   Trust.  Just like any relationship, a friendship needs trust between the two people involved.  If there is no trust you won't feel you can share your inner most thoughts, feelings or experiences.  Even social acquaintances share personal info and one hopes that what is shared in private is not blabbed around to other people.

   Trust and understanding.... giving each other space and to be able to help and share each other's concerns. At the same time correcting each other, without feeling bad or egoistic about it.

   I think some great elements have been named already.  I would couple Denise's answer with honesty.  I have found out who my true friends are this year because those who have been completely honest are the ones I am keeping around going into next year.  I feel why lie to me.  What have I done to you other than be there for you when you needed it most.  When others who you called friend left you standing on the side of the road, who did you call?

   A good friend is someone you can be yourself with, laugh genuinely with, and count on during rough times. A good friend is also someone you can go weeks without seeing but when you finally do see them again, it's as if only a day went by.

   trust, respect, the shoulder to cry on, the assurance that whatever will be said will be used against each other, the land of zero demands and requests, the land of giving freely without thinking of rewards, the land of every day love and understanding ...I have just entered that land and I am better for it:)
