot me ).
    
    Donnie Darko - Jake Gyllenhall when ppl were still like "Jake who?" plus his sis Maggie is in it as....his sister! Weird, well done, trippy film - a favorite.
    
    Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- Jim Carrey shows his chops along with Kate Winslet - both amazing when pulled out of generic typecast mode and given a creative script to work with. Crazy, cool flick. Others have tried to emulate its mood but usually just leave you going wtf??
    
    Sorry, more than one but I will stop now as I could go on but those ones are pretty dern sweet if ya ask me.
