How much personal information have you shared in your profile?  If you have been careful, I don't see the problem.  I wouldn't include names.  I post pix of my daughter, but I try not to be too explicit about personal information.  You never know.

maybe if your going to post your digital page, just don't include your kids photos,,, it may invade their privacy.... we all know sometimes anybody can abuse anything in just a snap of their finger's even just a piece of pics.... and we don't want that to happen in our family.
hope it will help,, just my opinion...smile

There's not.  You can find danger in anything.  It is there, but it is everywhere.  I have pictures of my daughter, and I am fine with it.  I don't think it puts her in any more danger than taking her to the supermarket.

I have to say I'd be very uncomfortable posting pictures of my kids.  (They're grown now, and only one of them is "into" the Facebook/MySpace thing; but she says she has it set that only "friends" can see her picture - of course, who are the "friends"?).  We can think we're not including a lot of personal information; but if someone wanted to be bothered to patch together the little bits, it wouldn't be all that difficult to create a more whole picture.

(Of course, I'm not comfortable posting my own picture either.  I've tried to overcome that and found I'm only comfortable with partial pictures or pictures I've blurred with imaging programs.)

It is a lot more dangerous to bank online than to post pictures.  If you are willing to bank online, I wouldn't be so hesitant about pictures, but I wouldn't go against my gut feeling either.  If you are not comfortable, you don't need a reason.

It really has got out of hand worrying about this. Years ago I had great joy at videoing my daughter in her school play. In work a girl I work with was watching her 11 year old son playing in a soccer match. Beside her a proud dad was camcording his son when the referee stopped the match, walked over to the guy and warned him to stop camcording or he would call the match off.

I understand there are sickos out there but why should some decent person now not have the joy of having memories of their kids greatest moments. I despair sometimes at the world we live in !

I agree on that one as well.  We were always video-ing our kids at activities.  I don't think anyone can expect otherwise when kids are out in public activities.  I did have one creepy thing with my daughter in a show once, though.  She had been in years of dance lessons and recitals and took part in a college performance.  After the performance some middle-aged man approached her and was complimenting her on her performance (a little more than just "nice performance").  He may just have been a nice guy, but he singled her out - and it was definitely creepy-seeming.  Still, I don't think you can ban all picture-taking at these things.

Creeps look for kids any, and everywhere.  It is important to watch out for them on the internet and, pretty much, everywhere.  God, I sound like a paranoid.

The hubs with my daughter's pictures have A LOT of traffic! She's very photogenic and of course, I asked for her permission to do so (she's old enough to consent - or not).

Not exactly sure what everyone is so afraid of? With restrictions that will hopefully remain intact, there are few (if ANY) porno type predators here - it would be a waste of their time.

Being into digital scrapbooking myself Jane - I say go for it - this is a safe venue and they're right: telling is one thing, showing is another. You are, after all, trying to "tell" about a subject that is essentially visual.

    1. Marisa Wright profile image86
Marisa Wrightposted 14 years agoin reply to this

HubPages has restrictions on porn, but that doesn't mean predators don't visit. They will be finding their quarry by using search engines. If images of pretty children are their aim, then all they need to do is search Google images.

Having said that, if the children are well-covered in the photos, they're not likely to be of much interest.  Of more concern is privacy theft.  If you post pictures of yourself, your dog, your kids, in identifiable backgrounds, you're probably giving away where you live. Name the people in the pictures and you're setting yourself up to have your identity stolen - someone can easily pose as you and talk confidently about their husband, kids, dog, neighbourhood......

      1. Davinagirl3 profile image59
Davinagirl3posted 14 years agoin reply to this

Predators will look at dressed children. They look at children in ads.  Protecting your children because you don't feel comfortable is one thing, but don't let it be reactionary.

PS I do have the default set at "moderate/approve" - which gives you complete control too. And I also check someone's profile page before "connecting" as a fan or otherwise. If there is nothing there, there's no connection..

Hope this helps you let go of the fear energy - after 4 months, haven't had any problems with anyone - nor am I in the least afraid for my daughter or myself with my own pics. Every picture tells a thousands words...

