As civilizations & societies become progressive & evolved, religious belief is decreasing.   Only those who are less educated profess religious belief.   Many people view religion as an antiquated practice suited to a less sophisticated era in history.   Will religion eventually become extinct as more people become educated & enlightened?

Will religion go extinct? - No

Religion is based on fear and the world is dominated & run by fear. Nationalism & Government are the new God's which have completed into a new highest degree of exterior persona world leadership.
In the subconscious world of the people. In degrees we go from survival to onwards to thriving in love and work. The fastest growing group in the world is nonbelievers at 25,% population. I don't expect religion to drop below half to 30% in the world in my lifetime. In some ways it already has by most religious people saying that they are spiritual rather than religious and don't believe in hell.

Still Christians own 94% of the US Congress & whitehouse, the nonbelievers zero.
All Muslim countries are run by all Muslim. This won't.change rapidly. Then we have the long history of religions that blossom 5000 years ago. Still deeply engrained in endocunated camps, religious schools, books and many bonding for fear of eternal torture in hell.

One tool I am working on,  is arts and culture. Religion has use the tool of the arts to promote their culture narrow veiw of the world. Plus their goat herder guild to the Universe.

The arts have been the greatest influence for humankind from over 100,000 years ago. All religions culture and all other kinds of cultures had the arts as their most influential tool throughout human history.

Wow. That is stirring the pot! No, I do not believe religion will become extinct. I think that many will push back against the liberalism and ultra-sensitive, woke, or PC culture we find in society. But many do not know where to turn, so that decreases belief. To support your statement, many who are more educated are less humble, so less open to other ideas and/or not willing to have faith without physical evidence.

The harder religious people fight for their religion, the less attractive religion becomes, and the harder people are going to pull away from traditional religion in favor of, "spiritualism."

"He who establishes his argument by noise and command, shows that his reason is weak."-- Michel de Montaigne

As for religion going extinct, though, that isn't possible if we take what religious people would deem a liberal interpretation of religion. That definition being the less-colloquial use of the term religion, as we all know it can be interchanged with the colloquial usage of the term, "spiritualism."

So long as people seek answers to their reality, but are unable or unwilling to take a scientific approach to those ends, then we will always have religion. Religion is easy, it is easy for belief, scapegoating, utilizing, and disregarding. Heck, even if it were to become a perfect amalgam with philosophy we'd still be plagued by religion at its basest, most useless levels.

The only exception to the unarguable nature of religion's existence is when we finally develop the human/computer hybrid, and a hivemind-like communication system where we can form a consensus. Even then, though, that is unexplored territory and perhaps we all come to worship the singularity as ignorantly as we worshipped God(s).  A scary, but worthwhile concept.

Personally, I'd sooner bow to the singularity than the surreal mysticism of organized/wannabe-organized religions. At least the singularity will be tangible, even if the mind is shut off in favor of the consensus (a far-flung idea based in ignorance, as human/machine symbiosis would most likely never result in remote human control capabilities outside of warfare without dire legal consequences).

This is not only an eternal topic but one that arouses intense emotions. My way of thinking is that religion is even now more strongly entrenched than ever. In India, there is a renaissance and Hinduism is blossoming again.  In some of the Islamic countries, even the so-called secular people are going back to Islam in its pristine form like in Turkey. I have been to Russia and have seen the complete domination of life by the church so the same thing I think in various degrees is all over the world. Region represents a deep philosophy of the soul and it can never go away and even people who talk of science forget the greatest scientist of all time Albert Einstein was a very religious person and believed in god.

Just to poo on that parade here, Albert Einstein is widely regarded as an amazing businessman and opportunist over his scientific accomplishments. He was, in fact, an amazing analyst of trends and the people who were leading them, and it would be accurate to say he usurped science more than he performed it. His relationship with Nikola Tesla being the prime example of his lack of innovation in science, but it is an amazing representation of his relentless pursuit of business ventures.

Don't give Einstein more than he deserves, as he was little more than the scorpion riding on the turtle's back. Einstein's greatest strength was his grasp of the concept, "make others do the hard work."

Never. People are so far away from "enlightened" is isn't even funny anymore. It's just sad.

