    More on the topic of the sinking ship that is Maven/Arena Group. Just for fun, I compared my last 7 days here vs. my last 7 days on Medium. On HP 4,633 views and earnings of $14.60. On Medium 1,700 views and $378.98 in earnings. On Medium comments and engagement are almost mandatory to succeed. There are no ads and payments are not restricted to a PayPal account.

      That's a huge difference. It's my understanding that you only get paid for articles on Medium for the first few weeks or did I get that wrong? Just wondering how you're making so much money. Your post has me considering trying them out.

        It is true that the newest articles rise to the top, but I have some that were written a year ago that still get traffic. And, you can revise an old article and resubmit and gain new views.

      That works out at $22 per view on Medium. Does that mean people are donating to you? I don't understand how you could could earn so much per view.

        Jerry, That works out to 22¢ per view, not $22.  That’s more realistic since the $5 monthly fee subscribers pay gets divided among all the authors' articles that they read each month.

      Linda, glad to see that you are doing so well on Medium. I haven't written anything in quite some time. One reason is that I've come to the conclusion that HP wants plastic articles that could easily be written by an AI. "Keep your personality at home because we don't want to know you" is the attitude that HP editors project. I've missed you and my friends who have left HP, but I hardly venture there because I rarely see anything that interests me anymore.
      You write the type of articles that have a theme that people will follow, so I can see why you are doing so well. I guess I need to get back into the swing of things and check Medium out. Maybe when things calm down at my house I'll do that. Thanks for letting us know how you are doing.

      The good news is that Medium has started revenue share with many more countries including India. So it's time to say goodbye to this place. I already have a reasonable audience on Medium. I think I'll take my chances there.

        How is Medium about writers publishing controversial articles on their writing platform?  I've encountered some censorship here on HubPages, but I was wondering if Medium was more permissive about what people publish there.  Artistic freedom is important to me.

      It means it's more rewarding at Medium than at hubpages.                                           I would have had registered with Medium too. But seems its still restricted to America and European countries.                                       I'm an African.

      I'm new-ish on HP but the idea of Medium interests me with some of the comments here- connecting to others and more personal type writing such as poetry. I had a question though about membership on Medium- can you have a free account to write on Medium or do you have to subscribe? Thank you.

    I totally agree, Linda. My earnings aren’t quite at your level, but the percentage in comparison are the same.
    Success at Medium depends if people are willing to write frequently and engage with others.

      Hi, John, I loved the engaging with others and I really miss it. I didn't realize that Medium did that, but then I kind of lost interest in writing. I haven't worried about it since I retired from "it" anyway.

        Yes, MizB, the community engagement is one of the things that convinced a number of us to start writing at Medium  when we could no longer comment here. Also having no ads was a big incentive.
        I write mostly poetry and short fiction there and although earnings have dropped a little this year I am averaging $150 per month there. If I have one poem boosted that could increase to $700 or $800, which I have made a couple of times.

    Medium didn't work for me, probably because of the type of articles I write - fact-based reportage. The platform seems to favour first-person experiences and opinion pieces, more blog-style writing. Not my thing.

          Presumably because the site isn't suitable for my "how to" guides and science tutorials. I did setup a home and garden publication, which didn't take off, but I haven't given up on it yet. I'm experimenting with Substack at the moment.

      Medium was great a few years back but, as with HP, earnings have gone down and down.

      To stand any chance nowadays, you have to constantly publish new material, and like and comment on the work of others so that they will return the favor.

      Old material tends to fade quickly and Medium doesn't pay you for external traffic, so the views you get from, say, Google, don't earn.

      I always preferred the HP model but I'll admit that it is also failing.

          For the time, yes. You get paid if other Medium writers read your work. It’s uncertain whether it will stay that way. There were talks of changing that to be more open.

          The best way to earn on Medium is getting published in publications, then you start getting into different reader circles. You can’t rely on SEO alone to help carry you as well as you could do that here.

          Medium’s boost program helps get you noticed. I think Medium is fantastic for creative writers. You get community and earnings for your stories or poems, and that can be hard to do in other places, like here HP is more for SEO. I can’t stress that enough…

          Traditional publishing is slow, very slow. You can publish quickly and see a return for your work with Medium. I’ve started publishing creative pieces there and then longer more detailed articles here.

              I think that will depend on how much you’re wanting to make. If you can plug in a couple of hours here and there to test it out, that might get you started. I currently make about an extra $50 from it a month with a handful of poems published throughout the month. I’ve wondered what would happen if a published daily or every other day.

              I don’t currently have the time to invest a lot on the engagement side. So I do what I can when I can. People who spend a lot of time on there are growing rather fast. I think for freelance writers it’s good to keep a few plates spinning.

              The key really is getting involved in the publications. Though don’t get involved in a read for reads kind of scheme… Medium frowns on this and it can get you banned if you’re not really contributing but just engaging for the sake of money.