SEM, I'm almost more concerned about the things that haven't occurred to me than the ones that tend to occur to everybody.  I have the part of me that says, "Everybody does it.  It's not a big deal.  Nobody cares.  It's how things are these days."  Then I have the part of me that thinks, "You have no idea what people are doing or thinking up out there."  Just this morning I saw a post on here about hacking; and - honestly - I have less than zero knowledge about the kind of crap that people think up to try to pull.

A few years ago I changed to a new cell phone number.  I was getting text messages to someone with a humorous screen name, and it was getting to be a pain in the neck.  My son and I would laugh about the messages, because this was obviously a kid who had the number before I did.  Just to kind of be funny (and maybe contact him), I looked up the name on AOL.  From there, I saw one "lead" after another; and just to be funny (I knew my grown son would get a kick out of it), I looked up everything I could find on this kid (who happened to work at Best Buy a couple of towns away from me, but within walking distance to my other son's apartment).  It was humorous, fun, and eye-opening to spend a couple of hours on this little project; but it was also creepy.  I kept thinking how it was good that I'm harmless.  I don't want be paranoid, and I'm not really "afraid" to post pictures online.  Still, I get that "vibe of not being all that comfortable" either.  I think if I had family photos online I'd restrict who can see them.  Even with that, though, apparently (based on the post I saw earlier today) people can hack into accounts.

Appreciate you sharing the other side of the coin Lisa. It comes down to a personal choice from personal experience is all I'm sure. Sounded like a question on the integrity or safety of fellow Hubbers - that's what I was addressing.

My default 'approve or not' is from a few of the blogs I've seen warning of being "too" trusting because it is an open, on the net forum (which are great preventatives) but mostly from my own experience after 3 years of being continually stalked.

Creepy is part of life these days and it is easy for anyone to get into our private files - its even becoming all the rage with twitter to follow someone everywhere. But writing about digital scrapbooking without pics or showing pages seems like giving only 1/3 the information one wants to share...

  11. Lisa HW profile image63
    Lisa HWposted 14 years ago

SEM, I know creepy is part of life, and I wasn't necessarily advising against pictures - only saying I'm a little uncomfortable with it.  That's probably partly my generation (not growing up with the Internet all up and running).  I know I lean toward the "paranoid" in this way.  smile  (Maybe not really so paranoid/believing evil will happen as erring on the side of caution to try to make sure it won't.)  I do tend to be the sort with a generally cautious nature, even if not generally paranoid.  smile .

It is a shame that we have to alter our memories do to predators! My son had attended a pre-school for a bit where we could not take our own photo's of our child! It was a bit alarming to find further the large number of sex predators in North Carolina where we had moved to and really gave me a wakeup call! I tend to keep my family biz close proximatey!

Thanks for all the input!  It is sad, and I agree, writing about digital scrapbooking and not having pictures of my pages is eliminating 1/3 of the content.  As stated before, I'll work on pages that do not show my kids.  Wonder if they'll hunt down my dog? smile

I post pictures of my niece and nephew for my hubs because they are my photo subjects.  I use all of my own pictures, and my niece and nephew are happy to be in my hubs.  My friend Cherish has also posted pictures of her kids on her hubs.  To me it is not a big deal because there are kids in catalogs and advertising all the time, so what is the difference?

I think Davina is right. Dangerous nuts can be anywhere. And most children who are sexually abused are molested by family friends, mom's boyfriend, or family friends, people close by.

I post pics of my gkids, and other family members. The world has a few lunatics, and I choose to ignore that.
My kids, even the grown up ones are not changing their lives to suit some crazy. I take video of my son playing sport all the time. No one has told me not too, and if they did I would fight for that right to do so in court if necessary.
Being paranoid does not help anyone.

Ernest I wrote a hub about removing soot stains and got more traffic from google.au at that time.  I felt so bad for those people. You just can run from fire. Were you affected at all?

earnestshubposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Yes I was affected by the fires. Some members of my family were in several fires in different locations, and the fires were so fierce this time that I could not get contact for over a week with my niece and her three children. I was beside myself with worry. Fortunately everyone survived OK. I was going to do the heroic thing and drive in to rescue them, but no roads were open, so no way in.

He and a neighbor knew if they left their houses would be gone.  Because they stayed behind with garden hoses they were able to save a lot of houses that day because the fire fighters were so thinly spread.
