Does this sound like discrimination to you?

I recently got a job working for a temp service, and I have been going to a production factory every day to get work, only every time I go, the person assigned to dishing out the jobs never picks a white or black person to work. All of the Mexicans and the Chinese always get work, and everyone else gets sent home. The person dishing out the jobs is also Mexican, and when she makes her selections she speaks spanish, and, usually has a Chinese person who talks for the Chinese, who all seem to come to the factory together on a bus, even though we are all only temps.

I have only worked 1 day in 2 weeks, and I have a feeling I was lucky that day, because the person handing out the jobs was a white girl. But, She just took whomever was first in line, and didn't overlook anyone. I should point out that this factory has a large population of Spanish employees and supervisors. So, I'm guessing not only are our jobs going down to Mexico, they are also hiring mostly Mexicans in the States too.

The Work is sometimes hard, and only pays $8.00 an hour. But, it sure hurts to be the only white guy in the group who constantly gets shot down. I should mention that a lot of the white people I have met there are from Bosnia. There are very few white people there, and the ones that are working are in management.

    Just curious what everyone thinks.

I think you should sign up with another temp service or spend more time searching for a permanent position.

I am sorry you are experiencing this.  It does sound like racism. If you plan to make a complaint to employment commission, keep records of dates and if only a certain race got work.  If only certain races were hired keep a record of that as well.  Racism is difficult to prove, but if you have proof, even if nothing changes you can cause them to be investigated.  Good luck.  Racism is never right!

That's good advice. Facts are essential.

I would try another service.  Perhaps whoever is requesting temps is asking for a specific group of workers.

I would think there's a more equitable way to hand out the jobs.

If they are looking for certain workers, wouldn't it make sense for them to not send me, or any of the black men and women who are being ignored? I don't think the temp service is the problem. It seems to me that they just send bodies, and don't care what the outcome is. Probably get a kickback from their corporate headquarters for body quotas. I know all about that.

The method of hiring workers, by getting everyone to go there first and then choosing, is by nature an abuse.  In this system the fact that the Foreman chooses their own race, type or gender is also normal, that somebody is paying the Foreman to choose from 'their' group is also normal.  It is also quite possible that there is a secret system where the 'chosen' hand over a fee to the Foreman for choosing them, a levy on getting the job.

It could also be that they have "Quotas" to meet. Pick so many of this race, that race, that gender, which usually leaves out the english speaking white guy. I notice that there are also a lot of people from Bosnia working there. I know a little about tax credits for hiring minorities and displaced families, as our company hired a lot of people who came here from Bosnia...(To get the kickback from Uncle sam) Like Obama's $5,000.00 tax credit given to employers to hire more workers. You can bet that will be quota oriented.

I don't think the Foreman's are taking bribes, as they do not know the people they are selecting to work. They just seem to mainly pick people who are the same race. This particular factory has a lot of mexican and Chinese workers, and only a handful of white employees who are not in upper management. But, you can guess that most of the upper management, and the guys who come in the suits are white.

It would be quite illegal for a company to request a specific race from a temp agency, and just illegal for the agency to honor that request.

I suppose that a company could be requesting the same people they have used before - we do that if we are happy with the temp.  It seems unlikely in this case, however.

From your description of the races used when the white girl worked I would suspect the temp agency management isn't aware of what is happening and it should be brought to their attention.  With a little documentation and corroborating stories it sounds like a lawsuit in the making.

Yes, that sure sounds like discrimination to me. Someone will be getting a bribe somewhere as others have suggested.

Yes, it is indeed discriminatory.    You should file a complaint with a civil rights agency.    Job discrimination is totally illegal in this country.
