David Sedaris is one of the few writers to send me into loud outburts of hysterical laughing. Very funny, witty man.

Mark Twain makes me laugh out loud.  He sets up a punch line way ahead of time and then knows how to deliver it.

Me too!  I was very distressed when he announced he had dementia.  Upset for him, of course, but also for me - no more Discworld sad

David Sedaris's writing is like a stand comedian talking to me. I'll chuckle for Mark Twain, but Sedaris can make me break out in a full laugh. jael

Larry McMurtry - Texasville and Some Can Whistle make me laugh - but then right away he makes me cry so does that cancel out the laughing, then?  I love the things he has people saying to each other.

ralwus just made me laugh by being jealous of Stan!  smile

so now we will turn this into another popularity contest thread - "Who is the funniest hubber"?  gag me with a spoon

DoorMattnomoreposted 13 years agoin reply to this

why not a silk scarf for gagging? A silver spon seems sooo gaggy...

to answer the real question, as far as hubpages goes, if I say HA HA HA  it means you made me laugh out loud. Y'all know who you are. For outside of HP..Dave Barry, Bill Watterson, Garrison Keillor, Gary Larson and Stephen King, to name a few.

From what I know about the policies here i figure anyone with the name "Adult Content" has the potential to make me laugh out loud . . . providing I get to read the hubs before he/she is banned just for that screenname--LOL

Gosh, there are so many really, really witty people here on HP.
    Shadesbreath is hilarious (and brilliant).
Christoph Reilly can spin a tale like nobody's business -- haven't seen him on here in awhile, tho.
    Mistyhorizon is another one.
I always laugh at Ron Montgomery's forum posts.
I could go on and on and on, but my brain hurts and I'm getting sleepy.

As for non-HP writers,Dave Barry is LOL funny!

I will add Dave Barry to my list too because I know once or twice he has made me laugh out loud.
      Super reminder, girl.

I laugh super hard when I see foreign speaking people attempt to become english-speaking freelance writers. The bad grammar, the awkward syntax.. all of it. It brings tears of laughter to my eyes.

Sometimes I want to say "You type with an accent, and your grammar is horrid".

but Im not an editor so I digress.

I really hope this doesnt come across rude. But whenever I see someone non english writeng in English, I think  "geeze..I wish I knew another lanugage. That must be so hard!!" Mangeled as thier English might be, its better then anything I could ever do in a foriegn language.

CkhoffmanKposted 13 years agoin reply to this

linguistics are only as hard as the person using them makes them out to be.

Im just saying it's hilarious to see someone *think* they have the grammar and syntax down enough to try to bid on paying writing jobs. I.e. Elance crowd. Even funnier when someone actually contracts them to write and they end up with unpublishable blither that looks like a 10 yr old wrote it.

PoeticLicenseposted 13 years agoin reply to this

          I agree.
While I have met people from other countries who speak mangled English better than i can speak most of their languages I also find it funny when someone oversteps themselves.
I think we all need to know and acknowledge our limits sometimes.
Naturally, when someone doesn't--it CAN be very funny!

exactly! the humor isn't in the fact they they are trying, the humor is found in the fact that they think they can do things that they can't. For example, when I was working for a content company as a "gatekeeper" (not an editor, just someone that trashed things that werent worth looking over) I got a lot of articles that were just so poorly done. It's like seeing someone who weighs 300 lbs try to stuff themselves into a bikini.

John Steinbeck's book "Sweet Thursday" did so with me (though I read it fifty years back)  Also, Jerome K Jerome's Three Men in a Boat.

I think it really takes a great deal of skill to write in such a way that the reader is in stitches with laughter.   Nowadays, it all seems so serious.

Alexander Mccall Smith and Kate Atkinson...in both cases it's more a knowing chuckle than a roaring belly laugh; although just as satisfying!  I had to really think about this one which has led me to the conclusion that I need to read some more 'funny' novels.
