Anyone experiencing a drop in traffic equivalent to weekend lows?

My traffic just dropped by about 33% similar to like on weekends. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. Some of my hubs that normally give me 100+ views during the week have dropped to way below 100 like on the weekend. Anyone experiencing this?

Yes Cardisa, and its very very discouraging.  When stuff like that happens, its hard to feel motivated as if one can never get ahead for a lot of hard work put in.

There is this idea, that if you keep doing more of the same with writing hubs, that the more you do, the more you will make.  With dips like this, that seem to be sticking around, more work can mean less benefit over time.  Speaking of the monetary benefits of writing in this case.

I certainly do get a drop on the weekends, but during the week it's back up again thankfully. I don't know - people go out on the weekends, or they're too hungover to read anything.

I do hope that the extra drop in traffic is a result of the weekend. That's why I am waiting to see what happens Monday through Tuesday.

Well, I think it probably is, because I've had the same trend in traffic for some time. Nothing to worry about, and little we can really do either. smile

My hard drive got wiped out and had to reinstall the OS So was away for two days. Those two days were my best in terms of traffic i wonder how high it reached. Both were my highest that's for sure. Made the most $'s too more than double of my previous highs which were quite decent themselves. Weekend traffic is low but still it's higher than last weeks normal traffic.

I know HP was "working on the system" this past Sunday.  A phrase that always strikes terror in my soul.  Every time they "work on something" - either to fix, change, or add a new feature - a whole lot of other features don't work right for dats (if at all).  So this is probably yet another example of souping up one aspect of the site causing problems in another. For all we know, the traffic monitoring section got turned off accidentally and we're only getting a few numbers from who-knows-how-long-ago. The rest are stuck in the chute somewhere.

If there's one thing learns at HP, it's PATIENCE. sad

I lost 40-50% of my traffic overnight! I have been following a consistent traffic trend for months. Checked today, and I lost nearly half my traffic!

I really hope this is not permanent.

Can anyone enlighten me on how Algorithms work? If someone loses traffc, does that mean they have done something wrong or is it just that the search engines get mixed around for a while?

PaulGoodman67posted 12 years agoin reply to this

I think either, or a combination of both can be true!

Does a drop in traffic solely depend on a drop in search engine rankings or are there are reasons?

I checked some of my hubs. I believe some have lost ranks, but some seem to be declining even though I believe the rank is the same.

        1. PaulGoodman67 profile image96
PaulGoodman67posted 12 years agoin reply to this

Ranks affects search engine traffic directly.  But obviously if search engine traffic is down and less people are coming to your site, that might affect people clicking on links and therefore affect other types of traffic indirectly.

    2. Cardisa profile image87
Cardisaposted 12 years agoin reply to this

I just read the article. The update was the long anticipated anti-spam update rolled out by Google. They did mention in the article that some innocents would be affected during the changes.

      Cutts quoted:
There are lots of theories floating around at the moment about what types of sites took the biggest hits, but it seems a bit premature to make conclusions with so many conflicting reports. It seems a few “innocents” may have be caught up in this (though, honestly, it’s easy to blame Google for not ranking your site), and some pages that shouldn’t be ranking are now, according to various reports in forums since last night.

Some are arguing that Google’s results are worse now. If that sounds familiar, many people were saying the same thing after Panda launched last year. Pretty sure those who saw their search rankings increase aren’t complaining.

      1. David 470 profile image81
David 470posted 12 years agoin reply to this

If they say "innocents" are being affected, I hope that means they will only be affected temporarily.

I'd like to think that I have offered some good hubs and do not over use keywords.

So Google essentially wants to get rid of people who copy and past posts all over the internet because they are trying to promote their website or business?

        1. Cardisa profile image87
Cardisaposted 12 years agoin reply to this

As far as I can tell, they want to get rid of anything that is not original and high quality.

I think the "innocents" will not suffer long. The fact that we haven't lost all the traffic or most of it could be a good sign. I would keep an eye on the traffic for the next couple days before worrying too much. I have no over stuffed keyword hubs or overlinked ones either.

