No one should ever give out their correct date of birth this is the main way of tracing.....Banks use it. But on the web I would suggest no one ever gave such personal info out.......Frankly I don't trust you I don't trust Nigeria.

I use the same date of birth everywhere on line, but it's close to my real one, not my actual one.

Similarly, a very common security question in the UK is "mother's maiden name". I consider that's too easy to find out, so I use (all the time) a name other than my actual mother's maiden name. The bank doesn't care if it's true, just that my answer matches their computer.

You are so right my Country has taught us through several media forums, never tio trust anything Nigerian, We have blocks on all the ridiculous schemes that eminate from Nigeria. It would be a very brave Nigerian, that ever set foot in Auckland, where the Bank of Nigeria has conned many.

Accofranco, you must realize that there are many bad people on the internet who seek personal information so they can steal.  A name and birthdate can be used for many things.

By asking for people's birthdates, you make others suspicious of you. It was a foolish thing to do, even if you did not mean anything bad.  Learn from this and do not ask this question again.

ah ha, a sense of humor, very good.

but my birthday has not passed, I forget that the date layout is different internationally.

    So when i wrote 05/02/1981

that was may 2nd, 1981, i realize the convention for date/month are not standard

Well how about, a site that has to ask for privy info, well in today's credit crunch giving out this info would be un idealistic, considering we cant get right with MIS in the medical industry let's just advance past our health and well being to a internet savvy secluded arena of everybody loves the net free for all with personal data..

      not good guys.

      have a great week..

1)I agree with you on this point. 2)Another problem is that it lends a hand to those attempting identification theft. 3)A lesser problem is that some religions or denominations do not celebrate birthdays and it may be offensive.

Yes i know for sure that some unworthy Nigerians have built a bad reputation for us through may be scam, but it's no reason for you to generalise okay? As for what my dad told me,not to give out family or personal info out,to me giving out just your date of birth (day and month) poses no harm,it all depends on individual.I bet you,no internet wizard can trace me through my date of birth, but if u think u can do it,try it please i would love to see it published soon,it's just that most of u guys just don't like me,may be because of my country of origin yet,i'm proud being a Nigerian, and i hope dearly for better days for my dear country someday,we are only passing through our own revolution, just like America,Russia,French etc. Please stop punishing the masses just because of a man's finger prints.Thank you beloved housemates.Help me to fight scam (forget where it originates from),write hubs to educate people on how to avoid falling victim and stop focusing on a particular country when many others are also involvd

    1. countrywomen profile image60
countrywomenposted 15 years agoin reply to this

Accofranco- I have sent you an email earlier and not sure if you have received it. Anyway since I am elder to you then please consider this as a sisterly suggestion. The same "generalization" that you said people shouldn't get involved and then when you mention that due to "country of origin" i.e., Nigeria then you are doing exactly that by assuming about others. In the other thread Lita/SweetiePie/AEvans are all Americans but they were so supportive of you.

Let me tell you a small incident once in the office a colleague of mine sent me an email about a youtube link (making fun of the Indian Call centers) and maybe due to my mood or him being an American I didn't like it. I didn't respond to it.  Then after about 30 minutes he just stopped by to inquire if I felt bad and when he really showed that much concern then I didn't feel bad. Sometimes we may feel offended by something(we are after all humans) but the question isn't how others act(which we can't control) but how we choose to react to it. If in case sometimes we don't know the right words to say then not saying anything may sometimes be the best course.

I hope you don't take any of my words to heart and have an open mind about folks here(especially about US since you are planning to come here for further studies). The world would be nice if we are nice to the world. If somebody isn't nice to us then learn to ignore it. Attack isn't always the best form of defense. You can always convey you are hurt without pointing fingers at anyone. God knows why I am typing so much but believe me I care for you and want you to enjoy hub pages as much as I and many others here do. And if your elder sister has said anything to upset you then please accept my apologies since the intention wasn't to hurt you. Have a great day smile

Why i reacted badly to "mandybeau's" -ve comment was not just because she said she doesn't Nigerians, but it was because of her statement that: "...i do not trust you..."- refering to me, which was a direct attack but you all must forgive me because i acted nervously and unwise. But its painful when i know all my struggles to stop scam in my country and i also know what i and my family have passed through fighting scam here in my country.Again, i have organized many seminars in universities, polytechnics on the dangers and demerits of scam.

  16. accofranco profile image78

I have also initiated a foundation aimed at teaching youths how to make money legally online and in real life. And please,if i am a scammer, why would i publish a hub to enlighten people on online fraud and scams,in my first 5 hubs here, can't u judge me from this perspective? Please "mandybeau" forgive me and do reason with me, i myself hate scam, honestly i hate it and my father has been struggling to stop scam in Nigeria, please help us achieve this, Lenin passed through this while trying to rebuild Russia.
