I read his nieces' book Too Much and Never Enough. She says he was never loved by his parents; His mother was a sickly person who was involved in her social events and his father was too busy with his real estate development projects to pay attention to his needs, thus the narcissism.
His extreme narcissism drives him to build monuments to himself and remove any evidence of those he feels are threating to him. His master con-artist side gives him the ability to lie about everything to create illusions of positivity like winning when he is actually losing.
I read excerpts from his book, The art of the deal. There is a passage in there, while as a real estate developer, he is trying to get a loan from a bank for a property he is developing which is now just a piece of land. The bankers were coming to evaluate the progress he was making, but there was no progress.
It was just a piece of land. So, he hires heavy equipment and operators to look like they are making progress. one of the bankers asked him why one guy was digging a hole with his equipment and the other guy is covering the same hole.
He never answered and he got the loan. It was all an illusion and that is what he does every chance he gets is to create illusions. Now, I think he is at the point he actually believes his illusions and they become reality in his mind. His niece who is a clinical psychologist, says he is in survival mode and that's why the radical behavior.
