Hullo everyone!
A really neato feature just rolled out. Have you noticed it yet? SPOILER ALERT: We've added helpful tips to your Hubs! These show up in the HubTool, right below the Add Capsule box
Tips
There are several types of tips:
General - General HubTool tips that may be useful for Hubbers at your particular level of experience
Conditional - Tips that show up based on the types of capsules you're using (or not using) and other situational factors
Announcements - Updates on important HubPages things!
Category-specific - Tips based on what sort of category your Hub is in (e.g. recipes, technology, personal finance, etc...)
Clicking on the question mark by a tip will open a little lightbox with more information. You can also click the little arrows to the top right of the box to toggle from one tip to the next (if multiple tips pertain to you), or the arrow to the top left of the box to minimize it.
Warnings
This new HubTool feature also involves making warnings much more convenient. For example, if you upload an image that turns out to be pixelated, you'll see a warning on your Hub right under the tip box. When you click on the question mark, you will get a more detailed explanation of what's up- and you will ALSO see the image that is pixelated. Which is super awesome.
The cool thing about these warnings is that you don't just see them only AFTER you've published a Hub or saved a Hub as unpublished. This is super convenient!
And just a note about warnings for those who might find them alarming: Think of them as the red underlines that shows up under misspelled words- they're there to help, not admonish
Mad Props
This is a really cool new feature. Really, really cool. And so we should all thank the folks behind it. Edward Zhang did most of the building- he has been working on this for quite some time and put a lot of thought and care into it, so when you're appreciating the attention to detail on this feature, you're appreciating the handiwork of the Honorable Mr. Zhang.
Paul Deeds also directed the project, and added some of the really cool features such as the pixelated image showing up in the lightbox for that warning. Paul Deeds, you are amazing. But we already knew that.
More to come!
We're still adding tips to the tip box, so if you don't see many, rest assured that more are to come (especially for veteran Hubbers, who will probably see fewer tips than newbies).
If you have any extra tips you'd like to suggest we add, or want to thank Ed or Paul, or wish to point out a bug... well, that's what this thread is for!
Otherwise... carry on.
Fantastic!
Using the new Tip box, I learned that my titles should be less than 65 characters - Google cuts them off after that. I had no idea that two of my titles were a little too long. (They were very specific titles)
Thanks for the new Tips!
Great. Stimulating to see all the evolution going on here. I've come back after time away freelancing full-time, and it's good to see so many tools geared toward creating better hubs. Kudos to everyone at work on all of these improvements.
This is a great new feature if I could just figure out where to find it. Can you please tell me how to get to this new tip box? I feel really stupid asking this question but I cannot find it. Thanks.
It shows up on its own- and we need to add more tips for advanced Hubbers such as yourself! When we do, you'll see them
On one of my recent short stories, the tip box told me 'don't give up your day job' - now that's what I call a great tool! LOL being serious - looks like a neat addition to the design process - thanks for being pro-active and improving Hubpages.
Hahaaa!!! I am so tempted to add that... just sneak it in... to mess with people... >_<
Oh, that would be Awesome!!! Like Nike says: Just Do It!
I have three or four hubs with Dos computer language in the place of a picture or advertisement. At first I saw this on one hub now it is on the first three or four hubs. Also this same mumbo jumbo appears under the comments box. Please help. I don't know where else to place this request. I was looking for the tip box and didn't find any yet but I am getting concerned because more hubs are being affected. Thank you. Also, Simone , I think all of the new changes are for the good of the community. I thank you all for updating the site and trying to keep ahead of some of the more radical changes with Google.
Awesome new features ... Thank you to ed , paul and other members of the team
Is this something we can see in non-edit mode?
Sounds like a nice addition, especially for those just starting out.
Thanks guys and gal.
Naw, It only shows up in the HubTool. But we do hope it makes a difference!
I have not seen this show up. Is it on a phased-release, like the HP ad program was?
Or, will it only show up on new hubs, not older ones being tweaked?
It is out now, though for those with many Hubs and lots of experience will see fewer, and they'll appear randomly. We don't want the feature to be annoying (there has been much discussion of Clippy ) so we didn't want to blast the veterans with info.
Hi Simone,
I have checked 10 of my hubs but couldn't find this new feature. Can you tell where exactly to look for it?
This is great and look forward to seeing them! It is when in Edit mode and appears in the right hand column.
That is cool - I haven't seen them all yet, I may have to update my browser to get all the new tools.
Thanks for the info
I'm not finding the TipTool box. Can someone post a screen shot? That would be helpful. You can press the "Print screen" button on the keyboard to get a screen capture and paste into graphical editor and crop out any personal information.
WARNING: This warning appears to contain a smelling pistake.
^lol, stole my comment - made a better joke then I would have come up with anyway.
May I suggest some sort of jack in the box that shows up on "my account" or "traffic stats" page and pops up and says "Better Luck Next Time" or "Maybe, tomorrow" for the more advanced users? I think it may keep up morale. It would work on me.
I kid, It looks like a really cool tool, Im going to go try it out now.
Instead of "clever" innovations, why doesn't somebody at HubPages have the good manners to answer when a message has been sent to them? I have had one hub removed ("unpublished") because it is maintained that it is a copy... although the "original" was removed... and another still is marked as a copy although it never has been.
Hiya Twilight Lawns! I take it you sent the email to the team? We're a bit overloaded right now, but we will get back to you as soon as we can. Thanks for your patience on this.
Where did you get the idea I was being patient? This has been going on for days and you or your "team" members haven't had the good manners to reply. Would you just prefer it if I were to delete my attempted poet permanently?
If that is what you require, how about letting me know?
This is cool! Hmmmm I still can't find it though...will wait for it to pop out??? LOL
It is pretty sneaky! And we still need to add more tips for pro Hubbers
Keep an eye out for it!
Nice work HP team! Thanks for the extra efforts to help make this the best site to write on.
Nicely done guys and gals - and, as sunforged suggested, a random Easter Egg might not go amiss
Hey, this is really cool! (Can I still say "cool" or am I dating myself here?)
Have finally see the tool tips. This is fantastic and thank you HubPage team! Works great for me as so many times I will forget to do something. This is a great way to remind me to write a summary.
Good to know that this is applied to older/current Hubs as well. Thank you! I hope to be a "Pro-Hubber" someday. One can only dream...
This is going to be a great feature, I look forward to it!
From the title alone I was kind of expecting a 'tip box' would be a virtual tip jar for us to get donations....
I discovered the tip box when I was editing a hub today. What a great idea! I think this box is going to be very useful.
Well, darn! When I read the headline, I thought "Great! They're giving us a widget where our readers can leave us a tip, like maybe from their Paypal account!" Oh well, nice addition anyhow.
I guess.
Just another variation of the gimmicks like suggest tags, title tuner, suggest links, etc., I guess.
Its tiring.
Lets roll back to the old HubPages, which was simple and effective.
Best Regards
Since I am a new hubber, I like the tip box. I haven't seen it pop up yet, but I really hope the jack-in-the-box low traffic one gets implemented. That would brighten up a low-traffic day, lol!
I like that idea, too, leah, since my traffic has seriously been tanking lately!
The tip box is awesome! I've seen it when I was writing a new hub and when I do some editing. Very helpful. Thank you Hubpages team!
