is it permissable/acceptable to repurpose your own articles here?
Hi. I am finally getting around here. Registered in Jan but JUST getting going. Life's been busy.
Before I do something silly, is it permissable/acceptable to repurpose your own articles here? I've got about 70 some articles and I thought I would take some of my favorites or more popular and modify for use here.

We do frown on duplicate content here at HubPages, and hubs that contain content reproduced in large part or whole elsewhere on the web do get a penalty applied to their score. That said, posting your own content from elsewhere is not against the rules, but we do not allow outbound links or feeds on hubs that are not content unique to HubPages. I would recommend revising the articles in question before posting them to avoid either of these problems.

My first article is still in edit mode but saved.
Now, I'd say I have revised about 20% of the article, kept the same title and have a UNIQUE outbound link not in the original.
I do also have an outbound link to my podcast.
What can I keep and what needs to go?

I can't tell you for sure whether it's up to our standards without taking a look at it. I can say that revising only 20% of the text probably won't cut it as far as avoiding a duplicate penalty, and that whether or not the link is the same as in the original article is a moot point. We concern ourselves with the originality of the content.

One last question since it seems then, you want virtually 100% new content and that means I'll just have to write something unique.

You are the owner of the content, and may do with it what you wish, but if we start seeing duplicates on hubs with outbound links, these hubs may be flagged, whether it's 3 days after the hub was published, or 3 years.
Original evergreen content consistantly performs better in search rankings, so it's not only for our benefit that you write unique content here.

A friend of mine suggested I post articles I have had published elsewhere but own the copyright on and that are not online anywhere and I have just done so with one I had in a magazine two years ago. I have a lot of articles that have been in newspapers and magazines that were not published online or archived so have thought of using some of the best. The ones that are on websites for the publications I have written for I would not use. I assume it is OK if they have not appeared on the Internet?

I was wondering that too- I have tons of columns I wrote that were printed in the local newspaper when I was a columnist, not all approriate for a hub of course but there are some that I would like to dig back up and put them on the web.

Just be sure in these cases that you, and not the publication, owns the content.

Good question- there was never discussion about it- I traded advertising in their paper for my writing- no money exchanged.

From your comments it seems that you are requiring members to place their NEW articles FIRST on HubPages and then they can place them elsewhere on the net?
This seems to be the only way to get the same content out onto many places on the web, which many of us NEED to do.- 96

We're requiring that members place unique content on HubPages, and not place them elsewhere, when using outbound links.
Duplicate content ranks lower in search engines anyway, so you'd be wise to rewrite and tweak your articles if you're using them for promotion or marketing.

If you dig up, repurpose & update an old article that you absolutely own but that did appear somewhere on the internet 3 years ago but is now pretty much buried, and then remove it from the original database so that it no longer is available on the internet, is it OK to then publish it as a hub?

As long as the content of the hub does not currently appear elsewhere on the internet, it's fine.

Greetings! I am new here and am still in a state of confusion over certain issues. I have a query and would appreciate a response from someone.
Is it permitted ... and if it is, is it possible technically to paste a copy-scape icon on hub pages? Thanks!The way I understand how the Google search engine works, it won't index duplicate content anyway. It will index the first instance, and ignore the other, putting it into a "sandbox", where it isn't indexed. This is to keep spammers from posting articles on every site online just to get traffic to their commercial site.
Google will also put a "no follow" on any article with a duplicate link, so if you post duplicate articles with duplicate links, nobody but those on the site you're posting on will see them, and most sites will flag them. Google just changed their algorithm to start doing this, because of all the one page affiliate spam ads that were all pointing to the same site. Some of their major clients were complaining that some of these affiliate ads were beating them in the rankings, so they did that to keep from losing them.
If you'll notice now, on search results, the major sites are always on the first page. This isn't always a good thing, and isn't always fair, but it's the way Google wants it, and they pretty much rule the search world right now.
If you put too much duplicate content up, you'll get ALL your content sandboxed by Google.
Plainly put, nobody likes spammers.

So articles that are elsewhere on the web (that the user owns copyrights on) are allowed to be published on Hubpages, but they are highly penalized by the search engines, I recommend modifying them or rephrasing them.

AlexDuplicate content is always penalized by search engines.
It will recognize it as duplicate and existing somewhere else. This ultimately hurts your article marketing because like with any type of marketing you need traffic and an article that is seen as duplicate... while it may be your copy writing and allowed to be posted on any site... will simply be sandboxed by google's spiders and never indexed.
In a nut shell, you don't want that, you want traffic for your marketing. So what I typically do is take my copy writing and spin my articles. I can re-hash an article in my own words typically fairly quickly. It takes some practice but using a few spins on your original copy writing you can come up with an original copy written article all in itself.
Sometimes I find using my keyword researching and writing with the purpose of SEO based on the keywords I'm using in my article marketing, will generate writing original SEO'd copy written content.
Then I make sure I update and edit articles and my blogs for this purpose and ping them almost weekly. Some IMers will recommend doing this every couple days... As for myself I simply don't have the time to do much more then once a week at best.

I had put my stuff on my Facebook. Then I found out about Hub Pages and joined. I put stuff from Facebook over here as well.
I'm getting hubscore penalties and I think it it from the duplicate work on Facebook.
What if I just remove it from facebook?
