What is your favorite Bible version and why?

   What is your favorite Bible version and why?
   
   I just asked someone what version of the Bible they studied. They refused to answer but insisted it was not certain versions. I admit, I like them all, I even like some Coptic stuff. I do not dislike any version. But are versions like politics? Do we need to pick one and dislike the others?

   I choose versions that are word for word translations.  Included in this list are English Standard Version, Revised Standard Version and King James.  There are, I believe, a few others....oh yes, and Young's Literal Translation also.  There are versions that I avoid or I use with great caution.  Word for word translation is important because we start to muddle the meaning of scripture when we translate phrase by phrase.

      I like your answer. Recently I have been looking at children's versions which are quite interesting. I find they all lead to my better understanding.

   The version that I was brought up on; King James. I read other versions  too. The New KJV is next and the The New International Version is more today English friendly but they should all mean the same thing.

      Mr. Word it is good to hear from you. I find that if I read any version through the eyes of the intention to find God's love they basically all do mean the same thing. But I do like delving into it word by word also.

      Very good. You guys who read it and find it silly make me happy. I always learn so much from you folk. It is said that that crazy guy Jesus loved everybody. Now that is silly. No Way! But I try, sometimes just to see if it can be done. Welcome.

      The reason that The Message is funny is because of the way it was worded.  The content is not laughable, the guy who wrote it was--his writing style.

      It is inappropriate to say the Bible is the worst written book in history. But it may be right. C'mon who says "thou shalt slew"? Try reading some to a 5 year old and putting it in common English. I have to translate English to English for me.

   New American Standard Bible (NASB)
   New King James Version (NKJV)
   New International Version (NIV)
   English Standard Version (ESV)
   
   I use these four the most. I have 38 versions on my computer that I access via E-Sword. E-Sword allows word and phrase searches. Dictionaries, commentaries etc.
   
   I don't like the KJV most likely because of the King James Only crowd. I also don't like it because it is written in a 400 year old dead dialect that I don't speak or care to understand. I also don't like it because it causes perfectly good human beings to speak funny when they pray.

   Sometimes life hurts so much, it is impossible to find the words to even utter a prayer. This verse gives me comfort because it assures me that, when I can't find the words, the Holy Spirit feels my pain, hears what is in my heart, and my prayer is heard.

   I really cannot say which is my favorite as I cannot remember much of the earlier versions I had as far as helpful or hard to understand. I have only one version of a study Bible today - NIV. I am interested in getting a New Interpreter's Study Bible: New Revised Standard Version With the Apocrypha. But, first I would like to see the print size Ha - Ha :-)
   
   Sharing is I looked at my historical usage, of which transitioned from one version to another. I think during the years I really studied I spent more time with various book commentaries leaving lasting impressions.
   
   The last version I read from front to back was a New Living Translation. It was for a community college class with the Bible as literature. That offered a whole new perspective. Highly recommended if any are interested.

   Mine is the New King James Version (Oxford bible) It's a study bible and so much easier to read. I do have three different bibles and sometimes I will switch up. I do this because although they say the same thing they use different words and somehow this keeps me interested.

      Well Dana you picked my favorite go to Bible if I just can't grab onto a citation someone has given. Right now I am studying out of the 1907 version of the Douay Latin Vulgate translation. It was passed down from my Jesuit schooled father. Fun!

    "It doesn't matter what "version" of the Bible one studies IF they have "WAITED" (Acts 1:4) and received HELP from the Holy Spirit who "leads and guides us into ALL TRUTH" understanding is given! 
    
    No matter what "version,"  without guidance from the Holy Spirit one only reads "the letter" (I Corinthians 6:3) forming their own opinion or interpretation creating 33K + denominations in the US!
    
    Everyone should have "WAITED!"

       KJV, Copyright 1967 by Oxford University Press, Inc., The Scofield Reference Bible, Copyright 1909, 1917, copyright renewed, 1937, 1945
       The New Scofield Study Bible was previously published as The New Scofield Reference Bible.

       Wait is beautiful and something near and dear to those of us getting a little older. 50+ years of understanding scripture gives us something a new convert just cannot get. One has to wait to interpret and waiting takes years and years.
