Yeah, they had radios and TV when I was a kid!!  Even telephones!!  Gads, it was great to get rid of those 2 tin cans with the string!!

When we were kids, we did the tin cans and string thing....can't remember if we were impressed or not, but I'm guessing not since we didn't do it again.

I just got back from bringing my nine year old son to a hospital. He has ADHD with a healthy dose of anger and aggression, and he's been having a rough time lately. I hate bringing him there but sometimes it's necessary to ensure his safety and more particularly the safety of my two other kids.

I doubt I'll be sleeping much tonight....hope the rest of you do!

Dang Jim - so sorry to hear that!!  I have 3 boys, 10, 8 and 5 (and a daughter, 5).  I can relate to what you must be going through.  I am still up, but geesh.  I hope that things improve for you...

  15. crashcromwell profile image80
    crashcromwellposted 17 years ago

Thank you Steph - It stinks that he has to be there, but the good news is that this is the first time in a few years. When he was five he spent three months in the hospital, as nothing they tried with him worked. I expect he'll be there a couple weeks this time around, and at least we won't be in a constant state of crisis, as we have been for the past couple weeks.

  16. stephhicks68 profile image89
    stephhicks68posted 17 years ago

Well, that must be beyond tough for you!  My daughter was hospitalized 2 years ago for 4 days and I'll never forget the night shifts and constant bedside vigil!  Her issues and your son's are obviously different, but the stress on the parent does not change.  I really hope that it will not be another long stint for you!  9 is so young to be having crises like this!

    Take care,

    Steph

I have faith that the work we're doing today is going to pay dividends in the future. He really has a heart of gold, and after he comes down from one of his rage states, he feels enormous guilt, and I know he is sincere when he apologizes. Earlier today, he was so out of control that I had to physically restrain him. I used to have to do this on a daily basis, but for the past few years, he's been doing so much better that I hardly ever have to. Even now, the only time I would do it is if he is a danger to himself or others. The frustrating part is not knowing what is triggering this rage. He can't tell me, and I suspect the doctors won't either - they'll just try a new medication and see if it helps manage the symptoms, without actually getting to the bottom of what is causing it in the first place.

    Thanks again.

Naaaa. That's just me putting a positive spin on a situation that I don't particularly like. I ws the one who brought our son to the hospital last night, and when I got home my wife was already in bed. Then when the two remaining kids both got up at 6, she's yelling at me that I need to get up because both kids are awake. Now it's 8:08, she's still downstairs, and I predict she will be until at least the time that our one year old goes down for a nap. I'm not a happy camper. I don't mind getting up with the kids - it goes with the job. But it hardly feels like a level playing field here.

Shirley Andersonposted 17 years agoin reply to this

I'd rather hear Nickleback or the Beatles, but I think he only does Bing.

Hey William, you seem to know every possible detail of Bing Crosby's life, so I have a question - tighty whiteys or boxers?

          1. William F. Torpey profile image71
William F. Torpeyposted 17 years agoin reply to this

This one almost slipped by when I wasn't looking, Shirley, but I used to sing "White Christmas" every year at the Christmas parties with our friends. I never failed to offer my apologies to Bing Crosby. As far as Sinatra and the Beatles are concerned, Bing had 396 charted records compared to Sinatra's 209 and the Beatles' 68. I regret to say, rmr, I never even heard of Nickleback.

As I've said on your hub, Shirley, I couldn't tell you about whiteys or boxers, but Bing's second wife, Kathryn, was quoted as follows:

"People who didn't know thought Bing had difficulty expressing affection. Not at all. As I was to learn much later, the secret was in that top button on the pajamas. If it was fastened, it was going to be a quiet read in bed and lights out at 10 p.m. after chaste prayers. If it was unbuttoned, however, watch out."

Thx for the response, William.  I think your answer is an acceptable substitute for the undies question.  I am in awe at the depth of your knowledge about your idol.  I'm sure that your rendition of White Christmas is beautiful.

Essentially, I said (in a guilt-ridden voice) that I would put a RUSH on it.

Have a good day at work!
