"Others you might like …"

   Hi
   
   I have just changed to the new profile format and I'm fairly happy with it so far. However, I'm a bit bemused by the 'others you might like …' section.
   
   I am generally agnostic, and do not believe in Biblical religion. A number of my hubs reflect this. I also write about evolution versus creationism ~ in favour of the former.
   
   So I really do not think that readers, who enjoy my work, 'might like' any of the Hubbers suggested ~ all staunchly Christian.
   
   How are these choices made?
   Randomly, I imagine, because they don't make a lot of sense.
   Will things become more logical, as time goes by?

      There is an option to have three people not show up there of your choosing, but only three.
      
      "Others You Might Like" Blacklist
      You can add up to 3 usernames to a blacklist. Users on the blacklist are not going to be displayed in the Others You May Like Box.

         Would it not be more beneficial to have the opportunity to choose three hubbers that will show up on your profile instead of blacklisting three?

         Yes, I know about the blacklist, but these people aren't 'blacklisted' by me; they are just very different from me, so don't seem to 'fit'

   I think it probably works on some very crude keyword analysis.
   
   I find it disturbing that this feature gives the impression we are endorsing authors, who maybe
   (a) are people about whom we know nothing
   (b) write poor-quality hubs
   (c) support viewpoints that we find offensive.
   
   There appears to be no vehicle to enable even a minimum level of control over who/what is featured.

   Could it be that the "others you might like" are based on mutual followers? I noticed that all of the hubbers listed on my profile have at least 3 mutual followers.
   
   I agree that we should be able to choose which other hubbers are listed on our profiles.

      I'm going to say it's not based on that because I'm following almost nobody and frequently you can see three recommended people on my profile who have zero mutual followers.

   Is it not just based on a straightforward syntax analysis of the keywords in your content so it is offering others randomly based on a random analysis, hence the randomness. Obviously one would like to delete the bible thumpers but that level of granular control may come in time as a matter of evolution (of the site)  ;-)

   I think this list is created based on the number of mutual followers. But it is unfortunate that we can not disable this option at least.

   It makes the page look more like a social network page. Twitter offers a similar looking feature.
   
   The appearance of that type of feature on the new profile page may not be an accidental coincidence but an indication.

   One of the reasons why I have not moved to the new profile.  I find it very strange to have a 3-person blacklist when it looks like the choices for "The Others" are already made for you.  I am taking my sweet time on this one because if you really want to know, I dread seeing what Hubbers are going to be listed on my new profile.

      It'd be a lot more honest if HP titled that panel, "While you're here, we'd like to hold you as long as possible, make as much as we can from you, so hey, why not see if any of these Hubbers do it for you. Or the ones we'll refer you to after you select one of these. Or the ones after that..We'll make money wherever  you go onsite, just as long as you don't go away" (longform, lol).
      
      As it stands, there's a clear implication to a visitor that there's a similarity between the Hubber whose page they're on, and the ones being offered. But there's no basis that adds value to the reader experience; not content, not niche, not writing style, not hub standard. It's a crap shoot.
      
      Worse, I find it unreasonable that HP is so blatant about hustling readers away from my work. I invite people to browse my portfolio in the opening words of my profile, and I'd like HP to leave them to do so, if they wish. That's my revenue you're playing with, HP. And it's little enough as it is.
