   Why don't I have to show an ID to vote for president or anyone else?
   
   I have to show an ID to any policeman that asks, to get a prescription,see the doctor, get my blood drawn, board an air plane, get my taxes done, write a check, accept a job, withdraw money at the bank and sometimes when I use a credit card. Why don't I have to show my ID when I vote for people who will spend billions of mine and other peoples dollars?

   I think showing an ID is appropriate. To get a drivers license in many states you have to show a picture ID, SS card and 2 bills at your home address. PA is offering free picture ID's if you don't have one. It will help cut down on voter fraud as we have had too many elections where there were more votes in a city than residents, and so forth.

   What state do you live in? I"ve been voting since I was 18, and in every election I've voted in, I've had to show some kind of proof of id.

      When my husband moved from Michigan to California he was fabergasted that he didn't have to show ID.  I voted in my first election in November of 1972.  You don't even have to show ID to register here.

   I don't think showing an ID is the problem.  I have always been asked for an ID when i voted in the past.  The problem is the purging of names seemingly at random and targeting certain portions of the population.   Senior citizens who no longer drive, have no drivers license to show, and the forms of ID required in some states are difficult to get without a drivers license, or a birth certificate. 
   If you have not voted in 3 years you are automatically purged, and in Florida Seniors, blacks and other minorities, AND registered democrats are purged without any reason what so ever.  Also, in Florida, people who were charged with a felony in the past and who were reinstated by the last Governor to allow them their same rights, are dismissed by the current Governor who deemed them unworthy (again) to be allowed to vote in this state without his express approval that would take longer than the time between now and the elections in November. .  Removing the rights regained by people who have paid their dues to society simply to eliminate the competition is certainly not the American way, but more of an underhanded ploy.   
   Many states around the country that are controlled by the GOP are following this practice simply to eliminate their competition. (Please understand that this statement has nothing to do with any bias on my part, it is simply what is happening around this country)

      Maybe you should take what evidence you have and launch a suit to get that changed.  If you can't, perhaps you should get honest and admit voter fraud happens. I'm sure the black panthers will help you fund it.

      Sarcasm? Yes, voter fraud does happen, but not in the scale that the GOP says in order to purge voters.  There is more fraud done by manipulating electronic machines than by voters. Who is responsible when names of deceased, et al, cast their votes?

      In Louisiana each registered voter is sent a card to the address on record. If the card is returned, efforts are made to contact by phone and advise them they must correct their address. If that fails, the name is purged.

      There was a news item yesterday where businessmen have sent in their requests for absentee ballot have been returned deceased.  They have all come out of the same post office.  They are all Republicans.  California has very few Republicans.

   In Oregon, we receive out ballots in the mail, mark them, then mail thme back or drop them in special mailbox-like  stations around towns. No long lines, no problems. Voter fraud is almost non-existent in the US anyway, despite what the scare tactics used by the GOP and talk radio try to tell us.

      Really?  My best friend lives in North Carolina.  She received a sample ballot at her parents home in CA.  She voted in NC in 2010.  She is still on the CA rolls and could have voted in both places if she were a criminal

   In the state of Washington , we also have voting by mail. Showing ID is not a question but it should be. When Christine Gregoire was elected Governorette, the first time, her majority was almost a perfect match to  the number of dead voters (I call it the "zombie vote") who some how managed to get out of their graves, find their ballots, and mark them for her. If we can't get the system back to requiring voting at polling places, then periodic purging is the only way to stop this type of fraud short of hiring voodoo priests to conjure  a hex that would stop the zombies from getting to their old mail boxes and capturing their ballots.According to the voodoo legends of New Orleans, pulverizing  red brick  to a fine powder and applying it to mail boxes  could be a part of the solution because zombies can't stand red brick powder.

      more sarcasm? i do agree that mail ins are cast anyway the recipient so desires. Purging is never appropriate when done just before elections.  Standard practices has been that this practice is inappropriate.

   Anytime I voted, I had to show an ID. I have lived in six different states, they all required ID at voting. Where do you go to vote that they don't require this?  Either the ID or your voter registration card is required or no vote.  I suppose someone is not playing by the rules!  Hmmmm....