                  Four or so years ago, I used to write a few articles/month and earn hundreds at Medium. Nowadays, it will get me around fifty dollars at the most. As with HubPages, the earnings trend is downward.

                  Most of the top writers when I joined Medium have left and a lot of the publications have shut down, mainly because of the declining revenue.

                  It's very much a closed system. People pay a subscription and the earnings come from those subscriptions.

                  While there are some people who pay just to read, in many cases, the earnings are effectively coming from other writers. Essentially, the less popular writers fund the more popular.

                  I can't say that I'm a fan of this system.

      Is anyone having problems importing Hubpages network site articles to Medium I'm finding it doesn't import photos. Maybe it was always like that. Is there a workaround without having to manually copy and paste images?

      Edit: I've just remembered how I did it. It works if article content is just highlighted and copied to the clipboard and then pasted into a new blank article on Medium.

        Yes. As long as the content is published at HP first. Each site has a different audience... HP is external; Medium is internal. You can add a canonical link to tell Google that HP is the main target.

        I've also added a note at the bottom saying 'Article originally published at HubPages'.

        Remember, it's your work, you can post it wherever you want and it isn't plagiarism because you aren't stealing it.

      I notice now I can't post a link to my Medium Home & Garden publication to Facebook. They're calling it spam. Has anyone ever been successful in sharing links to websites on Facebook? I think they have me on some sort of blacklist at this stage. So I'm just spamming their Linkedin account to piss them off.

          The issue seems to be posting links to a publication. I can however post links to articles in it. Maybe the anti-spam algorithm is intelligent enough to discover that I'm the author of all the articles in the publication.

      By Publication, do you mean a Blog? Yes, you can't post a link to your own blog. You can post a link to a particular article of yours.

      Sometimes, even links to articles are rejected as spam by the illiterate bots (they become illiterate occasionally!).

          You do not. You can only read 5 articles a month though. That makes it harder to engage with others. It’s worth testing things out in the free version.

                I believe their requirements changed. You now need to be a Medium member to join the Partner Program. This means you need to subscribe to Medium, which costs $5 per month or $50 per year.

          My wife said stay here on hubpages, if you don't want to pay for a membership on Medium. If you cannot afford the $5 to check it out stay where you are. - My wife said pay to read or stay where you are. Even Glen Stop does not have a star or a heart by his name of Medium. That is how you tell whether they are a free member or not. I hope cloverleaf is right, and they changed the requirement to join the Partners program. She started out for one month at a $50/year membership than upgraded to $15/month or $150/year. It has paid for itself the first month,

      Those are good questions. Here's a link that explains in detail all about Medium--how to write, how to read, membership, etc. I signed up years ago so don't remember the details. I think it's $5 per month or $50 per year. With that you can read unlimited articles and writing is free. Content without distracting ads and videos as such a relief from what we have here, and interaction with others forms a community of friends as we had here back in the good old days.

      My wife writes on Medium. She is a friend of medium membership. She just got done, blocking all the free memberships that followed her. She calls them "Freeloaders"/ When you go into Medium, as a free membership and you post on someone's article, and expect them to come back and post on your article and make you money, you are damaging the platform. You are sucking the life out of it, by draining the finances paid from someone else's membership fees.
      If you plan on doing this my wife said stay on hubpages. She pays $15 a month to write on Medium, and the people whose articles she posts on get 4x the payout. She just deleted and blocked over 100 "Deadbeats" or Freeloaders as she calls them today, that were following her. She has also wrote an article on "Freeloaders on Medium.

      After years of resisting I joined.  First impressions are that it feels a bit like HubPages used to be, if the engagement thing was important to you..

      When comments disappeared from HP that felt like a backward step.  No such issue with Medium - it is a big part of what they are about.

      The other element is writing.  Just real normal writing to engage with readers.  It doesn't feel forced or spammy somehow.

      OK it's only Day 2 for me but I give it a thumbs up so far.

      After pondering on the Medium issue for a few days and reading some helpful links I found here, I decided to take the plunge and dive in.
      Im still a free member now, but I think I’ll consider upgrading to Member. $5 a month isn’t too bad, I think.

      I have much material I can repurpose and post there, just to see how it goes.

                  Well, I guess I stopped paying attention when Medium began going downhill. It wasn't worth my time, although I tested the waters (so to say) once in a while. But now, I plan to delete and republish an article from 2019 that earned over $400 in the first few months and nothing since.

                  Anyway, thanks for the heads-up that your article was republished a couple of years ago. With the possibility that they changed their policy once again, I'll consier this an experiment. No harm if it fails since we no longer earn from old content there anyway.

                    You can earn from old content at Medium, you just need to pin a few older posts to your profile and change them up now and then, or write a new article and add a couple of links to older articles.
                    I have a poem that I published there more than a year ago and was boosted, have it pinned to my profile and it is still my highest earner each month, because when people check out my profile they often read it.

