Why are some american Jews supporting the Democratic party and Barack Obama?

In light of the recent UN resolution against Israel, why are American Jews supporting the Democrats and Barack Obama for the most part? Can someone explain this? What does the Democratic party offer the Jewish people that they keep voting for them even if it seems they are hurting their own? What am I missing?

My sense is that American Jews are very secular. I do not get the impression that they have any interest or belief in the claim that Israel is the land belonging to the Jews, as outlined or implied in the Old Testament. Consequently, they have chosen to concentrate on other social directives, such as giving to the poor. In short, they have adopted socialism and rejected the historical legacy of the Jews of ancient times. However, they take exception to the Holocaust, while ignoring their deliverance from bondage under the Egyptians.
Personally, I find it strange that they do not support Israel---the only Democratic country in the Middle East.
Anyway, they chose the Democratic Party, which claims to help the poor.

That being said, not all Jews support Palestine over Israel.

I'm not so sure about the secular part. There are plenty of Orthodox Jews who votes democratic. Thanks for weighing in.

Good question and I don't know why. But, CA, Il and NY are very big Jewish Communities and Democrat Stronghold. The Jews are also very pro ACLU which is strange because they wind up defending the people that want to kill the Jews.

I was born in Manhattan, and grew up in NY, and then I lived in both Northern and Southern California.
Growing up in NY, it seemed like most people that I knew were democrats, coming from generations of democrats. If you wanted a job in NY that was controlled by any government agency, you really had to be a democrat or say you were.

California has been democrat for as long as I have been here. Looking at California would show you how the US would look with democrats running congress and the presidency election after election.

Not being a native Californian, I don't know why most people here are democrats. Other than the schools favor democrats, and there are some very liberal colleges.

I would say that democrats politicians in CA provide a lot of handouts to minorities, and illegal aliens.

Sorry, but I don't have a clue, I only know what I have observed.

I am baffled as well. I haved lived in NY all my adult life. It is a blue state. It is the same with Blacks. Year after year, they vote for Democrats and yet, their conditions have not improved economically. The elites have convinced them of evil GOP

A lot of that has to do with parents giving their children their religion and their politics, at least from my experience.

The Jews in this country owe their allegiance to America, not Israel.  Those that do not support Netanyahu's incursion into the Palestinian territory see it for what it is, a land grab.  How can you have a two state solution when Netanyahu uses the excuse of Palestine does not want to give Israel the right to exists?  And by the same token Israel does not want to give the right to Palestine and it's people to exists.

After WWII, the Jews from all over migrated from their various countries to Israel and Palestine with the intention of taking over the Palestinian territory because they are the chosen people according to the bible.

Most of the Palestinians at the time were farmers, while the Israeli's were and still are highly educated people from Europe and Russia.  The   Israeli's did everything they could to keep the Palestinians from mixing with Israeli's.  They pushed down Palestinian's houses with  bulldozers and started their settlements into Palestinian territory. As a teenager,  I remember seeing how they turned Palestinian home owners into refugees in their own country.  By the way, there is no real border between Israel and the Palestinian territory.  it was never created, because after WWI, the British under the Balfour Declaration gave Israel the right to do what ever they wanted with the territory.

Obama did not support the UN resolution because he is tired of the passive resistance on both sides and so are many of the Democratic Jews in this country.  Obama just gave Netanyahu 38 billion dollars for what? Here is the reason why, based on the mission statement of Theordor Herzel the first Zionist Congress of 1897:

    1. The promotion of the settlement of Jewish agriculturists, artisans, and tradesmen in Palestine.

    2. The federation of all Jews into local or general groups, according to the laws of the various countries.

    3. The strengthening of the Jewish feeling and consciousness.

    4. Preparatory steps for the attainment of those governmental grants which are necessary to the achievement of the Zionist purpose.

(It is item four that is pure genius. It can be decoded to mean the Zionist and Israel will have endorsement by other countries in order to become a legitimate country. The Palestinians did not do that. The Balfour Declaration does not call for Palestine to be a legitimate country.)  Those four statements and the fact that they believe they are God's chosen people, is all the justification Israel needs to continue what they are doing.

Brad:  Yes, the Arabs lost and the Palestinians are still the refugees with no legitimate border between Israel and the Palestinian territory. And Netanyahu is still building settlements and will continue to do that no matter who tries to stop him.

I added the 6 day war to my new hub so that you will be able to air your total opinion without being confined. Palestine continues to say they want to Eradicate Israel,  Israel just wants to keep their own. Terrorist like Palestine want to kill

Brad:  Did the Palestinians ever build settlements in Israel?  The Israelis only kill when they are attacked, but they provoke and  make refugees out of the Palestinians by settlements in Palestinian territory.  It's a case of who started first?

Palestine has always had terrorists, and they have always declared their wish to eradicate Israel. Palestine is the provoker, and we shouldn't back terrorist like them, Israel is our only ally in the Middle East.

Whether there are settlements or no settlements, Hamas will always manufacture excuses to bomb Israel. The terrorist group, Hamas, despises Democracy in any form and in any place. That is what leftists Jews and liberals choose to ignore.

Leslie, you make a point. But you mix it in with such partisan vitriolic hate crap that it loses your point. We see this so much today that real issues get lost.

i see you didnt call out brad for his "partisan crap"...why is that? thats what I see a lot of. people here hate in dems, clinton, obama and islam, with nary a condemnation.but you jump on me. that, in itself, is YOUR partisan crap.hp in a nutshell.

Excuse me. Brad's partisan crap shows up in his repeated problems with folk commenting on his outrageously bigoted and partisan questions. He requires no comment as he is clearly so partisan as it need not a comment. Brad has issues from NY to SoCAl.

wrong. it does require comment, since you take it upon yourself to repudiate me. you need to repudiate anyone else just as much. and btw, id like to know how saying "im glad obama has a mind of his own" is such partisan vitriolic hate crap.

Hmm. "brutal" "war crimes" "brainwashed" "guilty of violating International law". And then mixed in the clear cheer-leading for Obama. Maybe it is just me that thinks that is party slanted and partisan.

They took the Torah commandment to do good in the world and assumed that by allying with a big government, they can use the government to achieve good. The fact that government policies foster dependence and trap people in degrading poverty to guarantee their votes is routinely ignored or blamed on broader society instead of the failed policies.

Tamara, that may be true but it does not explain how or why they would put politics ahead of safety for their own people? Have they forgotten what people have done in the past? The holocaust.
