To the earning hubbers,
In terms of the number of articles alone, how many articles had you published when you started receiving payouts from HubPages?
Thank you for entertaining my question, I am just curious.
There's no easy answer. To make any money your articles have to be on the niche sites, and that requires meeting a high standard.
My understanding is that articles on Letterpile don't do very well.
"How to" articles do well, but most of the topics have already been covered here and elsewhere.
In my case, it took four months and probably 40 articles to make my first payout. But, I may not be typical. Others may earn faster than I do. It seems a rule of thumb is that you need about 1,000 views a day to get to payout every month.
Making money here is not easy and I expect most of us write here as a side gig, retirement activity (my reason), or because it's fun.
Yeah, that's true. Thank you for the insight, Rupert!
Even when success comes, it can be just a handful of articles that are generating all the views. Most will perform mediocrely or poorly, in my experience.
In theory, you can make a reasonable income from just a dozen or twenty articles, but in practice that's very difficult, if not impossible.
Realistically, you have to write a lot (30+ articles?) to even begin to find out what works and what doesn't. There are many different factors involved, so it's impossible to give precise figures.
The HP help section explains how to research things like good topics, titles, and keywords, and that improves your chances a lot. Most writers seem to ignore that advice though.
Paul's right. I choose to write on subjects that interest me and don't bother about whether or not search engines will be impressed. The dark arts of search engine optimization are a complete mystery to me. I've tried to educate myself on SEO but every time I start my eyes glaze over and I think of other things like is it wine time yet.
Right now, that's what I am doing too. More on writing about topics that interest me
'...I think of other things like is it wine time yet'. Rupert, the tone sounds as if it's not wine time. But when you're ready, don't forget to invite some of us. I know you like wine. I'll like to wash it down with a bite of your fried nice rutabaga. By the way, some here have left for other websites. Other have set up their blogs to market their products, to earn AdSense. Passive income from hubpages is presently at low.
Woah, these are amazing and refreshing insights. Thank you so much for sharing!
I don't recall exactly but I didn't get my first payout until 9 months after starting. I was putting out 2 to 3 articles a week in the first couple months back then. So, it may have been between 20-25 articles and poems, maybe 30.
Jan, when did you start writing? Way before I started here, it was a lot easier to make a payout. Justine, I think you need to know when people started too. Amazon has decreased the revenue program, and there used to be a referral program too that boosted revenue.
HubPages still has a referral program. Please visit the FAQ for information.
I was about the same as Jan, and I started in 2020. As time goes on, it is harder. Amazon used to give higher revenue, and before I was here, there was some kind of referral program. I think there may have been another affiliate program too, but I am not sure.
Abby, it was definitely easier back then. We had to work just as hard, but it was easier to make money, especially with Amazon. I came as things were getting harder with Google changing algorithms and rolling out Pandas and such. I think the hubbers before 2011 had it really good.
I don't remember the number of articles, but it took about 4 or 5 months for my first payout. Its more about exposure rather than the actual number of articles.
Justine, the number of articles required varies depending on the topic( whether it can generate traffic) and if it is selected for a niche site. It took me around 100 pieces and 14 months to reach the payout. But again, this is not a benchmark as others have achieved far before me. Also, I did not see any impact of the hub scores on the traffic and, subsequently, the payout.
You're right, it really does varies. I was really just curious when other hubbers got their first payout. Thank you so much!

I am writing articles for this website since past 3 months. At present, I have 38 featured and published hubs. I have joined for Amazon and google Adsense program. Past two months I earned like very less amount, less than 1/2 dollar. If I continue writing and publishing at the rate of one article...

Google adsense approval is a major issue that is faced by several people on hubpages. After waiting for 6 months, I got preliminary approval for google adsense (3 days passed). I was very happy to see this that finally I succed, but today I got mail stating that my application is rejected. I can't...

I only have $5 to go to reach payout for the first time. It took 2 years but I really don't count the first year because I only had 5 hubs that sat for a year so I figured it took about 1 year to reach payout. Is it true after your first payout your next payout comes quicker?

I have still not seen even .01 from HubPages. I have 18 hubs and have been on the site for over 6 weeks now. Do the articles take awhile to start earning money? I am just curious what other hubbers results have been (typically). Thanks!

How long did it take before you started earning $50 to $100 a month on Hubpages?I try not to think all too much about the earning part on Hubpages since I'm still new here (4 months), but when you're earning literally NO money at all... It's still a bit discouraging.

So I've been on Medium for a year and Hubpages for six years (my second time). I've come to the conclusion that they can benefit each other.I have twice now earned quite a bit more on hubpages as a result of an article on Medium. A few days ago, I posted a link to one one of my hubpage articles,...