                      Thanks for the suggestion, John. I actually do pin some old articles to the top. But I discovered it only works when I limit it to one or two. When too many stories are pinned simultaneously, then people don’t see the new ones because they don’t scroll down.

                      The results can differ for a number of reasons, based on how many active followers you have and how the algorithm works in your favor. In your case, you’ve got a lot going well for you. But that isn’t always the case for everyone.

      There are tons of AI writers on Medium, it is hard to tell who is a bot or not. There are also so many tall tales of people making money, most writers make less than $5/ month even with a good effort. It is about being politically correct and being a respecter of persons, then maybe you will make $100/month with a near full time effort.

            I do, on PetHelpful. But it’s taken 13 years of writing here to figure out what works and what doesn’t. It’s been a steady 4 figure/month for about a year now. It really does take a lot of patience, persistency, and constant learning, especially when it comes to SEO, as much of my traffic is driven from Google.

                Jerry, that's a great question!

                Moving domains always comes with it's challenges. I'll have to move my PetHelpful articles to Discover, just like all the other contributors here. In theory, Discover has a higher Domain Authority (DA) than PetHelpful, and my articles' SEO value should be preserved (the HubPages staff will use 301 redirects to point the niche site urls to Discover urls). Also, the revenue share program will remain the same.

                BUT, I anticipate a temporary drop in traffic while Google adjusts to the changes (this may take days or weeks).  I also anticipate less clicks on the search engine results pages (SERPS) because I think pet owners prefer to get answers from pet sites. (The name "PetHelpful" carries much more credibility than "Discover HubPages" to pet owners!)

                Currently, I am importing content to Medium, with canonical links back to PetHelpful. This strategy helps me to reach a wider audience; I can publish the new Medium stories to pet publications. I can also build new backlinks as I go, which will improve "link juice" for Google when the move happens.

                If I simply "shifted" my articles to Medium (deleted off HP and republished on Medium), they would lose the SEO value they have built over time. So I will only delete/republish work that gets little or no traffic.

                  I had the editors shift my articles over to Discover a week or so ago and their daily views along with their ratings and my personal rating have dropped like a stone, so I'd leave shifting them until the last few weeks as you earn so well with them on PetHelpful.

                  Did you consider Substack instead of Medium? Sifting through the comments here, many seem to think Medium is on a downwards trajectory like HP.

                  I have recently read only good things about Substack and what has especially stood out was that some of their publications have been sold on for multi millions. Your pet niche it would seem could create the same interest over time. Just a thought.

      Now I know that I may consider Medium. I just got notice that HP was discontinuing some of its niche sites, and I need to go back and reread the notice. I do remember that DenGarden was one of them. My top article is on DenGarden, and I've been considering writing another article aimed at that site.

        It's not being discontinued. It, along with Pethelpful, is going to be kidnapped and moved to TAG. Any articles left there won't be eligible for earnings. So you need to send an email to team@hubpages.com and request that all of your articles on those two sites be moved to Discover.

            ToughNickel and TurboFuture no longer exist. They have been assimilated into Discover.

            These are the only 6 they are keeping around, at least for now. Letterpile, Owlcation, Wehavekids, Delishably, WanderWisdom, and HobbyLark.

            It is unclear what the future will hold for them, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of these sites eventually have the same fate as Pethelpful and Dengarden.

              I do have an article published on Letterpile.  I guess once HubPages begins moving everything over from that verticle site to DiscoverHubPages, it will be time for me to ask them to move my article over to it also so that I continue to get paid money on it.

      Yes, I admit it doesn’t work for everyone and you have to be able to devote a lot of time there writing and interacting. I have 4.7k followers, but how many are active who knows. I think I have three articles pinned.
      The best part is you can republish articles from here that have been sitting dormant with no views and at least make some quick money from them.

        I have 4 articles pinned at a time and then shuffle them every couple of days. I ensure new articles are at the top for a few days then I pin another.
        Just kind of experimenting while trying to find my feet for now.

        Thank you for the tip about re-publishing dead hubs there.

          Yes, that is the best idea, viryabo. I usually check out my oldest hubs, many still lingering on HubPages and dormant. I update them, remove any reference to hubs etc and put them on Medium. Surprisingly, many perform really well…and you don’t even have to delete them from here.

            In your list of stories, you’ll see three dots next to each. Just click on it and choose “pin to profile”. I can’t post the link here, but I wrote a Medium story about the benefits of doing so. If you Google “How to Lock a Story on Medium” you should find it. I discuss 3 different ways to “lock” your stories.

        Compared to you, I only have 1.3K followers. But I think most of them follow hoping I would follow back. I see many of them never read anything before following, so I ignore those. Medium used to crack down on that practice, but they seem to have given up enforcing it. Or, maybe it's built into the algorithm. Who knows!

        To your point about republishing articles from here: I do that, but not on Medium. I put them on my website.
