   Hello Grace,
   I think these parents feel they have to shield their kids from the violence in the world today and protect them from emotional upset. Even though it may be thought of as an act of love, it is not a truly effective approach to turning out well-adjusted adults down the road. We, as parents, are given the job to equip our children with the skills they need to function in society once they leave the nest. A child who is not allowed to experience disappointment, and degrees of fear and failure will never learn to cope with them, and these issues surround us on a daily basis. The key is not avoiding hurtful things, but rather discussing them and working through them from the safety of a loving and supportive family. Children become more confident and resilient each time they conquer these  setbacks.  Overprotection, though not abusive in itself,   often leads to insecure kids who are frequently abused and bullied at school. The result: anxiety and depression, possible suicide  or misguided anger, aggression, and violent behavior. If a parent raises a child in the shadow of her own dysfunctional past, it would just perpetuate the dysfunction.

      Exactly!  Overprotective parents create insecure, weak, infantilized children who have NO life & survival skills. These children are proverbially eaten by wolves!

   Some overprotective parents actually prevent their children from having what could be life enriching experiences causing their child to lose stimulation necessary for learning. For example, a parent who never lets their infant leave the home can actually cause the infant to have developmental and cognitive delays due to lack of stimulation and new experiences.
