We should hear the announcement this evening. Former president Andrew Jackson will be relegated to the flip side of the $20, replaced on the front by the image of Harriet Tubman. Additionally, the $5 bill will be changed to depict civil rights era leaders. What do you think about these changes?
I think it's time for a woman to be represented on our currency, after all we are half of the work force, and we sure do like to spend money. Ha..
What's six inches long, has a head on it, and drives women wild? A thousand dollar bill! Let's put a woman on that one! Lol!
I'm fine with it. As long as they did not touch Alexander Hamilton on the $10, I was good. I thought it was going to be Eleanor Roosevelt. Don't know why. Harriet Tubman was a surprise. But it makes sense.
It does not make much difference, I would bet that most people could not tell you who is on any of the bills, and I don't have a $20 bill long enough to see who is on it.
Why is it necessary to make a change on our currency? It's not supposed to be a status symbol or tool for social change - it's a symbol of capitalism and solvency of a nation. Waste of time.
Must you be so conservative about everything?
Why is it necessary to keep the currency the same?
It just another of those subconscious reminders that the only people that matter in American History worthy to have his image on our currency are white males.
So, I beg to differ, a little change is not going hurt anyone, after all the money still spends.
If you don't like the look of the new 20's, I will be glad to take them off from your hands!!
I'm just saying that we have bigger fish to fry than something as trivial as this - I never get to see $20's anymore between the wife and kids... Ha ha joke
Changing the look of currency now and then is one among many anti-counterfeiting measures. Usually the changes are minor, but there's no reason why they can't put a new face on it every time. At least it would provide more work for artists.
I think every news agency in the U.S. sends me breaking news alerts. I knew a couple of hours ago.
Now that the decision has been made, I was just wondering how happy people are with it. Thanks to everyone for answering and I hope more hubbers will share their thoughts.
Of all the current figures who could be replaced on US paper currency, the most dispensable to me is George Washington. He was not particularly brilliant or brave and was the antithesis of a self-made man (or woman). Much of his success can be attributed to luck. There's already a whole state and capital district named after him, as well as the quarter -- the cornerstone of laudromat and vending machine operations. I don't think he needs the $1 bill on top of all that. How about an important American artist or inventor? Alexander Graham Bell is a non-controversial choice.
You obviously don't believe in George Washington being the father of the United States. Have you read about Washington's contributions during the Revolutionary War and the early years of the country?
He is over rated like most of our past "heroes".
Sorry you feel that way, maybe you'd rather the British won the war, eh bloke?
We are standing in the way of progress when we should already be getting change for an undocumented british subject like Ben Arnold on our c notes. I'd love to see MLK on a new silver dollar, but landing a Man on the moon and foiling counterfeiters is 2 different things. ,
Political and military figures are over-represented on currency. A country is more than just political acts and battles. I favor commemorating more artists, writers, and scientists, as other countries do. I'm not opposed to entertainers and athletes, but I know those would be much more controversial.
As financial transactions are increasingly electronic and paper currency is used less and less, the proposed changes are insignificant. It would have had more of an impact to put Tubman on the currency in the 1960s.
Might upset the Scots. Or the Canadians.
Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish-born scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator who is credited with patenting the first practical telephone. Wikipedia
Born: March 3, 1847, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Died: August 2, 1922, Beinn Bhreagh, Nova Scotia, Canada
Sort of Scottish Canadian.
Since when was he American? He didn't move to America till he was in his mid-twenties.
Moronic ,This is about the dumbest idea I've ever heard , It's the idea that we should tear down monuments to the greatest humans ever , I sure wish Americans would bone up on a history lesson or two , Yea ,lets tear George Washington's monument down and put one up of Dennis Rodman , how about the Lincoln memorial , we could put one up of Millie Vanilli , and then there's that ugly Susan B Anthony , why not Lady Ga Ga , hey I know .... tear down Ronald Reagans and put one up of Catlyn Jenner , or maybe Justin Bieber ,
Why has America become so jaded , so imbecilic, so politically correct about everything except common sense ........ ?
Hey , Lets put Fidel Castro on our American flag !
I did not suggest to tear down Washington monument, erase his head from Mt. Rushmore, take him off the quarter, rename Washington state and the capital district. I suggested to put someone else on the $1 bill.
I think having been a slaveholder should disqualify someone from being on the money nowadays, especially when the US history is long enough to find enough people who did not own slaves who made important contributions to society. You can call me a pinko commie PC hippy dippy liberal fruitcake all you want, this is after all just a forum for our irrelevant opinions.

