I think the emergence of the internet has led stores more to doing online stamps rather than the older S&H green stamps. I would imagine it was just a matter that they were fazing out of them.

Green Stamps, believe it or not, are still around. But like everything else in the world they've gone virtual. You now have to lick your monitor on your computer.

Funny.  I will have to look them on the net.  My mom used to collect these when I was a child.  She would let us lick them and place them in her book.

We knew them as Green Shield stamps here. People used to smoke themselves into their pine boxes to get the 'free gifts'. I thought they'd hit dirt way back when, but as Handicapped Chef says they're 'virtual' these days, that has to be the direction they went.
(When something goes wrong or someone dies here, we say 'they've gone west')

I think over here they've turned into 'Argos', a catalogue firm with high street branches.

Oh fun question. I haven't thought about those in years.  I used to put them in books and there were also Blue Chip Stamps.  Then you'd get enough books and go to the redemption center and get something.  The last thing I got was a lamp.  Then you would wait and it came out from the back room on a roller conveyor belt.

    fun memory-thanks

I think 'Argos' has taken over from Green Shield here. Going to buy stuff there is like queueing up at the benefits office (I've done that as well), and you usually find the same people.

They have gone to the country, the rural areas, but they don't call them green stamps anymore.  When I fill out 23 cards of 10 stamps each from my local grocery, I will get a free 14 pound turkey!  Yeah....they system is still alive!

I am amazed to see that Green Stamps are still around in any form.  Sperry and Hutchinson  (that's the S&H) were sold in 1981.  I understand it now offers 'green points' as rewards for Internet purchases.  Live and learn!
