Hi. I have left my Hubpages account idle for a little while and now that the children are back to school,I want to get started again. However my problem is that I am finding it very difficult to come up with topics that have not been well written about already.  I would love to hear how you get inspired/get your focus back when you are having a writing block.  Thank you

Hi mathair, sometimes it helped me go through the answer section of HP and find some questions that I would enjoy answering with a hub.
The weekly topic inspiration are great too.
Other times I just write about things triggered by what I do every day. That's how I got started with recipe hubs, for example.
      Good luck. smile

I am finding that more and more I simply write about something that gets my attention during the course of the day.  Seldom do I really dwell on what to write about. When something "hits" me, I check it out and see what I can come up with. smile

Not much actually !  I am very observant though, and I see real life situations that make me think : "Oh that would be good to use in a story" and sometimes that's all it takes to get me started. Once I get the general idea, it's easy to follow the thread and make a short story out of it. I like to stick to short stories because I don't have the patience to write anything longer, and the physical process of writing is not very enjoyable to me, because ideas come to mind much faster than I can write them down and I get frustrated. I guess in the end I lack discipline, and since I don't write for a living, that's fine by me. Thank you for a great hub though, as I'm always interested in knowing how other people came to writing and what makes them click

Think about what interests you, what YOU would want to read about and then go from there. Put your own spin on something that gets your mind going. Just because something has been written about before doesn't mean its been written as you would do it. Your take on something may be just what a reader is looking for.

Thank you to everyone for your replies. I left the computer aside today and simply used a pen and paper to jot down thoughts and ideas.  Hopefully this will help me to kick-start the writing again!

Just before I joined Hubpages I saw a suggestion from someone about how to think up blog topics. Really, I thought it was so simple and brain dead that it couldn't work but I tried it anyway. The suggestion is to just sit down with pen and paper and write 100 topics within about 10 to 15 minutes. You are not allowed to dwell on any topic or judge it, just keep going. Well, actually it took me nearly an hour and I ended up with 57 topics.

Of those I thought about half had some promise. Then I filter them by trying different keywords in Google to make sure the topics aren't overly saturated already. If you type in your topic several ways and it pulls up 20 million hits, then probably you need to narrow it or just forget about that one.

Anyway, it's just a brainstorming technique and it seems to have worked as I have a list of about 20 hubs I could do, and of course, as the week goes by I always think of a few more spontaneously.

    Hope that helps!

Why not write about who's staring at you in the mirror every day. I mean you. Write about what you're so frustrated about. Write about not being able to write. Write about your family and everything around you at home. I bet there's more than one or two stories there. Good luck!!