Wasn't Tubman a pro gun toting republican christian that hated democrats?
She could not have been a republican - neither blacks nor women could vote in those days.
She hated slave-holders like Andrew Jackson, especially when they used their political power to criminalize attempts to end slavery.
The thing is that you can't seem to understand is that it's OK to judge people on what they do rather than on their race or political or religious affiliations. It's not like she fights to suppress people's human rights, to make her religion law, to make sure people don't have to be sane to own guns, or to gut textbooks of science content like modern republicans do. She didn't use politics and rhetoric to hurt people or to whip up racism or religious bigotry.
She did incredible things and was an amazing woman.
It's amazing that you can extrapolate so much, in such detail, in such a partisan way based upon an internet meme and a historical figure. How would you define rhetoric?
How is it partisan to judge a person on what they do rather than on their race, religion, or political party? You made it partisan by acting like people now dislike people for being Republicans, Christians, or gun owners because of their affiliations and what they own rather than because they are doing things upsetting or harmful to others. Why would we dislike Harriet Tubman if she wasn't doing anything objectionable and claiming it was part of her religion?
You stated what you wrote as if people should care that she was a Christian Republican who used guns rather than caring about what kind of human being she was or what she did. I've felt she was an amazing human being from the first time I encountered her in a history book decades ago. Girls notice things like intelligent badass women fighting against enormously powerful enemies on a side they can see is clearly in the right in their history books at school. You should probably make some effort to learn about her before you bash the idea of a freaking HERO's image being put on money.
BTW, President Lincoln, who ended slavery, was a Republican.
What I posted was a current internet meme. The gist of it and I may not remember it exactly, was along the lines of " the awkward silence when liberals realize Tubman was a pro gun republican etc." I suspect that to a republican its a jab at liberals who in " their" estimation like to get on their soapboxes and claim they are on some moral high road and suggest everyone that ain't liberal is bigoted etc etc while making their emotionally charged sweeping generalizations about whole groups themselves. Now for you to say I am quote bashing some hero is shown to be completely false and unsubstantiated. Would you like to know how I actually feel about Tubman being on the 20$, since you only think you know?
Kylyssa,
PhoenixV's original comment was a tongue-in-cheek joke that you are taking literally.
I know you have said before on the forum that due to your ASD you have trouble telling when people are being serious or joking, so before you write long-winded angry responses to people you should assess if the comment is serious or a joke. If you can't tell, then just ask, or don't reply at all. Assuming all comments are serious and replying as such is not a good way to go about things.
Very considerate of you to mediate. Its starting to appear that stating truths for instance calling someone a Christian, or Republican is automatically and inherently a put down in some circles, like calling them a bad name. Tubman was a Christian that carried a weapon at times and Did brave things. Fought against slavery, fought for the right to vote etc..etc. I would be all for such a Christian of such significant historical accomplishments, because those are the beliefs i adhere to regardless if those beliefs are even relevant to others. But I am not for it. Not because she deserving, is a woman or Christian etc etc, but because I believe that currency, should remain as unchanged as possible. I worry about the confidence,of an ever changing currency. The stuff is already starting to look like board game money.
Changing the design every now and then is a basic anti-counterfeiting measure, along with adding other security features. If the design never changed, the market would be flooded with fakes and that causes all sorts of problems.
I'll add to that...
The new $20 bill also has bumps in it for the vision impaired. They ought to do that with all the bills. Different denomination, different corner or such. That would really be obnoxious for the counterfeiters, especially the ones "bleaching" the smaller denominations and then using the blanks to print larger ones.
I say keep George Washington and get rid of Andrew Jackson on everything. There's no need to celebrate a guy responsible for attempted genocide and the Trail of Tears who also kept hundreds of people captive and enslaved.
