Ok, Ok, Ok..... so that is just an incy wincy bit over exagerated.

I'm not releasing a novel through Harper Collins.... but a small and edgy magazine from Fort Myers, Florida, is publishing two of my hubs in print!

Some of you may have seen my thread about being approached by a famous person who would send me free signed photos...... if so, I apologise for not letting you know..... this person was Sir Geoff Hurst.

Any non-British people will need to google this name, but will be able to appreciate his level of fame in the UK after a quick read wink

Anyway, I am really pleased about the print stuff, is certainly something for my portfolio.... well to be honest it is the start of my portfolio.....

    <URL snipped - no self-promotion in the Forums>

^^^ That is the magazine ^^^ only prints 5000 but it looks awesome and is the type of market I occassionaly target.Sorry for the rant, has anybody had similar experiences to this?

My only conditions were to be posted a free copy of the magazine, for the article to be credited to me by my real full name, and for all publishing rights to be retained by me. That sound ok?

You should have asked for more than one copy.

      Other than that, good work!

Yeah was thinking that, but why? One to keep in top condition and one to show off to mates? You normally have a good reason, why two? Just because two is twice as many as one?

        1. darkside profile image62
darksideposted 14 years agoin reply to this

When you don't get payment you can actually ask for a few copies. 4, 5, 6...

It's good to have some back up copies.

Give one to the parents, keep one for the grandkids, put one in your portfolio, hand one around to your mates.

No, Ryan, think half dozen. REALLY. One for you, one for show and others because you WILL have professional contacts whom you wish that you could just provide one for verification/professional purposes. Really, you need to think that way. Other than that, you've thought it all through quite well, I think.

I've been published in a few smaller newspapers and journals on occasion years ago, but most of my work is in printed music. I do have much more experience in that area, and it's roughly comparable to print publishing.

Anyway, huge congrats on this! I'm sure you'll be getting other offers as time goes on!

Congrats RK smile I think your request is quite reasonable. Got to have your name carried aloft to gain loft wink

Great, glad you said that. I could see straight away that it was a small operation.... so I didn't want to ask for payment... at the same time, publication could open some other doors. It only has a circulation of around 5000..... if something comes along with a circulation of 50000 then I will ask for a token rate per 500 words or something.

In addition, I have offered to write something for their next issue..... maybe I can carry that on for a year or something.... would certainly be a great start to a CV? You reckon?

Yep Florida sure does rock! But it's also completely massive! This mag only goes out in Fort Myers...... do you know anybody from there? Cos if you don't, then you are just gonna have to read the online version wink

      Cheers Cole big_smile

Yes I do. My aunt's family has a vacation house there (they live in North Dakota) and should be coming down soon.
Florida is biiiigg. But its amazing, so many different things in one state. Congrats again smile

A lovely lady named Lisa, who is the owner, just emailed me and asked to publish one of my hubs (will state which one when it actually happens!). I said yes, and she then had a read through and asked to publish two more..... one I said yes to one, the other I said no to. She also requested that I write on another subject, which I have agreed to on principle, so I should be in the next issue too if I find the time big_smile

Goes to show that having a 'contact' link can really pay dividends..... even if it means regular spam and the odd complete freak, there can be diamonds in the rough wink

Outstanding Ryan.  Exposure to a whole new audience.  Who knows where else that can lead.  I started teaching some community education classes in a couple of my niche areas.  If the class does not have enough people to sign up, and the class does not “make”, I teach anyway for free, for the exposure.  Even with a small “audience”, you never know what opportunities may arise from those small venues.

great job, ryan.  again. you're an amazing creature.

i agree with darkside and danielcarter, you can never have enough printed samples of your work, even in this age of electronics.  you'll be surprised how quickly they disappear. leave one here with a friend, one there with a client, etc, etc. they're much more impressive than a business card and keep your name in the client's mind long after the three second window of opportunity is past. if they're not paying, giving you a stack of printed pieces is no sweat for them.

eventually these pieces start taking up space, but it's a small price to pay for having a portfolio.

keep us posted, as well, in how they treat you after the hubs have gone to print.

    Well done.

For credits, it might be better to use your hubs url (or your website if you have one), rather than just your name. Make it easier for people to come and read your other stuff, rather than having to google you (which could land them up anywhere).

From experience, the "worst" thing about being published is the rush of people who come directly to ask your advice on specific things.... it can be overwhelming.  That bit scares me so I've usually requested that I am published anonymously smile
