   Lisa, that is a wonderful question and I can't wait to hear the answers here.  My husband is a HAM radio operator and he gets excited when he reaches someone in another state...he says, I talked to a guy in Washington.  I try to tell him - you know the phone will do that too! 
   
   I do not see the need or fascination in texting (shhh or HAM radio either)

      Oh, duffsmom I so would love to do the Ham radio thing. Doesn't your husband connect with people from other countries? That's what seems interesting to me.

      He does.  He has talked to people all over the world, Japan, Siberia, Europe. He really enjoys it.

   I've never been really good at talking on the phone (or even talking in person sometimes). I find that when I'm nervous, I might stammer, or say "like" and "um" too much. I do enjoy talking to people, but I've always more quiet than others. Texting helps me gather my thoughts better at times, and makes me feel more comfortable.

   Text is easier for me to communicate with many of my employees when times are hectic. I'm often on the phone with our clients and I can still respond to a text while talking. I also don't have to worry about the long winded people who simply talk too much. On top of that there is often a lot of background noise here as my children play so I don't have to worry about having to stop mid sentenced on the phone to say "YAY you peepeed in the potty" or "Don't pull your brother's arm off". It simplifies my life.

   One reason why I sometimes text is when I want a record of who said what.
   
   Another reason is that my teenage daughter often will answer texts when she won't answer the phone.

   There is probably do definitive answer to this, I never text.  I would guess that if we look at it carefuly, we would find horror from many people at the thought of phoning, to actually interact with someone.

   Time doesn't allow a phone call or not a good time to call, maybe for me or the person I need to contact. Sometimes I don't want to talk to anyone so texting is perfect!

   I use both actually- not proud to say that I have spent 4 hours on the phone before several times. I maintain and operate radios in the military and know first hand why people prefer communicating via data rather than voice:
   
   1. People can be hard to understand.
   2. Some people can't gather their thoughts. You probably had a 10 minute phone call turn into a 2 hour phone call at one point.
   3. Data is nice. If you forget, you refer to the text. It also lowers the chances of any error for the sender and the receiver since they can read what they write before sending it. If you have to take long reports or record the conversation via voice, it can be a pain.
   4. You can stay in contact with multiple people at once using text. Can't really do it on a phone (skype doesn't count).

    I use both. Love talking on phone but when the person on the other side is not available then only i text them. Or else I prefer giving a phone call.

    Because phone calls take way too long! Plus, the other person has to be available right then and there and, usually, they're not.

    Let's face it. A text gets the point across without the hassle of a lengthy phone call. It sucks if you are looking for more intimacy, but it gets the point across.

    Sometimes texting is just way easier than calling. However, I'm not one who is going to sit there and have day-long conversations via text messaging. I will call someone if I have more than one or two quick things to say that I could just communicate easier via text message. Oddly enough, I feel as though some people are becoming almost annoyed with receiving phone calls...

    Texting can work better in some situations, especially if it is too noisy.  And can also be more discreet.

    Several reasons.
    One ----often those I text do not have time to talk at that moment and can text me back at their convenience.
    Second---I am hard of hearing since early childhood and texting and skyping works best for me.