      If a special type or kind of photo Id is required to vote in this election. So unique that voters who voted for years with regular ID's would no longer be eligible to vote in this election. That would be voter surpression.

      This would be true only if the  issuer could refuse to issue it on a whim, on the basis of a  adjustable standard as was true in the South. States used voter literacy testing. A test for a black voter would have stumped a Yale law Professor.

   If  you vote in Louisiana, you are going to show a picture ID before you get to sign the book and after you do those two things you get to cast your vote. It is is a necessary practice to prevent people from voting more than once or voting on behalf of another person.

      Texas and Florida don't have that and are being sued by the federal government because they would like to  require ID.  CA doesn't require ID.  The fact that at least 3 key states are that open to fraud should  make everyone shiver.

      I was asked to bring a picture ID too at last election but they did not even look at it or anyones. Why? I am all for proving before you vote and am suspicious of anyone who does not agree. America has always been about ID, with illegals it changes?

      Eric Holdner attorney general of the US nullified convictions of New Black Panthers who kept people from voting in the 2008 election.  They threatened people with foul language and clubs.  There are videos on the internet.

   You don't have to show an ID because it is unnecessary. In the lawsuit against the State of Pennsylvania regarding voter ID laws, the state has formally admitted that there has NEVER been a single case of in-person voter fraud in the state, nor do they know of it ever happening anywhere.
   
   Meanwhile there are 750,000 voters in the state without the proper ID. It doesn't matter what you think is normal regarding IDs. The truth is many people do not have them for a variety of legitimate reasons.
   
   When you make it harder to vote, fewer people vote. When you enact policies which disproportionately impact Democratic-leaning voters, than fewer Democrats relative to Republicans will end up voting. The Republicans are fully and completely aware of this. Anyone who actually thinks this is about voter fraud (which doesn't exist) is fooling themselves. This is disenfranchisement and it is shameful.

      There have been cases in Louisiana. In one case the total vote for a precinct exceeded the population of the precinct. A group of people have voted on behalf of the occupants of the local cemetery. I covered the aftermath of that story. It is true.

      People registered the whole Dallas football team in Las Vegas last election and there were many other names, like Micky Mouse, etc. Fraud has always existed in elections.

      I have been voting since becoming a citizen in 2001, and have always had to show my ID.  I have read, though, of so much fraud by political mobsters. Such a dirty shame.  The  particular  story of voting with dead people's names is truly nauseating.

      The stories are always far larger than legitimately documented and prosecuted cases. 300 million votes between 2002-2007 resulted in 86 convictions, and most of those were simple accidents.

      it is amazing how innovative people are about cheating.  If it wasn't so disgusting, it would actually be amusing at what they come up with.  When i worked DOC most of the inmates voted without knowing it.  (They did not vote liberal.)

      Americans are more than use to having to have two or more IDs, why now is it such a big problem? I certainly don't mind proving who I am and will help anyone else who has a BIG problem getting an ID. As long as they are Americans.

      Doesn't matter what you think is normal or easy. Pennsylvania alone has 750,000 registered voters without the proper ID. Changing the rules months before an election WILL result in some of them not voting. That is the intended result.

       Up until we become overwhelmed with illegals we (citizens) have always had to have an ID or up to 3! Now it isn't important? My aged mother had to have a picture ID to do any business with the government and she was a VA widow!

       Overwhelmed? What are they about 2% of the population? Many states allow (or did allow) a wide variety of ways to prove identity including things like SS cards, birth certificates, utility bills, hunting licenses, etc.

    I have always had to show a picture ID with address and signature on it to vote in New York as to match the information in the book according to the city District you  are presently living in.  Nothing has ever changed for this procedure here and I've been voting for 40 years or more.  I did mail in an absentee ballot while living in Illinois for being a NY Resident.

       Not true. Historically, in most states there are a variety of ways to establish your eligibility at the polls--a utility bill, a bank statement or rental receipt with your name and address on it.
