I feel that they are very unnecessary. Children should be taught in their younger years to behave properly in public. Leashes are for pets.
They're often used for special needs, not bratty, children who don't have a sense of danger and will run off or into traffic. They may look weird but better that than for them to get hurt.
Kids should be free and learn the consequences of their actions. Running away is part of breaking free in some sense - i believe it is unwise not to allow children to rebel now and then. Leashes are ridiculous, and have never been necessary. Yes, some kind of accident could occur, but isnt such risks a basic condition in life?
They are routinely recommended for children with special needs and I see nothing wrong with using them for safety reasons.
However, today I was at the store and two children ran like the wind from their parents. They had a hard time catching them. When my children were young, I kept them in a cart for their own safety and for the safety from others running them over.
I am all for it when they are young. I would rather a child be on a leash then get taken or run over by a car. Especially for special needs children. Aren't we all tethered to our phones or computers? At least that tethering is for the childs well being.
From a learning perspective I'm not sure I see much of a difference between a verbal leash (verbally reprimanding and possibly punishing), a hand leash, a shopping cart leash, or a cute teddy bear leash. All are methods of boundary determination that teach a child they can go this far and no farther. The leash gives the kid some degree of autonomy and is easier than holding them the whole time or constantly yelling at them.
We have friends whose child was a premie and little for her age. She loves her fancy leash. I think it's great if the child doesn't scream to get out of it. It needs to be introduced properly to the child.
I always thought they were a bit strange but after having three boys and even though I never used one with those boys, I can see where they could come in handy. Their instincts are to explore and the little buggers can at times be fast and slippery . . .
Leashes on kids look so weird and I often heard about it but when I see it I think it shouldn't be that way, leashes are used for pets and a child having a leash is not a right thing to do looks odd as well. Parents didn't ave leashes for children a few years ago and now it just makes life look so insecure.
It's not exactly used as a fashion statement, but I understand what you're saying. When I used to see kids on leashes I thought it was because their parents didn't want to watch them. Really it's because these kids are special and tend to dart.
Kid leashes are ridiculous. If you can't control your child and keep them near you then you are an unfit parent.
I haven't got a toddler who runs off wildly, so I would not use one. I think a child is better in a stroller than on a leash if running off is a problem.