Making changes to who is shown on currency doesn't surprise me at all. It's all part of the liberal agenda to marginalize the achievements of white men just like the rewriting of history.
There it is! The stupidest thing I read all day!
Bell would be controversial because it is well passed time a woman got on the currency. I am in favor of the change.
Women have already owned over half the money for years. So it does indeed make sense to put their pictures on it.
Didn't know it was necessary. Thought everyone knew who she was. But why does race matter?
For the same reason her being a woman matters. It's a first. As the anti-discrimination laws used to say, it's a twofer.
And for that matter, there are probably a lot of good 'ol boys in the southern states throwing full beer cans through liqueur store windows as we speak, deja vu first Obama election.
The U.S. should take after Canada. They put cool wildlife stuff like bears 'n' beavers on their coins/currency.
We could put this one on our 50-cent piece.
It's a good idea to accept the changes. A change is usually a good thing and more Americans should be recognized. Doesn't John F. Kennedy deserve recognition? I even think Bill Clinton and Barack Obama deserve such honors in the future as well.
I understand there's a certain way you can fold the back of a $20 bill, and it will look like the World Trade Center on fire.
Meanwhile... Want to know about Harriet Tubman? Here it is: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/won … e-20-bill/ Pretty much shoots down any criticisms.
It's classic. Put the face of an abolitionist on what we have become slaves to.
About the only squawk I have about the currency changes is when they made the nickel and quarter look alike. The small difference in size isn't sufficient for some of us lamer folks.
I have been looking at my money collection. American money is looking more like Euro's. I was actually surprised at the similarity.
What money looks like is all relative. If you look at the exchange rate of pound for dollars and euro's for dollars you will see the American dollar isn't worth much.
Hey I know , lets go all the way with this political correctness crap and put Prince on all paper bills , Hey lets put Dennis Rodman on all of our coins !, How about this , lets put pedophiles on all children's book covers , rapists on women's pocket books and what about transgender porn covers on all of the public bathroom doors , I mean , isn't political correctness about honoring all of us ?
?
With people like Andrew Jackson on money already it's silly to freak out over anybody they choose. You think he was superior to Harriet Tubman? Was it his lust for genocide and near success at it, his paying for hundreds of people to be kidnapped and forced to work for him, or his fierce fighting to criminalize talking about abolition that you love so much? Or was it the way he picked duels with men who said things he didn't like and killed them? If such a criminal warlord lived today in another country, we'd send out drones to kill him for the safety of humanity.
You think Andrew Jackson was a being superior to Harriet Tubman and you class her with pedophiles. You've said as much where all the world can see it. Your life would be so much better if you let go of your hate and learned that murder, slave-holding, and genocide are evil and being black and female are not.
Jackson is still going to be on the $20, just on the back.
If this is how you react to Harriet Tubman, how are you going to react when they unveil the new $666 bill with Ted Bundy? Pace yourself.
Its just more of the same from the same boring P.C. crowd , I got one more for you though , Prince just died so lets put his face on prescription drug bottles , what better way to get more people addicted to drugs , No ................Why....... Not let's be fair ?
Standing liberty gold and silver coins. Women have long been on currency
"Jackson never wanted to be on the $20 bill anyway"

Will paper money every disappear and what would be the pros and cons to a credit society? With everything moving to electronic transactions will paper money disappear and what are the downfalls and the high points of moving to a paperless money society?

My favorite paper money is the Swiss Franc. Every bill is a different color and size, so it's easy to tell them apart. Is anything better than the greenback? What do you think?

Why does paper money *expire* when the country of origin still exists?I really do NOT understand how a country (like Mexico) can print money and then say it isn't worth its face value. I have a 5000 pecos bill from 1989 and apparently it is now Not Worth 5000 pecos - arrggg.

What is Money Actually? It is an often-asked question, and honestly, I still don’t clearly understand what is money. You see when we had real money; we had no distinction between wealth and money. The notion was that gold/silver, etc., is money. With the advent of paper money, we shifted our notion...