          1. David 470 profile image81
David 470posted 12 years agoin reply to this

I definitely do not overlink, in fact, I don't backlink at all anymore. If I have any links, it is from people viewing my content and posting links somewhere.

            Spammers are ruining everything.

While I do not understand how Google algs work exactly, I would imagine that the search engine results pages will be screwed up a while, even for innocent websites that have original content etc...

I think it's best to *not* take any drastic action for a week and see what happens.  In fact, I'm not planning to take any action at all over that period.  If the problems persist, then is the time to look for fixes. HP might also give out some guidelines once they know what's happening.  I would caution against panicking and radically changing hubs that have traditonally done well.  That's my view.

I agree with you Paul. I am not changing anything. My best hub was written long before I knew anything about keywords..... The second best one is a recipe and the third is humour so I don't think there is anything to worry about...on my part...because they don't fall into the category of spam, overstuffed keywords or anything like that. So I am definitely not panicking.

My HP traffic dipped and then recovered. One of my websites has lost about 30% of its traffic but that has nothing but "real" backlinks and is full of quality stuff (Even if I do say so myself..lol). Most of the keywords that were ranking have dropped a few places although some have risen; just a pity that the ones that dropped were the higher traffic ones!
A new website that has only had content for a month and was seeing some traffic has completely lost all of its traffic, so will be interesting to see if that picks back up and how well.

Previous updates have taken a few days or weeks to settle so I think too early to really know where things will end up... not going to panic just yet...

Keywords and links don't matter much any more. A few weeks ago a I read a release where Google stated that SEO will soon be a thing of the past. It is suggested to ue keywords in the URL and Title and just write your article normally without any form of strategically places keywords.

Just went and checked my old AC/Yahoo! account for the heck of it.  I only have 18 articles there and they are pulling in twice the number of views than my entire portfolio here on HP for the last week.  18 versus 112.  Twice the page views on 18 articles.  lol

I once had about 50 or so articles there and moved them off because they were duplicates from Helium and I did not wish to have any on the net.  Strange because one of my best hubs has dropped in traffic while a similar--but far less detailed and depicted article--on AC/Yahoo! has gained over 2500 views in the last couple of days with other articles there doing well also.

I seldom even check there anymore so it was quite a surprise for me to see such crazy stuff going on.  It makes me just want to throw up my hands, and then just throw up period!  sad

Similar for me, although I think my drop has stabilized and the fall today is just the normal weekend cycle.  This is the biggest hit since the drop for many (most?) of us straight after the switch to subdomains.  I recovered from that one within a week.  Fingers crossed the same will happen this time.  Can only hope at the moment.

The fall in earnings seems even bigger than the fall in traffic.

My traffic is maintaining now it appears. But it dropped about 1500-2000 HP impressions, which is a pretty significant difference.

The thing is, my traffic is actually higher on weekends by about 20%.

I really hope I recover and anyone else who is experiencing a loss. I spent a lot of time on content and seen my share of successful hubs, semi-successful, failures etc...

I enjoy writing on here, athough, it's hard to make every hub very successful (in terms of a lot of traffic and consistent traffic).

Google may be trying to punish spammers (which is good), but they are hurting a lot of people that put out original content and are just trying to provide information to the readers.

I checked my best hub and saw that I lost traffic from some foreign countries like google.ca, google.nl, google.de and a few more. Those place gave me about 50% of my traffic put together. I still have google.com and a few others. When I logged in this morning the hub was getting 43 hits and now it's up to 55.

I guess the only thing that you can do is wait. One of my hubs used to get me around 60 views a day that was about 3 months back; but, it fell down to around 7-10 each day and now gets me around 20 sad Didn't know Elance could be seasonal as I still hold the top spot for various search terms.

But, all my other hubs are picking up and faring much better than that ever did. Since they're relatively new I guess they need time to age.

It surely is at least for me as that's the biggest source of traffic. The other countries are a real fluctuation I feel. One day UK and Canada give me X views and the next India and Pak Combined give me the same number keeping things somewhat constant
