What do you say when someone knocks on the bathroom door?

For some reason, while I am grateful, I am always embarrassed when someone knocks on the bathroom door in public.  Not for a stall when there are multiple, only when it is a one room bathroom.

How do you reply?  I waver between, "occupied" and "out in a second."

It is embarrassing especially if you have to stay awhile. I just say I'm in here so they know it's occupied. The worst is when you have to walk out and face whoever is waiting.

I usually say, Someone's in here, I'll be out in a minute.  Like you, for some reason I feel incredibly embarrassed.

    this has happened to me.........

I said,   I am in the bathroom

a small voice said..........it is Grandma..............

well, I am still in the bathroom and Grandma has to wait.

I get you......37 stalls, and   SOMEONE has to pick the very one that adjoins mine.!

Happened with me several times. I just keep mum. I prefer not to say a word. This usually irks the one waiting outside... Mission accomplished. smile

Funny...but I wouldn't keep mum they just might go get the key and open the door.

This annoys me. If the door is locked this obviously there is someone in it. But I would wait and see if they knock again and if they do then I would be like you, I would say occupied.

Oddly, while I am embarrassed, I am also not annoyed.  I have been in a number of single room toilets with bad locks.  You THINK they are locked and then someone tries to turn the doorknob and you hear a little, "pop!"  and see the door open. EEEEEK!

I'm not too concerned unless the person in the same toilet immediately prior to me left a bad odour - then you must walk out and try to imply that the "zing" was not you... that is a challenge...

I try not to even use public restrooms, unless I am positive the place is really clean.  If someone knocks....I yell, "I'll be out in a minute....just finishing up the paper work!"
They're usually still laughing when I exit!

Great Gawd, have mercy upon this wretched soul. who darest knock upon my door, As the lightning strikes and thunder dost quake, while I in my weakest position a break, stand back, sir, or madam, as it may be, leave me alone and let me pea, shake in your boots, oh rudest interloper, are you but a crazy fiend, or perhaps a weird doper, remove thyself from this, in  my presence to be, thou of little respect and dost thou not see, It is I, the great cable guy, who occupies this fond stool, whilst those of little renown, play as the fool. Ha ha he he,ha,he.he ha, now that I have fouled myself, and soiled my finest clothes, for you, only you, and for who, only Gawd, knows!!! On the other hand and not a poet at heart, I would just say in my feeble voice.."Hello out there..out in a minute, if you please".

I will bet that you would be too 'surprised' to think all of that. Besides, they would probably leave by the time that you finish saying it all.

I normally say "Someone's in here!"
What sort of bothers me is when the person continues to knock, even after you've told them that the stall is occupied! That's happened to me a few times.

"I'm in here" is my usual answer. I don't think I say anything else beyond that.

At home, i would say "What? wait!!!".

But if out side home i wouldn't answer. I will just keep quite.  But i must say Its really not to polite to knock while some one is there. We should wait until comes out.

I hate when this happens. I don't know, I usually say something like 'I'm in here!!' or 'WAIT!' incase they walk in... some people don't seem to wait between knocking and opening the door!

Same thing every time..."Someone's in here!"

If I am in a public restroom, I just simply say "someone is in here."  Although I hate when a person knocks and then tries to turn the door handle.  This happens often at work and then I don't answer because I know the door is locked and the person should just patiently wait until the door opens!

I would say the most obvious question/reply.

"Who is there? There is someone in here at the moment."

Most people take the hint when the door is locked and go away.  Any vocalized phrase will let the person know the bathroom is in use. They all know rats and cockroaches don't talk.

It depends on what you are busy with and what mood you are in. If you are really in the  dirty side of either, perhaps you can shout "S**t"?!
