So, for the New Year, hubby and I got sick!  Pffft!!

Happy Friggin' New Year, my eye!  I feel like second-hand manure, and you know that can't be a good thing!!

It sent hubby to the ER on the 2nd, with choking on gunk every time he tried to lie down and sleep; had no sleep for 3 nites running.  So, when it got to where he was actually struggling to breathe, it was time for the ER visit.

It is going around big time, I guess, (this, or the flu), as the ER was slammed, and we waited 3 HOURS to be seen!!
Spent about another 5 hours in the cubicle, and the upshot is, it's a virus we've not heard of before, called "RSV," for "Respiratory Syncytial Virus."

According to a couple of friends who are nurses, this is not something new; it's been around a while--but we'd never heard of it before.  The doctor said you can actually have the virus for years, laying dormant, until one day your immune system weakens for one or a hundred reasons, and 'bingo-bango,' you're down with it!

It's a baddie; main symptoms are sore throat, and coughing your lungs out.  His xray showed a small spot threatening to become pneumonia, into which this virus can easily morph.  I just started with the coughing.  I usually get bronchitis from having an ordinary cold, anyway, so no surprise there.  In my case, the 'sore throat' is secondary, not primary, and is the result of all the coughing.

Most affected are the very young, and the elderly.  We qualify for the latter, unfortunately; middle age is behind us.  And I'm worried about my 80-year-old mother-in-law, who now lives with us.  yikes

I hope all of you steer clear of this; swallow that pride, and wear a mask if you're around anyone hacking and coughing!

Weird but cool... a trailer for the new "Death Wish" remake starring Bruce Willis hit the Internet this week... and my old Hub about the original (and its sequels) starring Charles Bronson somehow randomly got a bump in views, even tho I barely even mentioned the remake in it.

    ....so hey, thanks, Bruce.

Well, I just trashed Yahoo mail. Again.

Those ads of theirs slow the account to a crawl to the point that it is useless. I'm finally rid of them and only drop by once in awhile so I can update my ongoing review of them. Makes my day. big_smile

I feel the same way. Yahoo was the first email service I used so I had a lot services tied to my account. But because of the ads and how slow it was I switched over all the accounts I cared about to a gmail. It took a whole day but it was worth it.

I got out of it several years back for that reason, plus, even more annoying, I found their spam filters to be virtually useless!
It is very, very rare that any spam gets through on my gmail addys!

I had an earnings dive twice in the recent past and discovered that the ads had  disappeared from half my hubs; some sort of glitch. Not joking around here. Check your top performers and be sure the ads are still displaying. I realize your post was about traffic, but thought I should post this anyway.

    From an email:

    ----------------------

HOW THE INTERNET STARTED, ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE

Please do not Google or check this with Snopes.  They will lie to you.  Trust me!

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a healthy young wife by the name of Dorothy.   And Dot Com was a comely woman, large of breast, broad of shoulder and long of leg.  Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?"

And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. The sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums.  And the drums rang out and were an immediate success.  Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent.

To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew  It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew to the People (HTTP).

And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung.  They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS  And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. Indeed he did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drum heads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known.  He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are."

And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."  "YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.

Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside.

It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE).

That is how it all began. And that's the truth.

I would not make up this stuff.

Lucky she had those big udders. No mention of Abraham's comeliness, assets. Mildly sexist. Kind of offended me. I'll likely regret leaving a comment. On the other hand, it's a good time for women to speak out and people should be aware rather than letting it all go as if it doesn't matter. We've just gotten used to stuff like this about women.

Sorry paradigmsearch. This isn't particularly about this post. I just get tired of reading so much of the same stuff posted. It bothers me that women are still valued for their big udders.

I noticed it too and did find it a bit disturbing. I was happy to see that Dot was the clever one in the story so I forgave the problematic phrase. You've raised a good point about what we should accept, though.

I'm not moving anything off of HP (yet) but with that in place, at least I have a spot to archive my nonsense if things start going kablooey up in here.

I've burned out on reading the MVEN threads. Whatever will be, will be. The day they announce they are going to mess with our compensation is the day it will really hit the fan.

Meanwhile, ticked off with the HubTool. I updated a hub and 10 minutes later some of the changes disappeared. I was not amused. I just hope it didn't scramble up the hub in other ways that I haven't noticed yet.

Having a Wordpress blog is a good idea. You get a lot of control when you own the blog and can set it up how you want. You might have to learn some new things but it shouldn't be extremely hard.

I actually have run a website and WordPress blog in the past. But I didn't have a plan. So I used it for nothing and pretty much wasted the money I spent on hosting. It was fun to learn and set things up I guess.

As we all know: when traffic rises, CPM drops.

So I gave straight AdSense a spin on my two highest traffic days. The results? Totally unimpressed. Switched back to HP Ad Program. Just thought I'd post this so others who were curious don't have to bother.

I would be more focused on AdSense earnings if I had my own website or if I used YouTube. I also have found the HubPages earning program earns more. Even with little views.

I don't mind sharing this as I am not ashamed. I have Aspergers. This a high functioning variant of Autism. It is probably hard to notice when I post online because I take my time and type things out. But it is more noticeable when I am talking to people in person. I sometimes say odd things or have a hard time listening to people. I am told I don't make eye contact often which is weird for some people. I love to interrupt people. I also have this odd habit of when I get excited I start to yell. I could write a whole Hub (which I might actually do) on how having autism affected my life.

I had to work on my social skills for a job. It turns out just listening to people and starting small talk worked for me. Being a mega nerd I tend to make friends and talk about video games and technology. I still tend to be somewhat shy but not nearly as much as when I was teenager.

Pretty much all endeavors in life are an iterative process. The secret is to just start. The secret to starting is the giving yourself the advance permission to quit at any time. You know you can quit at any time because you know you can go back to it at any time. Sooner or later, you will discover you have a completed article.

      Update.

Looks like FB really, really, really is PO'd at me about putting up that sign. big_smile

I went to see if anyone had left any comments there, and I got this: "error code 500".

I looked up error code 500:

"500 Internal Server Error. The 500 status code, or Internal Server Error, means that server cannot process the request for an unknown reason. Sometimes this code will appear when more specific 5xx errors are more appropriate."

In other words, FB wouldn't admit it and use the specific PO'd-at-user code; they went for the cover-up, catch-all code.

      The internet, what a town.

It really is too bad about the independent writer and the ever-increasing earnings obstacles. What most have yet to realize is those obstructions are not only going to continue to increase, but are going to start doing so exponentially. In other words, I do believe critical mass has been reached. Companies will continue to prosper, but individual writers will not. Both HubPages and Google already routinely engage in collateral damage practices and have done so for years; this methodology is going to be greatly accelerated by both companies in the coming months, relegating the individual writer to that of a next-to-worthless commodity. Welcome to 2018.
