    I had this same problem.  This was the answer for me... Go to the bottom right of your screen.  Click the icon that looks like a loudspeaker.  A little box pops up that says "volume".  Make sure "mute" is not clicked.  Adjust the volume with your mouse.  If you do not see the loudspeaker icon, you may need to click one that looks like an arrow;  it will show you more icons.

    You always need a proper sound driver installed for the sound.Download and install the proper driver for your OS.If you have linux OS , check out your motherboard vendor site or ALSA project.

    If you want more help,give me the motherboard model of of your desktop,if you don't know model no use cpuz (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) its free.
