What are the main indicators that the average American is somewhat uninformed and gullible

in regards to electing political candidates to their respective offices whether local, state, and/or national?

I guess the main one is that they seem to follow a particular political party's agenda like sheeple.  They are more interested in who wins Dancing With The Stars and American Idol than their country collapsing around their ears.  I can go on and on but that seems to be the basic problem.

Uh huh yes.  Many American people see politicians as movie stars and saviors. It is sad that intelligent discernment has flow OUT the window! The American public needs to become more politically aware of all political angles re: elected officials!

Because "every" politician will promise the world just to be elected. Knowing the entire time that this will not be possible. They pull at the heart strings and the wallet of us vulnerable voters.

Also many times, the one who is elected is the lesser of two evils. Such was the case in the last presidential election.

It sure WAS.  I voted for the lesser, unfortunately, the lesser proved to be THE MORE evil!

I'm not sure if "gullible" is so much the word as "uninterested" is.
People generally don't care about things that do not directly effect their immediate household. In fact there are many citizens of the U.S. who would rather see us withdraw from the rest of the world and "their problems". Being an "isolationist" is not uncommon neither is wanting to roll the clock back to the 1950s.
I know people who refuse to watch the news or read a newspaper. I've known people that stand by every decision the government makes and I've known people that believe the government is "out to get me". Both are being extreme!
There are lots of people who have decided not to worry about things they cannot control. They get up, go to work, feed & clothe their family, watch TV, go to the park, the beach, the game, the movies, or the county fair and they are "happy" with their life! Clearly they subscribe to the belief that "ignorance is bliss".
In some ways they are (happier) than those of us who are "informed". :-)

People generally don't care about things that do not directly affect them because they are too uninformed to know what directly affects them. Maybe when they discover laws like Ovomitcare do directly affect them they will become less gullible, maybe.

The main indicators that the average American (GM I'm surprised at you! Remember Rock NJ, "America is not a country!" bla, bla, bla) is uninformed and gullible - there are FOUR and they all hinge on morality.
1). No respect for the truth - when the leaders and the media and the public accept lying as "business as usual" or the norm and society does nothing to reject liars, lies and coverups (rather promotes the lies and the perpetrators) the United States (America is not a country, remember? bla, bla, bla) is leading it's citizen's down the slippery slope to imbecility.
2). When Americans (whoops, America is not a country, remember? bla, bla, bla) forsake the work ethic and exchange the American (whoops, America is not a country, remember? bla, bla, bla) dream for entitlements they become brain dead.
3). When the electorate keeps voting for the same people or party despite the fact that after 50 years of doing so their problems are all worse than they have ever been. For example the Black vote, despite crushing unemployment, black voters overwhelmingly went for Obama in 2012. When you see groups like this one change their voting pattern you will know that the public is becoming more informed and less gullible - until then start buying stock in Bananas because America (oh excuse me, Rock) I mean the United States is on it's way to becoming a banana republic).
4). When the country has been heading in the direction of a Nanny State for years and is undeniably becoming one in the future yet some people claim we are going in the opposite direction?...these people are totally uninformed and gullible as can be - you can't have a better indicator than that. :-)

#3 Blacks have been voting for the Democrat candidate long before Obama! They voted for Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, and Bill Clinton. If Herman Cain (a black Republican) ran against Hilary Clinton; Hilary would carry the black vote. That's the truth!

Even though the blacks voted for Obama, at least they knew he was not out to crush them. The Republicans made it clear what their agenda was and is. They were destroying the economy, the middle and the lower class. Is it any wonder why Obama again?

Yeah he's done wonders for black community’s economic challenges...14% unemployment rate, and 42% for black youth Net wealth dropped by 27.1 percent. Blacks make up 38 percent of inmates in prisons, 27 percent of those living below the poverty line.

Look at the Republicans. Weapons of mass destruction smile ... they try to take down everybody. If they would have won the last four years the country would be worse. Obama's bailouts remember?

anyone who look at blacks as the problem of this country are fools. Blacks was not ALLOW TO  any of this country social program until the civil right act that act got black to access to social program that whites enjoy for years.12% of USA population

The main indicator?? The election of Barack Hussein Obama, not once, but twice. That says all anyone will ever need to know about how stupid the American electorate is.

Correction - not "the electorate", about half the electorate. You know which half.  :-)

too many people are too easily swayed and they don't do research before making a major decision. they believe that if the internet or tv said it than it must be right.

I believe that looking at the state of the country: real statistics, overreaction driven by media and behavior are the indicators of the level of wisdom, understanding and knowledge that we have.

We fellow Americans are dummies from way back.  Not that we are ignorant, but still yet we are willfully ignorant of things that we should be more knowledgeable.  While the masses have slept and watched TV, the rustlers have cleaned out the cattle, the horses and even cleaned out the barn.  What is there left but a mess and even the porridge is stolen from under us while we sit to eat.. The treasures we once had, are nowhere to be found!   Where is the small business owners that filled the downtown streets? big market industries have taken over and have found that in desperation we will work for them. Farmers have just about had enough.. Who appreciates the skilled American workers that once stood for what America is?  It is no longer about the fairness of labor, or strength of our economy.. We are way past being a strong nation. We are weak and worthless almost. Worrying about how we are going to pay our debts. With all that we do in paying taxes, and voting and campaigning, the spending trends of government have sunk the ship. The borrowed dollars that we send abroad. Money we waste on every hand. But payday is coming. WE will surely see a day when the carpetbagger and scalawags are purged from our midst.  A day coming when we can be proud of our country and citizenship again.. We are in need of honest, strong and worthy leaders.  Ones that will be sought out and voted in whether they can pay for a huge campaign or not.. Yes we DO need to read more and keep up with not only Washington, but local and state political issues and legislative bills.    There is such a smudge pot of left and right "causes" that are preying on the old folks to send them money. And for what?  They are all using it to support themselves and to push their agenda's while telling the innocents that they are "going to clean up Washington".  yeah right! We need to sound the alarm to claim back our individuality, resourcefulness and honesty.  wake up America!

Their health system? It's over medicalised and in the dark ages.

In Australia we all get free health care.

The legal system? In the US legitimately good people get sued for stupid things, which stops them wanting to do anything at all.
