   I'd say at about eighteen.   I'm being facetious.   I'd say from around twelve, with the proviso that they only carry a pre-paid phone which when the money runs out they can't use again until more cash has been paid in advance.  That way they can't run up a big bill for Mum and Dad to pay.  Also, they'd get an idea of just how expensive cell phone calls can be.
   
   They would also learn to use it judiciously, and not waste in on frivolous, gossip-type calls.

   For me I guess it would be after graduating high school about 16-17 .  Because as earlier the child learned using the cellphone it could lead to addiction as well, because of that the interest of the child towards the lesson is being diverse to the phone.

   As soon as the kid can get a job to pay for the cell phone, then s/he is the perfect age to have one. That said, I do live in a small town, and I can see why a lot of parents in cities and such would like to have a way to contact their children directly in case of an emergency.

   My daughter is 10 and I gave her a cell phone to carry as she walks home part of the way from school with her friends. I know it is pretty young, but its more from a safety point of view and my own piece of mind.

   It depends on the maturity of the child. Now a-days, its best to be able to communicate with your child as soon as either one of you need to. I would give a cell phone to a child as young as 10 years old with specific instructions on its use. I think that phone would be a pay per use phone. It helps keep spontaneous and long calls under control. If for some strange reason, its lost, it would  not hurt my wallet to replace it either.

   I agree the fact the somewhere around where they start earning some money and they can pay their own bill that is the right time to get them a cell phone because i hear alot of parents complaining about their kids using the phone too much, texting too much and so forth. Recently, there was also a article issued about a child who texted couple thousands text messages and parents had to pay big bill for it which it doesnt make sense to me that why would get the package of text messages. Its fine that you buy them a phone for your own worries so you know where your child is but if they are in school you know that they will be school from 8-3 or whatever and then they are suppose to be home by certain time even if they are walking home. Another thing that surprises me is that even kids who are still in kindergarden or preschool they even carry cell phone and some kid might go home and fight or rebel with their parents  that "why can't i get a cell phone, when my friend does" or that "you dont love me" and so forth which might be natural for them to say because those things do come in their mind when they are younger.

   Kids must be ready to obey the cell phone instructions provided to them by their parents. Make sure you buy a cell phone for child for the right reasons and not just because everyone one else has one read more
