I was travelling recently and I was surprised at all the crap that people travel with. People had huge bags, pillows, tablets, food, etc. Then it takes so long for them to put their stuff away. When did flying become so high maintenance?
I agree its quite annoying that people even consider packing and carrying irrelevant items while travelling. And those people who have bulky handcarries! i wonder do they realise what a handcarry means??? Though the airline authorities try coping with the excessive luggage issue by limiting on weight factors but for many passengers its just all futile!
What difference does it matter to YOU what other people take on travel? WOW!
It matters a lot, on a long distance flight.
They rush to get to the plane first, fill up all the lockers with their cr@p, so when I arrive, there's nowhere for my stuff to go. So I spend the next 24 hours with my carry-on bag under the seat in front and my handbag and coat on my lap.
Mind you, it's worse when it's food and pillows rather than just gifts and excess baggage - because they keep those in the seat with them. I once sat next to a woman who had a big pillow, a spare cardigan, a big bag of food and four books. She had so much stuff under her seat, she had to splay her feet out either side (invading my foot space). The pillow kept hitting me in the face, and every time she needed something from the bag, she bent over and starting rummaging, elbows flying all over the place. I was over it in the first 4 hours, never mind the next 20.
Actually, it's not a big deal for me to have my bag under the seat in front - I have short legs so I can use it as footrest. But it must be hell for the longer-legged.
If you travel on a UK economy flight - it is one bag for cabin luggage and everything has to go inside that; handbag, laptop, camera. If you are lucky sometimes they will also let you carry on the book you are reading on the flight.
Randomly they will weigh bags at the boarding gate or check to see if it fits into the dimensions that they set, if it is too big then you have to pay extra for it to go in the hold.
I was once forced to empty the small front pocket on my cabin bag to make it fit into the dimensions of the cage they use to check the size.
Its got a lot better in recent years from what I've seen. The airlines have cut down on what's acceptable to be brought on. I now try to travel carry on only if going long haul and have bee pleasently surprised to find that its actually quite easy to find space for your bag though sometimes not exactly over your head !
Yes, most airlines have become much stricter about what you can take on. The only one I've had trouble with recently was Olympus airlines from Athens to Cairo.
I was amazed to see people walking up to the checkout counter with their luggage and one carry-on bag, then once they'd checked in, walking back around the corner where their trolley full of shopping bags was waiting.
I was sure they'd get stopped at security or at the gate for having all those extra bags, but no. Clearly, the staff at both places felt it wasn't their job. Boarding was absolute pandemonium!
On long haul flights I do take snacks because I usually don't like what the airlines offer in food but I have seen people go overboard with what they bring on. Although try flying from Australia to anywhere, it's a loooooooonnnnnnggggg flight.
I almost had a wheelie bag drop on me because the woman couldn't lift her bag without a lot of effort to reach the overhead bin. Too many people are cheap and don't want to check bags. And I'm talking domestic flying. I can see why Spirit is charging more for carry-on bags.
I get annoyed on long flights 8 hrs+ where they have to go in the overhead bin every hour. I understand people have to get-up and stretch but going in and out of the bin 5+ times is downright annoying. You know the person I am talking about and it isn't even the one with a baby.
It makes a difference to me because it slows boarding and delayed take-off. Half the time they have to delay to check excess carry in bags and we miss out departure slot, then miss our assigned arrival gate--adding an hour or more to my schedule. I also suspect many planes are carry weight in a way that doesn't quite match the safety calculations.
But that's what happens when you charge money for checked bags.
Doesnt matter what or how much other passengers bring into the flights as long as they lock it up and put it away till the plane lands. What gets annoying is when they keep "fidgeting" with the baggage every now and then!
