As I recall we didn't see Bush "on the ground" in New Orleans until a year or so after Katrina.

My recollection is that it's not customary for American presidents to personally go to the sites of disasters in other countries. If I were his adviser, I would advise him to stay here and make sure we are taking every reasonable step to help the victims of the disaster.

I think it is all but common knowledge there is a huge double standard in politics on both sides.  We endured 8 years of it with the Bush administration.  Now before I'm labled a "Bush hater".  I don't feel he was Satan's brother.  There is some good that came out of his administration.  I can't help but feel sometimes the entire political machine is at a point of nowhere.  We want Obama to come up with quick and easy fixes for everything. A year into his presidency some are ready to throw him to the wolves, beacuse the country is not perfect by now.  Is he an easier target because his ethnicity?  Does this make his critics more harsh towards him?
Why expose Reid's comments now?  At a time when the president needs unity within his own party, this will surely create tension and more distrust. Is it so much concern the public has the right to know, or is this a perfect time to create more turbulence within the democratic party.  Every action in Washington is calculated.  Is it possible actions such as these are more self serving than geared towards public interest. These were idiotic comments made by a supposedly intelligent, well informed individual. Its happened numerous times before; Trent Lott, Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, the list is long and distinguished and yet again someone's "true colors" comes to surface.

Arthur you tricked me into a possibly losing bet! :-) I see from something I read today that Reid is facing stiff opposition which has nothing to do with his tactless remark about Obama bur rather from a couple of Republicans and a bunch of tea partiers. I don't recall the source, but it said that he may well lose the election.

Here's what Leonard Pitts a respected, syndicated black columnist had to say in his column today--

SEN. REID IS RIGHT ABOUT RACE BY LEONARD PITTS, JR

"Somebody please tell Harry Reid there are no Negroes in America.

"There haven't been since the late 1960s =, which is when black people arrived and drove that term out of favor. THE PERSON WHO USES IT WITHOUT IRONY, AS REID DID, PAINTS HIMSELF AS A GEEZER OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE LAST 40 YEARS, THE KIND OF PERSON WHO STILL CALLS ROCK MUSIC A FAD.

"That said there is little to complain about in the quote from the Senate majority leader...It (the book) has Reid, as supporter of then-candidate Barack Obama, privately suggesting the country was finally ready to elect a black man, especially one who, like Obama is "light-siknned" and has "no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

"A firestorm has raged ever since with Michael Steele likening Reid's remarks to the gaffe that got Trent Lott in trouble...Richard Prince writes that panelists on the Sunday talk shows "were shocked, shocked that there is 'colorism' in America and a perceived Negro dialect....

"Too bad. they might have helped frame the one question that has gone conspicuously unaddressed in the loud debate over what Reid said: WAS HE RIGHT?

"Sure he was. Moreover there is somethingly unbearably precious in the idea of pundits bypassing that question to debate the existence of colorism and black dialect.

"Anyone who doubts the existence of the former should qacquaint herself with the 'doll tests' conducted by Dr. Kenneth Clark in the 30s and 40s. Those tests found black children describing otherwise identical white dolls as 'nice' and 'good' and black ones as 'bad.'

"Anyone who doubts the existence of a black dialect...denies self-evident truth. Of course there is , just as there is a boston Irish dialect, A Southern white dialect, a Midwestern dialect. So what?

"Anyone who doubts Obama's ability to turn said dialect off and on has never heard him work a black audience or reporter. I interviewed Obama once. He quoted something I had written about him, whereupon I expressed surprise that he knew my work, Obama's reply: 'Oh yeah, brother, I read you.'

"I have trouble imagining him addressing George F. Will in a similar manner. I also have trouble understanding why this calibration of language would be problematic. Don't members of most groups--ethnic, racial, religious, geographic, occupational--speak differently among their own?

"The Gist of Reid's comment then is that a dark-skinned man who announced his candidacy thusly--'I'm gon run for president. I ax for your support'--would have trouble being taken sericously...George W. Bush couldn[t pronounce  'nuclear' if you put a gun to his head, and you need a GPS and a Sherpa to get through Sarah Palin's winding utterances, but their race buys them at least a measure of forbearance that--call me crazy--I don't think a dark-skinned candidate could expect.

To believe Reid did something wrong in talking about that is to buy the silly contention that talking about race is, of itself, racist. The morally malleable Michael Steele knows better. He also knows full well that Trent Lott's sin was to suggest America would have been better off had an arch-segregationist been elected president in 1948.That's not close to what Reid did.

"No Reid's sin was to be blunt, indecorous impolitic.

                  "And right."

                  Detroit Free Press Op-ed Jan 15, 2010.

Here's what Michael Kinsley had to say in the current "Atlantic"

"As many have pointed out, Reid’s comment was a “gaffe”—a statement that gets you in trouble because it’s true. The sense that Obama was a different kind of black politician—not part of the southern civil rights movement or the great migration north—may have made some African Americans suspicious (though I would like to meet a single black American who voted against him for this reason), but undoubtedly helped him among whites."

          more Kinsley

"Indeed I read or heard of no one who was actually offended by Reid’s remarks. The disagreement about whether to take them seriously and force Reid to resign  broke down entirely on party grounds, as opposed to racial ones. Every Republican pol from their chairman on down said he should resign, and every Democratic pol from Obama on down said he should stay. Even Al Sharpton, who will fly to the site of a racial misstatement like the FAA rushing to the scene of an air crash, decided to take a pass on this one. The Republican argument boiled down to sauce for the goose. Rules are rules, and the rule is, you commit a racial gaffe, you resign.  The accusation was of a double standard. Democrats replied: this is different, because of intent and context. Trent Lott was saying America would be better off if it was still segregated by race. Reid’s remark, by contrast, was intended to praise Obama and clearly came in the context of wishing him well and hoping for his success."

Trent Lott was saying America would be better off if it was still segregated by race.

Lott was speaking to a 100 year old at his birthday party.  It would be normal to try and say nice things about the man at his birthday.  No one can say exactly what Lott meant any more than they can Reid.

            Double Standard

Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

Lott's and Reid's remarks are in no way equivalent. Moreover, it was the GOP, not the Dems who ousted Trent Lott in an unsuccessful appeal for black votes.

Paul Gottfried:  "It is also the case that pace Sarah Palin, it was the Reps, not the Dems, who "immolated" Lott, in the words of Dan McCarthy, as a propitiatory offering to blacks. Dan has further observed in an email note to me that "Lott’s head on a pike did nothing to help George Allen [the liberal Republican politician who lost the black vote badly in the Virginia senatorial race in 2006]."

"But such a useless strategy can be continued because until now it has done nothing to drive away most of the white Republican core. In the South more than elsewhere, the GOP has become the white party, as opposed to the Democrats, who attract almost every black vote. Presumably being a Republican, no matter what the party leaders say, identifies the party loyalist as a white Southerner. One might also observe, as Lew Rockwell has many times, that the South is full of military installations and disproportionately represented among military forces. Given such a connection, white Southerners with fading historical memories don’t seem to care about supporting a party that condemns the display of Confederate flags and praises the glories of Reconstruction. After all, the GOP is good at providing military build-ups and military engagements. "

The best part to me is....we don't have to worry about Harry Reid.  He's gone in November anyway and, I've never paid much attention to the ramblings of fools.  Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Rangel, Dodd, Clinton (either one), and throw in Obama.  Does any thinking, objective observer really believe these people know what they're doing???? or, are they simply following a predetermined agenda?  When responding, please don't quote me any talking points will ya.