Yes, right now, the world is in a state of greater Madness. That I've ever seen or experienced in my lifetime and most others.

Hindu was the first religion thousands of years ago and all other religions evolved from this. Like the water buffalo to the cow today
Its mainly all appropriate to the current time, period, or circumstances; of contemporary interest.

        2. Very few of high IQs yet lack consciousness  and ethical practices, mostly greedy financial wealthy.

I didn't say they were "truly enlightened". And I think they are more enlightened than other people because they have a bit of a moral compass. Most people are savages with brains(including myself here)and they think they have morals, but they really don't.

As to your question about the Christian God, I am NOT a Christian. Far from it.

How do you define that "moral compass"?  When they agree with what you think of as "right" and "wrong" or when they agree with others of their culture, time and place?

Morals are never static; they forever change with time, circumstances and culture.

Morals of people change but that doesn't mean what is actually right & wrong changes.
For example, if people think that violence is the answer to problems, it doesn't mean that it is right.

I don't think religion will become extinct. One religion changes slowly in another or has different sects. Like Judaism, Christianity and Islam are more or less the same religions as they believe in one deity that created the world. (some details may be different.)
Today there are still many belief systems. Some believe in many gods, others in one, others in spirits of nature or spiritual leaders.
As society changes so will religion.
The biggest change in society since 11.000 years (agricultural revolution) is happening right now, namely, the internet revolution that organizes the way people communicate, work, and exchange currency and cultural influences.
So It makes sense that this radical change will also bring new ways of looking at life's questions.
It's difficult to predict the future, even if it's your profession. Nobody could have imagined 50 years ago, the society we are living in now. And this is an incredibly small time span. Societies used to be stable, without hardly any changes for 100's of years.
And I guess Climate Change will have a huge effect on human civilization for the next 20 plus years and has already started to have an effect on farming ground and cities. Immigration, wars for resources, extreme weather. water shortage and air pollution, extinction of animals. The change is huge.
The world is changing big time, and so will people's point of view and in the end the way they look at spiritual questions.

We will always have religion because it's infinite. The materialistic school of thought gave us the atom bomb and purported humans were animals that came from apes. Little did Darwin notice the life force which triggered the so-called evolution. I ask you, look at your hand, is that you? What is that life force that the French call elan vital?

    1. wilderness profile image96
wildernessposted 3 years agoin reply to this

What is "life force"?  Where is it found?  What is it made up of?  What does it weigh?  Which wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation does it reflect?  What is it's density?

Or is it a postulated but unproven concept?

(Neither Darwin nor anyone else, except those ignorant of evolution theory, has ever said that "humans were animals that came from apes".  While it is true we fall into the animal kingdom, and have a taxonomic designation as a hominidae along with gorillas, chimps, bonobos, and orangutan,  we split from the evolutionary branch before apes developed.)

No, I don’t think religion will become extinct, at least in the foreseeable future. Science has come a long way, but at the moment there are still puzzles related to existence that it hasn’t explained. In addition, the thought of ourself and our loved ones ceasing to exist is scary for some people. They may need the comfort that religion provides in order to deal with life.

Your statement that “only those who are less educated profess religious belief” is problematic. I have read about research saying that some aspects of religious belief tend to decrease with education (but don’t disappear in everyone who is educated) while other aspects don’t decrease.

The boundary between religious beliefs and no religious beliefs can be tricky to establish. For example, some people believe that the stories in a religious book are literally true. Others believe that the stories aren’t true but that they are important for their symbolism or for the advice that they share. Some people believe in God. Others don’t, yet they still believe that there is something important beyond our normal awareness.

    No.
There will always be people of faith. But the bible says in the end times the faithful/belivers will be taken up in the clouds to be spared the evil on earth. The antichrist times. In revelation.
But even then 12,000 Jews will convert amoung others. But it will be a terrible time to be on earth.

But basically there are many things unexplained.
    And always will be.
The need for God exists in the human heart and cannot be filled by sex booze drugs money fame

Religion will never be extinct, for many reasons.

Our understanding of the universe has not, and will not (in our lifetime, or the foreseeable future) disapproven God's existence.

There will always be faith, to varying degrees, and religion is an integral part of the development of faith.
