Do you drive in the snow or stay home?

I am one of those people who is terrified to drive in the snow - especially with kids.  Party tonight, but thinking I gotta cancel with the forecast.  Is it a valid excuse?  3-5 inches expected..... and it could get icy by drive-home time!  Hostess isn't waivering....

It all depends. If there's a lot a snow on the roads and the road crews have made no attempt to clean things up, I hate driving. I'll call off from work or change other plans if driving means doing so on those types of roads, if there's been freezing rain, or I'm fairly sure things have melted and refrozen. Some things (even work in my mind) aren't worth risking ones life to attend. As much as you and your children may be looking forward to the party, I think the same thing applies. If you feel uncomfortable driving under those conditions, don't go.

I always stay home. Of course, I live in Louisiana and we get a snowfall about every five years. I think the most that was ever officially recorded was four inches, but you had to measure fast before the sun got to bright.

In reality, because it does not snow much hear, driving can be very dangerous, because people do not know how to do it and the local governments do not have the equipment to clear up the areas where it might accumulate and cause an accident.

Usually, most businesses announce that only key personnel should come in--I always thought that was a trick to see if people really think they are contributing to the place where they work.

Growing up in Chicago you pretty much get use to the snow, so if I have something to do, I have no problem going out in the snow. The snow doesn't bother me at all.

i live in wisconsin. staying home isn't always an option. even if a foot of snow is forecast, nothing shuts down. we all must still go to work and even most schools will still be open.

Thanks for all your responses!  I love to know the different takes on this issue.  Mostly, so I can measure my own irrationality!!!!

Thanks DDE.  Just what I want to hear!  So many people make me feel guilty when I cancel plans because of snow, but truly, it is not worth risking an accident.

I love driving in snow, although it is very risky. You can control your vehicle but what if others can not control their vehicle and hit you? So it is an adventurous part to drive in snow.  If I have to go out, I really don't mind going out in snow.

I drive in the snow because I need to.  I have kids to get to school, I need to get to work.  I wish I didn't because of the increase of accidents on the road, but it must be done if I want to pay my heat bill for the winter.

I understand, Dragonflycolor.  I often think of the people who have to get to work like that and get the kids to school, having to go to work.  I can only imagine how tough the snow can be on you on those days.

It's frustrating, but I try not to complain too much because people in Alaska have to trek through worse.

I drive! The scary thing about driving in the snow is the people around you. It's hard enough to not get into accidents because of other people when there isn't snow. When there is snow my fear of other drivers spikes! But, not driving in the snow isn't possible with work and other duties. I've just got to keep my eyes open for crazy drivers that don't know how to handle their car in the snow.

Stay home because no matter how experienced you are in driving in snow, you have no control over the other guy who isn't and could slam into you.  Good luck.
