Poetry is an art form. I am sure many poets here understand that it’s possible that they won’t make much money, but they write poetry because they love it. They do get something out of publishing poetry. I know this because I have published a few poems myself. In addition, some people combine their poem with prose facts, which may boost their income.

I do get something out of writing poetry. It's happiness.                                  From my boyhood days to date, poems I recited or sung elevates my mood.

It depends on your goal as a writer. I don't think any poet writes for money. As AliciaC said, it's about producing the art. And as Miebakagh added, it's about joy and happiness. I love writing poetry as a way to express ideas and emotions in ways that touch others or says something they cannot find the words to express. I'm currently working on a book of poetry that I hope is well received. But I don't expect it to make a substantial amount of money. The few dollars I'll make from sales will count as icing on the cake and acknowledgment of my work.

For me, money was never the goal, but enhancing my writing skills, was all about learning. smile But I must say I love those $4 I receive at the end of each month. LOL!

Art is a creation but it is also a means of livelihood for some artist

I write because it's part of me.

If i didn't release these words, my soul would be so restless.

Touching the hearts of others by sharing my poetry is a great reward.

It comes back in little ways, with a friendly note or a stranger sharing your words with others.

Sometimes you get a little monetary gain, but don't hold your breath.

Here recently, in my little community...people are recognizing my name from my pieces published in Dimple Times.

It goes to 5 counties.  Although they don't initially know me...once they hear my name they let me know they have read my work.

    It's an awesome feeling.

I write poetry because it is part of me and I love it, not for the money. I supplement it with other types of writing to make a few dollars, but if you write purely for money it will never be from your heart and lack something.

Some money is to be had, for some work, a person wants money only for necessity.
