Why do people buy books on the subject of procrastination, and never read them?

I'm a master procrastinator!  I remember purchasing a book many years ago on 'overcoming procrastination.'  Immediately afterwards, I gave it to my good friend to borrow and told her to keep it as long as she wanted, and I didn't have a problem "waiting" to read it.  It was never returned!

I've gotten dozens of books that I haven't read, but I'm planning to get around to it.
As for your question, I think we all do that as a kind of habit or compulsion - we buy books, put them on a shelf, forget them, then we find them and read them.
    It happens.

You are so right, Robert.  I do have several brand new books on my bookshelves that were never even opened.  But, like you, I'm planning to read them… someday!  Appreciate your input.

I think because they really don't want to change. As a fellow master procrastinator I've bought those books but once I got to the hard stuff I was willing to move on or think about it tomorrow.

Wow, so true!  Without a commitment to change, all the books in the world will not help us!  We have to change our mind, before we can change our life.  Thanks so much for your thoughtful answer!

Read my hub about procrastination. It's shorter than a book and has tips you can put to use right away. You'll find the title on my profile page. Just click on my icon.  (By the way, if you're a procrastinator, you have lots of company!)

Very helpful article indeed! Yes, I do believe strong motivation is required to find freedom from this bad habit. I liked how the Hub listed the 4 types of Procrastinators (I'm in group #1 - the Perfectionist Procrastinator!) and why we procrastinate

I'll think of a good answer for this question later.

LOL… meanwhile, you may want to read JayeWisdom's article on Procrastination.  It may shed some light as to why you're putting off answering my question!

Some are natural procrastinators, some achieve procrastination and some have procrastination thrust upon them.
I'm a member of the second and third group. Having procrastination thrust upon me by virtue of not having much cash to splash, I've landed splat in the middle of the third group by default.
My group are masters of the 'round tuit' faction, 'when I get a round tuit I'll do it'. As mentioned elsewhere, these 'round tuits' seem to be in short supply these days.
    Roll on payday.

This is a trick question, right? LOL, I had a very good giggle. You are a procrastinator and you buy a book on procrastination...lol...when did you plan on reading it?..lol. I think not. I'm sorry I could not be of help.

Hilarious question. I will comment as soon as I get around to it.

I think part of this is a matter of where we set our priorities, and therefore what we commit to. If we commit to too much, then we are constantly trying to catch up and "get around to" other things we might like to do. If we own our priorities, we may have lots more time to do other things, since we've "scheduled in" the time. Saying "no" is hard sometimes...but we need to keep assessing what is best for our lives at the moment.

Sometimes I find that I accomplish a bunch of things by procrastinating doing others. I got lots of knitting done the other day by procrastinating on my garden tasks.

I wrote a fun hub on procrastination. Have you read it?  If so, glad you did, and thanks if you left a comment. If not...have a blast with it!

    Have a great day!
