Google tweaks its algorithm

Any sense at how Google's war against content farms will affect Hubpages?

    http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/2 … -sites/?hp

Obviously there is a huge difference between the quality of most hubs and answers.com or eHow.com.

I guess  it is quite early to know, given that even pages from content farms haven't fallen in ranking quite yet (again, according to this article).

Also, my sense is (after having attended a HubCamp) that Paul talks to Google with some regularity and that the tips we get as Hubbers help avoid the problem of Hubs being treated as part of content farm.

Any thoughts?  Or maybe this is a forum post in which Hubbers can complain or notify the rest of us about any noticeable drop in Google ranking because of the change in algorithm?

Some articles to day seem to think Hub pages is one of the five biggest losers so far from this change.

Having said that - what I see is confusing. Traffic is down but adsense revenue is holding steady.  Hubs that were on page one with Google are still in the same place or even higher.

I guess we just need to wait and let the dust settle.

I'd say the war against Hubpages is working well.

The returns I'm getting from Google are showing irrelevant sites for long tail keywords I targeted. I was on the 1st page and now the Hub page has disappeared, replaced by big retailers. Maybe the big boys are upset that niche market sites were exposing their shortcomings in marketing. Don't know why, though, because they were ultimately making more sales.

Looks like working with Google was a waste of time. I'm not entirely surprised.

Sorry, to be clear, it's not that I was unaware that there were already discussions about Google intermitant and annoying adjustments causes people to lose traffic, or Google's constant fights with black-hats with Hubbers as collateral damage.

My particular concern (and admittedly, I don't normally read the forums), was that this particular change would affect Hubpages more than other Google adjustments because, in theory, it is aimed at others sites that, at a high level of abstraction, are like Hubpages--at least in the abstract (although I think it is obviously uncharitable to group Hubpages with eHow, Answers.com, etc.)

Maybe my naivete, and relative inexperience, is in thinking that this particular change (or set of changes) is really any different in the grander scheme of things than ones in the past.  But I confess I don't spend time on the forums, I just didn't see this mentioned where I looked, and so I posted.

Anyway, more time publishing, less time putting my foot in it in the forums...  >sad

I don't think you put your foot in it. I think everyone might need to vent a little. You are absolutely right in that this change by Google could affect us very much compared to other changes they have made. Only time will tell.

Sorry, one other note.  This was maybe my second or third forum post ever, and I should have read the others before writing, you're right.  I did not check "latest forum posts," thinking that the forums were just topical, and I didn't look in the right places to see if this issue was already raised; I should have realized that this was heavily covered already (and I should have thought that it was going to be covered heavily, even before checking the forums).

As I've published little and lurked a lot on HubPages over the last year, I've looked up to people like sunforged and ryankett, and I feel kind of bad that my naive/ inattentive/ stupid question was met with sarcasm.  I suppose that is my problem, and I do understand your irritability at my question, given that it had been discussed ad nauseum, that HubPages is a big part of your livelihoods, and that this sudden change has been stressful (especially now having read what you and others have written about the change).  I just wish you had been a little gentler in your responses to someone who is still kind of a beginner at all of this.  But it's a free internet, until Google and Verizon convince the U.S> Congress to end net neutrality, so what can you do.

Sorry to burden you with my feelings on a (rainy where I am) day.  I came here for a bit of escape, to distract myself from a terrible week (a friend died yesterday, grandmother in hospital, etc.), and I was probably distracted when I posted.

Now I feel bad that I've made you feel bad...  sorry for that.  But it is true that I should have just paid a bit more attention to ongoing forum discussions before jumping in with a ham-handed question.  In any case, am curious to see what others say, and will follow some of the other discussions on this.

I feel bad that you feel bad about making sunforged feel bad about making you feel bad when you already felt bad about things that made you feel bad.

I am now going to drown my sorrows in the bottom of a pint, attempting to become an alcoholic--something that I've failed at for decades. I see others do it so easily, it just makes me feel so sad and bad.

I'll bet HP isn't feeling too good either!  I'm assuming they are taking the hits on earnings also.  But we aren't the ones letting crappy writers, who can barely speak English, put out massive low quality articles on the site.

There are some good writers here, but they are being penalized by
the admittance of incapable contributors.  Just like the other farms being slapped by Google.  Everyone should help clean up this mess if we can!  I'll try to flag more hubs this weekend.  Anyone else want to help?  You gotta be cruel on this one!

None of it makes me feel sad.  I've been hitting the booze since 9:00 a.m. Friday morning.   Oh just kidding - but I've been checking in on all these algorythm-change threads since then.  I do think I've noticed that as the workday ended (US/Eastern time), the panic threads seems to die down, and the Friday-night gender/relationships threads started showing up as usual.

Google has been trending away from marketing toward merchants and Google's own affiliate marketing efforts. It makes since that now that affiliate marketing datafeed sites have been pushed down that they'd adjust the system so that sites that are used for promotional pages also get reduced in ranking.
I'm not complaining though. Google has the right to do what it wants to. As long as users have a good experience they'll use it.
