We should hear the announcement this evening.  Former president Andrew Jackson will be relegated to the flip side of the $20, replaced on the front by the image of Harriet Tubman.  Additionally, the $5 bill will be changed to depict civil rights era leaders.  What do you think about these changes?

I think it's time for a woman to be represented on our currency, after all we are half of the work force, and we sure do like to spend money. Ha..

I'm fine with it.  As long as they did not touch Alexander Hamilton on the $10, I was good.  I thought it was going to be Eleanor Roosevelt.  Don't know why.   Harriet Tubman was a surprise.  But it makes sense.

It does not make much difference, I would bet that most people could not tell you who is on any of the bills, and I don't have a $20 bill long enough to see who is on it.

Why is it necessary to make a change on our currency?  It's not supposed to be a status symbol or tool for social change - it's a symbol of capitalism and solvency of a nation.  Waste of time.

Must you be so conservative about everything?

Why is it necessary to keep the currency the same?

It just another of those subconscious reminders that the only people that matter in American History worthy to have his image on our currency are white males.

So, I beg to differ, a little change is not going hurt anyone, after all the money still spends.

If you don't like the look of the new 20's, I will be glad to take them off from your hands!!

Changing the look of currency now and then is one among many anti-counterfeiting measures.  Usually the changes are minor, but there's no reason why they can't put a new face on it every time.  At least it would provide more work for artists.

Of all the current figures who could be replaced on US paper currency, the most dispensable to me is George Washington.  He was not particularly brilliant or brave and was the antithesis of a self-made man (or woman).  Much of his success can be attributed to luck. There's already a whole state and capital district named after him, as well as the quarter -- the cornerstone of laudromat and vending machine operations.  I don't think he needs the $1 bill on top of all that. How about an important American artist or inventor? Alexander Graham Bell is a non-controversial choice.

Political and military figures are over-represented on currency.  A country is more than just political acts and battles.  I favor commemorating more artists, writers, and scientists, as other countries do.  I'm not opposed to entertainers and athletes, but I know those would be much more controversial.

As financial transactions are increasingly electronic and paper currency is used less and less, the proposed changes are insignificant.  It would have had more of an impact to put Tubman on the currency in the 1960s.

Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish-born scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator who is credited with patenting the first practical telephone. Wikipedia

Why has America become so jaded  , so imbecilic,  so politically correct about everything except common sense ........ ?

I did not suggest to tear down Washington monument, erase his head from Mt. Rushmore, take him off the quarter, rename Washington state and the capital district.  I suggested to put someone else on the $1 bill.

I think having been a slaveholder should disqualify someone from being on the money nowadays, especially when the US history is long enough to find enough people who did not own slaves who made important contributions to society.  You can call me a pinko commie PC hippy dippy liberal fruitcake all you want, this is after all just a forum for our irrelevant opinions.

The thing is that you can't seem to understand is that it's OK to judge people on what they do rather than on their race or political or religious affiliations. It's not like she fights to suppress people's human rights, to make her religion law, to make sure people don't have to be sane to own guns, or to gut textbooks of science content like modern republicans do. She didn't use politics and rhetoric to hurt people or to whip up racism or religious bigotry.

She did incredible things and was an amazing woman.

It's amazing that you can extrapolate so much, in such detail, in such a partisan way based upon an internet meme and a historical figure.  How would you define rhetoric?

                1. Kylyssa profile image90
Kylyssaposted 7 years agoin reply to this

How is it partisan to judge a person on what they do rather than on their race, religion, or political party? You made it partisan by acting like people now dislike people for being Republicans, Christians, or gun owners because of their affiliations and what they own rather than because they are doing things upsetting or harmful to others. Why would we dislike Harriet Tubman if she wasn't doing anything objectionable and claiming it was part of her religion?

You stated what you wrote as if people should care that she was a Christian Republican who used guns rather than caring about what kind of human being she was or what she did. I've felt she was an amazing human being from the first time I encountered her in a history book decades ago. Girls notice things like intelligent badass women fighting against enormously powerful enemies on a side they can see is clearly in the right in their history books at school. You should probably make some effort to learn about her before you bash the idea of a freaking HERO's image being put on money.

What I posted was a current internet meme.  The gist of it and I may not remember it exactly, was along the lines of " the awkward silence when liberals realize Tubman was a pro gun republican etc."   I suspect that to a republican its a jab at liberals who in " their" estimation like to get on their soapboxes and claim they are on some moral high road and suggest everyone that ain't liberal is bigoted etc etc while making their emotionally charged sweeping generalizations about whole groups themselves. Now for you to say I am quote bashing some hero is shown to be completely false and unsubstantiated. Would you like to know how I actually feel about Tubman being on the 20$, since you only think you know?

PhoenixV's original comment was a tongue-in-cheek joke that you are taking literally.

I know you have said before on the forum that due to your ASD you have trouble telling when people are being serious or joking, so before you write long-winded angry responses to people you should assess if the comment is serious or a joke.  If you can't tell, then just ask, or don't reply at all.  Assuming all comments are serious and replying as such is not a good way to go about things.

With people like Andrew Jackson on money already it's silly to freak out over anybody they choose. You think he was  superior to Harriet Tubman? Was it his lust for genocide and near success at it, his paying for hundreds of people to be kidnapped and forced to work for him, or his fierce fighting to criminalize talking about abolition that you love so much? Or was it the way he picked duels with men who said things he didn't like and killed them? If such a criminal warlord lived today in another country, we'd send out drones to kill him for the safety of humanity.

You think Andrew Jackson was a being superior to Harriet Tubman and you class her with pedophiles. You've said as much where all the world can see it. Your life would be so much better if you let go of your hate and learned that murder, slave-holding, and genocide are evil and being black and female are not.
