I have to agree with others. HP has been ripped off essentially. The entire site has been copied!!! YOU should do something. Using US to do the work for you is not acceptable.
HP will have more clout with Google and should be on top of this issue.
Sounds like WE are just being left "out in the cold!"

Where would anyone safely file a DMCA complaint against an Italian site? Wondering who is hosting it: Are they US-based and reputable?

NEW! January 19, 2012-- Released CGIProxy version 2.1.1, which includes many bugfixes since 2.1 .

I wrote some instant tutorials on CGI, HTML, and HTTP to get you up to speed fast. They're called CGI Made Really Easy, HTML Made Really Easy, and HTTP Made Really Easy. If you know what a text file is, you can be writing HTML within an hour. If you're a programmer, you can be writing CGI scripts within an hour. If you know sockets programming, you can understand HTTP within an hour.

The Web Tools section has various tools I've written to help with Web sites. So far, there's a CGI script that acts as an HTTP/FTP proxy (lets you access otherwise-inaccessible URLs), a DBM file editor, a multi-featured link-checker, and a Perl module that lets you pre-fill HTML form fields according to a hash you give it. Enjoy!

Check out the Election Simulator, an interactive Java applet that models an election of several candidates. Political positions are mapped into a plane rather than the traditional "right-wing, left-wing" line. In automatic mode, candidates alter their position to maximize their votes. Among other things, it demonstrates how a two-party system is fundamentally different from a three or more -party system, and how three or more parties allow change while two do not.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area and you like live music, ask my Live Music in the Bay Area database which bands are playing where on what nights, within how many miles of your address. (Currently, the data comes from Steve Koepke's "The List", which focuses on "funk-punk-thrash-ska", which may or may not be your cup of tea.)

    Have fun,
    James

This is the hosting company, it is here that the DMCA notice should be sent, HubPages can easily send a DMCA here and unless the hosting co are complete rogues, they will drop the site off inside a day normally.

    Interferenza S.r.l.
Via Caserta 3, San Nicola La Strada - 81020 CE
    Tel. 0823454016

I have been DMCA noticing companies who have ripped of websites I control frequently, if the host is legitimate, they act fast.

HubPages OWN the images that these folk are publishing, THEY CAN AND SHOULD ACT NOW, and equally so should we all individually.

Google will also take them off the engines if we complain, if only 10 of us complained, it will happen, if hundreds did, it would be faster.

Also Warner Brothers use their hosting (so they say)

    http://www.interferenza.net/images/logos_06.gif

If enough people contacted WB and suggested they review their hosting program with these guys..... they should take note and may persuade them to take down the counterfeiters.

It's always difficult to get the right people, but I would/will start here, you can be sure if they get a plethora of calls and emails, they will be sent to the right person, these guys understand protection of copyright!

If you attempted to login to that site. Change your HubPages password immediately.

You may also want to check to see if any affiliate accounts you have set up at HubPages have the right IDs. (AdSense pub-id and whatnot.)

Never ever login to a spoof (fake) site.

I had a friend who logged into a fake PayPal once (looked JUST like PayPal) and his entire bank account was drained. Fortunately, his bank replaced the money.

    I had my look around.

    1. Novello is a real and reputable company, so its very likely that they have been hacked or a web developer with access is playing around with their space.

so, the very, very easiest solution, is to contact Novello and give them a link that shows what is happening.

    Novello:

       Via Ca 'Marcello, 73
thirty thousand one hundred seventy-two Venezia-Mestre
        Phone 041-5311633
        Fax 041-5310125
    Hours:
    8:30 12:30
    14:45 18:15
    Saturday closed
        E-mail: novello@novellosrl.it
    to reach

    2. All this is, is a script that is serving Hubpages site via proxy in an iframe.

Ever use stumbleupon or any other site that has a header that follows you as you search around? Thats an iframe - a window within a window

    3. The ads arent "stripped" .. they just are set to appear at hubpages to com so are not being served to novello . No postal forward is in place.

    4. These pages are BEING indexed.

    5. Unfortunately, Hubpages staff must not have done any cursory research when alerted as you will clearly see that hubpages.com pages (not author posts) hubpages.com logos and hubpages.com style sheets and other protected hubpages.com property is being duplicated. So they do very much have the ability to act.

    6. This doesnt concern me in the least, the site is super slow, doesnt seem to have any malicious intent and should not be out ranking any hub content. Never a bad idea to change a password when these type of things happen, but my worry level would be very low

    7. Someone just send a friendly email (in italian) to novello - the problem will be fixed as quick as they can hire or fire a web developer

They have other sites being proxied and indexed - http://www.novellosrl.it/cgi-bin/nph-pn … 6q6s74652s

Wow, and I just sent my email...the more you know!! Thanks sunforged!

I did wonder about that, meaning the legitimacy of the company Novello. Initially, I didn't go to the site, but then my curiosity struck, and I looked at it.

I did notice that  the header on the site referenced a leader in pneumatics. I thought to myself, what does that have to do with hubbing, and online articles. What you wrote here makes absolute since to me...but so did the rest of it.

I think I'll just hold tight from here on out, and see how this plays out.

I am contacting the server owners as well, to advise them of the breach.

I want to reiterate what Melbel said - DO NOT LOG IN TO THAT SITE! Doing so may allow a middle man to do even more damage, as that site is in no way secure.

Sunforged, that was an excellent explanation! It really is pretty harmless and -unfortunately- happens often.

    Hello everyone,

This site is just proxying us. It has no real effect on us, and is something that is (sadly) done all the time. A site that proxies all of its content from us is unlikely to outrank the original content. I hope that people aren't trying to log into a strange site with a different URL - suffice it to say, DO NOT DO THAT.

The site is based in Italy, but we'll try to get the proxying to stop, since we are legally able to do so (we can't if they've just copied Hubs, the content of which we do not own).

I know the thought of someone just copying everything hits people and makes them angry at an emotional level (why shouldn't it?), but the thing to remember is that this doesn't pose any actual danger to HubPages, as several people in this thread have pointed out.

We do try to respond, but we are not in the Forums all the time.

The thing to keep in mind:

        - We definitely want to know immediately about site problems (things broken that prevent people from using the site). We do have systems set in place to detect errors and changes in traffic patterns, but please do report those just the same.

        - We can not do anything under the DMCA to report or shut down sites that copy Hubs, because we do not own that content, Hubbers do.

        - We do work to take down proxies, but the impact is negligible in the short- to medium-term, so Hubbers do not need to worry.

        - Never, ever log into a site pretending to be HubPages but with a different URL.

Proxy hacking? If this is the case, then this can be done with any site, correct?

And am I reading correctly that hubbers are protected by copyrights?

        1. profile image0
Website Examinerposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Protected in the sense that HubPages makes it clear that Hubbers retain copyright in their hubs. How to safeguard those rights is another matter.

  11. Simone Smith profile image83
    Simone Smithposted 12 years ago

Hey y'all! Yep, you got me.

First, yes, you're right- the proxy site does violate our copyright, and we are responsible for defending it (though please remember that since you own the content of your Hubs, you are the ones responsible for it, and need to file DMCAs in most cases when you've found that your content is stolen).

Second, what I hadn't realized before is the site is Italian, which means your sending over DMCA requests probably won't mean that much to them. My apologies for asking you to send those over.

As Jason says, we're working to have the site taken down or blocked. Please be patient. And PLEASE DO NOT THROW BRICKS AT ME!!! I'm delicate. wink

I believe there are some measures that could be taken by Hubpages to prevent this type of thing in regards to proxies.  It may affect people who want to legitimately use a proxy to access Hubpages but that might be a tradeoff worth considering.

I understand that HP doesn't own our copyrights, we own them. However, we posted our original work on this site in good faith, with the assumption the site was protecting itself (and therefore, content of contributors) from being hijacked in this manner.  I absolutely think HP needs to act (which it appears they've begun doing).

QUESTION - I tried to find the site just to see what was going on, and Google lists it as 'forbidden' currently.  Can any of our Hubbers who log in from foreign countries see whether it's still up elsewhere?  Probably a dumb question - I'm just wondering if the ban on the site is unique to US searches or if it's found its way throughout the entire Internet. Sorry if I sound very non-techie (I'm a writer, not an Internet expert).

No telling what other popular sites could have been hijacked, then.  MySpace, LinkedIn, you name it. The good news is that it won't just be our HP team going after them, it will be an army of sites. However, if it's happened once (to HP, FB, whatever), it's just a matter of time before it happens again.

I would venture to guess they are doing this in order to drive traffic to their site. They sell stuff. I think they are hoping people will make a search for these popular sites and end up on their site click a link at the top and shop their site as a result.

They are STILL tracking HP and HPs Facebook pages via interaction with FB. sad

So... watch and make sure that you don't fall for their Fake FB Sign In or account verifications!

I have Stripped out the relevant Cookies above from their Proxy management system, (from within) so they should now only reset if done manually or if loaded again via HP!

Their Proxy is Blocked... so they should no longer be viewing HP in real time (if at all now).

However they have a Phishing page up that relates to HubPages Facebook Site. I have gone around that and stripped out the HP Cookies (above)...
but it still is an indexed page and if ANYONE tries to Sign In to FB on this page.. their details will be captured..

Normally Google would put a warning up if they are aware of this.. I don't think they do yet. So as far as HP go... as a precaution.. I would suggest that maybe change your P/W here if you still concerned - and then biz as usual smile

It is Always Really Important to Act asap with these issues... you have to keep knocking them down regardless of internal politics here.. because sooner or later they will get the Don't Mess With Us message and think twice smile

So why isn't Hub Pages doing something to protect what we have written and how is this other site able to steal and or plagerize our work and get away with it?

  28. Marcy Goodfleisch profile image80
    Marcy Goodfleischposted 12 years ago

My guess is they're doing plenty behind the scenes - and probably not being specific about it in a public forum so they don't tip their hand. They would also want to make certain they know results before announcing anything. These are just guesses - but I've been very impressed at the responsiveness of site moderators, so I'd be surprised if they're not hard at work on things.

Exactly Mary! Based on the thread, and Jason's comment HubPages has leveraged itself and has had the site removed.

Dave, my impression is that Hubpages like any other site can not prevent anything like this from happening, but they can, as they have proved do something about it when it does.

It would be silly not to do anything as the entire site is at risk including HP content not just our hubs.
